Pizza Express "new recipe" chicken goujons. WTF?

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/08/2025 21:08

I was expecting chicken strips in breadcrumbs, I got 6 chicken mcNuggets with a pesto dip at the grand price of £8.75.🤯

They were not strips of chicken. They were the cheapest, reconstituted and reformed meat in a nasty batter. The kind you get in budget shops for £1.50 a kilo.

If this is the new recipe how nasty was the old one?

Has no one noticed? Are you getting McNuggets or proper chicken?

I’ve not been in a Pixza Express for 15 years, but I’m giving you a wee boost here for responses, because I love your anger at their chicken change. Four hours later and still angry, I love it!

Let’s see a photo . …You know how it works on here! 😉

I don't live in the UK but if I was visiting I wouldn't go to a place called Pizza Express in search of a quality meal. Are they known for serving healthy options?

TrickorTreacle · 16/08/2025 02:24

YABU. Last time I've seen a Pizza Express was 18 years ago, in 2007.

VaseofViolets · 16/08/2025 02:47

First and only time I went to Pizza Express was in 2008. Pizza was soggy and tasteless - like eating fresh air 🤢

Was that in Woking?

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/08/2025 07:20

The last time I went into Pizza Express was about 10 years ago, and the bill was £100 for 3 of us.
With only one beer!
So, I said never again. Especially since i’m ambivalent about pizza anyway.
I think it’s overrated.

I’m in australia and miss pizza express - bloody love an American hot 🤣

Yes they are, and they are one of the few restaurants around that have a full list of allergens including alliums, so although they are expensive they are well worth supporting.

Food that doesn’t put you in hospital is always healthy food.

PE gets a lot of hate but some of them are decent. You should see the one on Balham high Road it’s packed out with families every night of the week! Another nearby does jazz nights. It really depends on the branch. They’re usually great if you want a nice ish meal and maybe a wine and you’ve got the kids with you, because the ‘piccolo’ menu is really reasonable. For adult pizza though they’re pretty extortionate and not always great. And I would never deviate on the menu from pizza. If you have a the app you can make savings too.

I would choose an ‘authentic’ pizzeria every time obviously but I can see why it’s a go to when in a big city and you’re looking to go to a restaurant with the kids.

Jackiebrambles · 16/08/2025 07:27

I love pizza express but I would not order breaded chicken there I don’t think. No room after all the dough balls.

If it's good enough for the Royal family..

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/08/2025 07:37

YABU for going to a pizza place and ordering breaded chicken.

abricotine · 16/08/2025 07:38

We go to ours a lot although it bears no relation whatsoever to the lovely pizzas I enjoyed in the 90s! Another place pumped up by private equity borrowed cash then had the stuffing and what made it nice completely squeezed out of it along with endless shareholder cash. Ours at least has lovely staff.
the nuggets don’t surprise me at all. Once these chains are bloated beyond recognition and the profits are pumped out again they usually go bust. They are cutting corners now wherever they can. We go for simple pizzas as they aren’t too heavy but I wouldn’t eat nuggets there. It’s all freezer to plate.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/08/2025 07:44

I think they shot themselves in the
foot with those 50% off food offers back in the may. We used to go every week at work, it was shit but still 50% off…

then financial crash, covid they are trying to recoup the loss. I don’t think they will. Couldn’t tell you the last time I went to PE, before 2009 for sure.

We enjoy pizza express, go fairly regularly as they are a safe option for allergies and we all like the food. Haven't ever had the chicken goujons, but I would expect proper chicken from pizza express, not a reformed nugget, I agree with you OP, YANBU.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 16/08/2025 09:20

Obviously the correct order at pizza express is the pollo ad Astra pizza, possibly in the leggera option (for @Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice info - this is a thin based pizza with a hole in the middle they put a salad- donut shaped pizza basically). And then because you’ve gone for the healthier option pizza with salad, all the dough balls with the garlic butter. All the dough balls.

never occurred to me to order chicken strips, but in my mind that was always going to be just odd shaped nuggets. The sort of thing they put on the menu in case there’s someone in the group who doesn’t eat pizza or pasta, their heart’s not in it.

Zizzi is better chain pizza though, about the same price.

SagaNorensPorche · 16/08/2025 09:25

I’d be raging too tbf - improved recipes are rarely improved. If they ever stop their fudge cake and mascarpone combo that would be it. I love a bit of pizza express - reminds me of when DCs were small (and actually wanted to be seen with us).

Fiorentina pizza for me (before menopause made me hate eggs) 🤦🏻‍♀️

Katemax82 · 16/08/2025 09:25

I used to love going to.pizza express for their nicoise salad! I would also be pissed off at reformed chicken! How hard is it to have nice mini fillets (which is the only acceptable chicken in my opinion)?

AtomicBlondeRose · 16/08/2025 09:42

I had a boneless basket at Wetherspoon’s last week that had chicken strips and chicken bites and they were both pieces of chicken breast and not reformed stuff for way less than £8.75 so I’d certainly expect proper chicken at Pizza Express.

Doggymummar · 16/08/2025 09:45

I think it's best to order the speciality when eating out. If I wanted chicken if go to Nandos or the like.
