To think girls shouldn’t wear sandals in the park?

It’s been a beautiful day here so I was at the park. DS was on the climbing which is huge, designed for older kids, not toddlers.

There were so many girls crying and panicking getting across it because their sandals were getting trapped. Their feet were sliding out of them because of their angles, and their dresses were hindering them.

AIBU to think girls who are going to park should be put in sensible trainers and trousers? The boys were managing with ease because they were suitably dressed. A substantial amount of the girls were struggling because of what they were wearing.

There are literally sandals called closed-toe sandals

Yes and you can also get heeled flip flops and trainers with wheels in them…..

Clearly we are talking about a typical sandal which is typically open toed. Are you always so obtuse?

How sad you didn't have these sandals as a child. My mother did, I did, my children did. They are traditional children's sandals. I can still see ds in his brown ones and dd in her navy or white ones. They are 30 and 27 now.

Pretty sure we all wore those as children. Doesn’t make them not shoes…

Lullabycrickets23 · 19/08/2025 13:45

Are they?
Don’t you reckon they are not really appropriate to climb, run, playing football or go on bikes?
why is it different if a boy wears them? Why you think a boy is more capable of making choices for himself, but girls should be told by their parents what shoes are appropriate?
This starts to sound really really misogynistic.

If the problem is Shoes, that it should apply to both sexes. Flip flops are as inappropriate as flimsy sandals. For both girls and boys.

If the problem is what is appropriate for girls to wear then the problem is the way you see girls.

What? It’s the activity that’s different.

Op your lovely and sensible boys will one day turn 13 and shuffle around in nike sliders. 😂

At 13 they won’t be on climbing frames.

I am certainly not “raging” I find it almost laughable that some people don’t understand the difference between a typical shoe and a typical sandal.

I wasn’t even commenting to you, I was replying to a different poster who linked a photo of quite clearly a shoe and you inserted yourself.

I think you’re the one who needs to calm down swearing at me.

Cheeky19863 · 19/08/2025 17:49

At what age do you stop "telling" your daughter what to wear and let them make decisions for themselves OP?

When they’re old enough to have the sense to put appropriate shoes on their feet.

We called them sandals. They were sold as sandals.

I loathe the word "should". It implies there is an absolute right and anyone who doesn't conform is wrong.

I particularly loathe it when applied to girls and women.

Perhaps the only accept "should" is that people should mind their own business.

Why on earth do you think you are the arbiter of appropriate girls wear?

We are all the arbiters of what is right and wrong. To me is seems a no brainer that girls should wear safe and protective footwear so they can explore and play without having an accident or being limited by their footwear. You might loathe that, that's not my problem.

Also, this "people should mind their own business" is nonsense too. And work both ways. One day you might need help, and everyone is looking the other way.

It’s a sandal here as PP said they were always called sandals growing up too.

You’re the one who said tell the girls which shoes are appropriate to wear “like the boys manage to do”

Swissmeringue · 19/08/2025 20:51

Trousers and trainers sounds like they'd be absolutely boiling in the summer. Both my kids (boy and girl) are in sandals because they are appropriate for the weather. It's never stopped them climbing anything.

Also you mention it being for older kids, my oldest is 7, so peak massive climbing frame age. I don't really get involved in the dressing process. I tell her what we're doing/where we're going and she puts on some clothes. If it was truly batshit, like a bridesmaids dress for the park or a fluffy jumper in August I'd send her to get changed. But fundamentally I'm not "putting" her in anything. I don't believe in that level of micromanagement!

Canyoucreateoneplease · 18/08/2025 21:14

The girls are young children. They probably aren’t dressing themselves.

You haven’t met my DD - she has VERY strong opinions on what to wear. I usually pick my battles, let her choose her outfit, and then tell her “I think trainers might be more comfortable, shall I bring them as spare” and if she feels she needs them she’ll swap over but tbh 9 times out of 10 she manages really well in whatever she’s picked (accompanied by a “see mummy I told you I could wear sandals to the park” 🤦🏼‍♀️)

wishIwasonholiday10 · 19/08/2025 21:06

Depends on the child and the sandals. Mine has some mobility and coordination issues so I pretty much have to dress her in proper shoes and socks even when it’s really hot. She also prefers leggings as she falls down a lot and doesn’t scrape her knees as much in leggings.

Some children can play fine in sensible sandals like walking sandal type ones. I myself wear them for hiking in hot weather (nothing too technical).

Op is suggesting that girls wear shoes fit for task. We all know supportive well-fitted shoes are better for developing feet, I’m not sure why this is such a divisive thread?

A bridesmaids dress is about as sensible as the shoes I’m talking about.

Because it’s triggered a nerve with parents who put their daughters in dresses and inappropriate sandals for the park so that they look nice.

Or say to their kids "we're going to buy sandals for the summer" and let their kids pick like most people?

Whatshesaid96 · 19/08/2025 22:15

I'm massively of the opinion your child your rules so I don't try and judge. My kids would stub their toes, find the smallest piece of wood for a splinter or slip wearing sandals as they are relatively clumsy. DD6 will often come down wearing a skirt to go to the park. I generally ask if she'll put shorts on or put them on underneath her skirt. She is extremely athletic and I know that she'll have so much more grip in trainers and scuff them to her hearts content without scraping a load of skin off.
