Foodbank - 3 cars

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 00:11

Am I being unreasonable to think a family with 2 cars and a big fancy house shouldn't be using foodbanks regularly? No disability issues.

I've been on holiday before when skint, it was with parents though who paid for it. You just can't judge people's circumstances.

Yep. I remember one time my mum was absolutely on the bones of her arse but had one of them big fancy flat screen TVs everyone thinks poor people shouldn't have. In fact she had previously had a chunky metered TV and my siblings and I had chipped in to get her her own TV at Christmas. She wasn't any less skint because of it.

I’m with you OP. If I was donating to a food bank, I would expect to be donating to the needy and would not expect people with nicer houses and cars than myself to be classed as “needy”.

Food bank… yes. Community fridge …no.

zingally · 17/08/2025 12:39

In all honesty, when it comes to foodbanks, I figure, "There, but for the grace of god, go I."
No one truly knows anyone elses full story.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 17/08/2025 12:46

YABU to think people with big houses and several cars should not use foodbanks - sometimes circumstances change. Regular use? This is where you may not be unreasonable - no one should be using food banks regularly and there are an element of people (seen when I volunteered at one) who would spend money getting their nails or hair done or going to the pub, then rock up for free food. However, most food banks are having to relax the rules about how often people can go. So, its hard to say.

Quite a lot of people do their own hair and nails. I don't get this current thing of banging about these things.

You aren't giving us the full facts.
No one can agree or disagree if you aren't going to tell the truth (ie the name of the TV show at least).

I stopped donating to our local foodbank. They advertise themselves as requiring referrals but my friend volunteers with them and said in reality, they won't actually ever turn anyone away. They have a lot of regular users and know it - some are people who fall through cracks in benefit system etc but she said they know a lot are substance users and they are aware of some piss takers who have other money.

I find that very sad that you’ve stopped donating, substance abuse is an addiction.

Yes you’ll get piss takers as we every benefit, but no reason to stop the benefit for the few and let the majority suffer,

Sky news from the 10/11th, a piece about cost of living. Family with 3 cars aren't using the food bank. OP doesn't have any facts.

No because if they can't prove they're actually broke it won't be a food bank it'll be a community fridge that anyone can use and it's really none of your business whether you think someone is poor enough.

Plus they've got kids and you seem to think a house is a luxury item you never replied with whether you think the kids should live in a bin for someone to be able to use a food bank. And people telling you a 200k house isn't that big unless you live in the middle of Butt fuck

Cranberryavocado · 17/08/2025 13:21

Something may have gone terribly south for them recently and they are working on what to do next. Working out how to get out of the car finance and selling their house.
Its perfectly possible to be on a high income then suddenly find yourself out of work, saving depleted and completely fucked.

And as for the communities fridge I know wealthy people living in an almost million pound house that use it as well as my father a lazy alcoholic similar to the one a previous poster described and you know what if people like that want to use the fridge good for them because anyone can use it. Maybe time to learn the difference between the food bank and the community fridge.

Unless you refuse to use the fridge to prove a point, in that case enjoy your high grocery bill hopefully the smug sense of self satisfaction was worth it

IsItSnowing · 17/08/2025 09:22

I would prefer not to judge them.
It must be hard enough having to go to a food bank in order to feed your family without knowing that people might be judging your worthyness.

Trust me after a few years volunteering, you wake up a bit.

It's hadly a bedsit though. I do a lot of community work. This is how I know how many take the mick. I know a few shop keepers who go there to stock up their shops also.

No you don’t. People put this sort of dribble on forums, Facebook etc and then idiots repeat them as truth. Mumsnet tell me to challenge in thread, so here it is, receipts or fiction.

(your can’t produce the receipts)

For God's sake OP. Your whole post is based on a news piece you misunderstood. Don't make it worse with lies and racism. Pathetic.

Ok, let's take you up on this @TalkToTheHand123 ...

  1. where's your source that says shopkeepers use food banks to supplement their stock?
  2. source that evidences certain minorities "abuse" food banks

... or are you just repeating some racist shit you've read?

When buying expensive items such as a house, you should give yourself a little wiggle room for price rises, make cut backs. There seems to be far too many people using the foodbanks so they can spend on luxuries, ie an expensive handbag for £300.

@OP you've not made it clear whether you understand the difference between Food Banks, and Local Pantries/Kitchens/Storecupboards.

The former you usually can't use without a voucher or referral from Social Services, Child's school, Social Prescribers etc, and that latter is open to anyone regardless of income or status as a way to reduce food wastage. These usually have a "10 items for £3" rule, after playing an £5 annual membership or something similar. These are obviously often used by people living with hardships, either temporary or permanent, but certainly not exclusively by them, nor intended to be only used by them. If "normal" people choose to shop there and spend the rest of their food budget on trips to the cinema or handbags that's absolutely fine and not an issue. They've bought food which would have otherwise gone into landfill.

I don't think you understand there's a difference.

Or maybe you do, and the warm weather has had you triptrapping out from under your bridge.
