Made to stand and look down during haircut

i went to a different salon today
I’ve always had long hair
she said I had to stand up and “look down” for her to cut my hair
it was not a relaxing experience, I also have a bad neck from bad posture / curvature of spine and have to see physio to correct it. I kept saying “this is hurting my neck , I have a bad neck, I have physio on my neck. That I never normally have to stand to have my haircut” . I asked for an adjustable chair
she said the chair would get in the way.
she seemed annoyed with me. I didn’t complain but I won’t go back l. Is this normal ?!

Obviously a difficult situation, I think you are right she wouldn’t have been able to cut your hair or cut it properly, as there wasn’t any way to accommodate you on the day.

I wouldn’t have gone through with it personally for the sake of a trim and left without the hair cut if it would cause a health issue.

If you are changing hairdressers in future, it would perhaps be helpful to go for a consultation first, otherwise can you book the follow up appointment when you leave your usual salon, so it’s always in your schedule?

OnceIn · 16/08/2025 21:40

I have long hair and I’m always asked to stand and put my head down.

Iwannabewherethepeopleare · 16/08/2025 22:46

Not particularly aimed at anyone but would you sit with your head tilted sideways for your haircut or tucked behind your ear or facing sideways and expect it to turn out well?

Louisiannadaisy · 17/08/2025 09:09

Hairdressing lecturer here. Depending on the back of the chair length. If your hair is hanging over the chair and you cut it will leave graduation. Sometimes depending on hair length you have to stand. I’ve been an educator for Saks, Toni &Guy and teach now is a university college. Yes it’s normal! Surly the blow drying part you were sat down drinking your drink? When you got your hair washed again you will have been sat down. Standing for 20 minutes to get a precision cut is totally normal. I find it uneasy you have never stood previously.

The hairdresser I go to does not make me stand, and I feel terrible for her because she has to get so low down to cut it.

I have hypermobility and I am in constant pain and looking down really hurts my neck too but even in a chair I have to look down.

The only difference is not only am I in pain then, but so is she because she's basically playing twister on the floor to get to my ends.

My hair is also just above waist level.

I'd rather stand and then only one of us is in pain.

If maintaining long hair causes you pain maybe it's time to go for a shorter hair cut.

Maybe you should take your own advice dude.

Sounds like shorter hair would be beneficial for a couple of people on this thread

Despite your sarcastic tone, I agree with you.

I'm trying to find the right cut, because I am autistic and can't cope with my hair blowing in my face so it needs to be something that still has weight not to blow about, can be tied up easily without me having to keep my arms raised so my shoulders don't dislocate, and keeps the wind off my neck.

My hair has been grown to a length that my care givers find easier to manage as they can plait it out of the way, having had short hair most of my life, but I know having long hair is adding a lot of weight to my head.

Still, I don't complain to my hairdresser for doing what I've asked them to do, and you still have to look down for short cuts, you just don't necessarily have to stand for them, but in my case it would hurt either way.

I’m a hairdresser! This is normal, I’m surprised you’ve never had to ‘look down’ or put your head down before. This is the most important bit about a hair cut. You could maybe sit on a stool but the reason is long hair hits off the back of the chair and that creates graduation and then you’ll have a really bad finish on the ends.

IsSheOkayOrWhat · 17/08/2025 21:52

Out of interest why did you try a new salon?

As a hairdresser, this is normal if you don't want a wonky haircut

Bramshott · 18/08/2025 09:08

I had this once - very uncomfortable. I didn't go back to that salon again (and have never encountered it again, despite still having long hair).

EmeraldShamrock000 · 18/08/2025 09:11

If you sat down to relax, the hairdresser would need to get on her knees to trim the lengths.
Totally normal for longer hair.

Reebokker · 18/08/2025 16:16

The Majority (54%) are voting I am being unreasonable. I am willing to accept this verdict :) I think it is just unfortunate I have bad neck.

TBF you don't have to have long hair. If maintaining your hair causes you pain then the easiest thing would be to get a cut that isn't hard work to maintain.

Course I haven't had long hair since I was very young so don't see the point.

You seem like an absolute whingebag. Not suprised hairdresser seemed annoyed. It’s completely normal when getting a decent cut on long hair.

The whole thing is awful! Learn to cut it yourself from YouTube if it’s long. Spend the savings instead on something fun and you’ll never be pushed into such a horrible situation again. I haven’t been for a haircut in years or a colour (do my own at home) and get a lot of compliments. Any hair past bra strap length doesn’t require years of training to trim.
