Their stuff looks lovely (online on skinny models anyway) - have heard a few good things recently as i had written them off a few years ago. Anyone use them and happy with the product, quality, returns etc

i hate online clothes shop but the high street/town centers are dead in many places now so options are really limited often to just M&S, Next, H&M or Primark

This was never going to end well.

I don’t think it’s fair to label people as ‘selfish’ or ‘nasty’ for their shopping choices. 'Selfish' is a very loaded word. Everyone is selfish in their own ways. People try to make the best choices they can, but they also have to think about budget and practicality. That's often their priority and it's quite innocent really. The reality is, so many products we all use — clothes, phones, even food — come from supply chains with ethical issues. It’s not that people don’t care, it’s that they don’t always see those conditions first-hand, and unfortunately it’s a problem that’s much bigger than individual shoppers.

Edited

It is nasty and selfish though.

I chat with a dog walker who regularly buys from Temu. The first time I pointed out the ethical issues she was shocked, but continues to show me how much she buys from there.

I understand budgets, I’m on minimum wage. Just buy sensibly and not often. People buy hundreds of pounds worth of clothes but complain shops are too expensive, that doesn’t make sense.

Would these people be comfortable with their children and family working in these factories? Of course not.

I’ve loved everything I’ve had from there, and all very unique

They rip off smaller brands and steal designs.

Disturbia81 · 19/08/2025 17:08

Wexone · 19/08/2025 16:31

still not unique 🙈🤣
unique is something that is rare and very little people have it - thousands of that item has been produced making it the same as high street "sameness"

I never see people wearing my stuff, maybe it will get more common as time goes on.

and I never do either?? doesn't make me unique whatsoever though 🤷‍♀️
shein is common
you said that's buying from shein they are all unique doesn't make sense at all 🙈

God yeah, buying tat from the world's shittiest fast fashion retailer. So unique, so subversive.

Probably because you're lucky to get more than 2 wears out of it before it dissolves in the wash.

This is such an odd perspective. I hardly ever see people wearing the same clothes as me either. But why do you even give a shit? You know you didn't hand craft your polyester crap, so you're well aware that it isn't "unique". Shein stuff sells in the tens of thousands all over the world so if unique is what you're after you're doing it seriously wrong. It's not really stylish either, it's reactive trendy shite.

No I wear alternative clothing and they do different stuff to what I see in shops. Anyway you are gearing for an argument, bottom line is we love the stuff and it’s affordable.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 19/08/2025 19:09

I don’t buy from them because they steal designs from other designers and put them out of business.
If people carry on buying from them, then don’t be surprised when all the other clothes shops close down. Then all you be left with is buying clothes which are shipped half way around the world.
Think of the environmental impact that will have, never mind the slave labour etc etc.
It is fast fashion, it is unnecessary.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 19/08/2025 19:11

Then the same people who buy it will be moaning that there is nothing left in their town centre. Nowhere for their DCs to go, etc. etc.

My town centre has lots of takeaways, pubs, tattoo shops and vape shops, what more could my DC's need!

It's not unique though. It's all mass produced designs stolen from actual "alternative" brands and made with questionable materials and even more questionable supply chains. That's the real bottom line.

bananafake · 19/08/2025 19:37

Sick to death of all these blatant PR posts.

No we're not going to ignore all the ethical issues because you do a powder puff review on Mumsnet.

🤣🤣 altenative clothing - what ever that is
different types of style has been around for decades punk romantic goth etc every type of alternative clothing
it's not affordable clothing either. it's aimed at people who have disposable income and keep spending it every month- that's how it works the mindset that its cheap you need it and buy buy buy. people who can't afford to buy clothing every month don't spend that..they source good quality clothing that they need make stuff to last.

HopingForTheBest25 · 19/08/2025 20:20

Dd has had some decent stuff. I was in H&M today and a lot of their stuff looks like rags to me, but at triple the price!
I think that wherever you buy these days it's a lot polyester/recycled plastic shite that will make you sweat and look like a dishcloth as soon as you wash it. Unless you can afford to spend much more than standard high street.

Deadringer · 19/08/2025 20:31

I am not a fan of Shein or fast fashion in general, but after my dd with SEN wore nothing but her school uniform or pjs for 3 years I was thrilled when she found some clothes on Shein that she liked. And best of all she actually leaves the house now because she has something to wear. Judge away, I dont care. And none of the clothes she likes are especially cheap, jeans are around 25 pounds, t-shirts 10, jumpers 15/20, certainly more expensive than primark.

This is really interesting. In my youth, I was very alternative, part of the lifestyle, clothes and everything else. Part of that was cultural. We didn’t just want to look alternative, we wanted to be alternative. And part of that was speaking up for the majority world, caring about the environment, speaking truth to power, protesting the mainstream zeitgeist.

Is it now just important to look alternative?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 19/08/2025 20:41

Don't worry I tell my toddler not to smoke or light fireworks when she's wearing a £1.50 Shein dress.

///

I think the point you are deliberately ignoring is that these rags end up being sent to some other 3rd world company to be incinerated and all those fucking awful chemicals end up in the eco system

Momononoyoooo · 19/08/2025 20:43

Upped their game??? Slave labour of the Uighur Muslim Minority? Wow. People are openly supporting and shopping this slave trade? Seriously. Please educate yourself. You have access to the internet it is not acceptable to be so ignorant in 2025.

Not a recent video but still a useful watch. J Leconte is a trained seamstress who has lots of experience of the fashion industry.

Don’t worry I tell my toddler not to smoke or light fireworks when she’s wearing a £1.50 Shein dress.

I expect Claudia Winkleman also knew her daughter wouldn’t be smoking or lighting fireworks when she wore a cheap Halloween costume from a UK supermarket which unfortunately caught fire, leaving the child with serious burns. (Halloween costumes are often classified as toys rather than clothes and are therefore not subject to the same UK safety standards).

Please note I’m not blaming Claudia or the child’s father for this incident- it happened because the clothes were flammable and children’s clothes really shouldn’t be.

It’s just not really something to laugh about.

Forgotthebins · 19/08/2025 21:20

When people say Shein is no worse than the high street, that’s really not true. Companies like Next and H&M have auditors and legal requirements, they get inspected, so they can’t just use slaves or toxic chemicals. They’re not perfect but they’re better than that. It’s one thing to buy the odd thing off Shein because we all get tempted but you really can’t pretend it’s no worse than anywhere else.

that poster making light of flammable clothes on kids is something else 😳.
