Made to stand and look down during haircut

i went to a different salon today
I’ve always had long hair
she said I had to stand up and “look down” for her to cut my hair
it was not a relaxing experience, I also have a bad neck from bad posture / curvature of spine and have to see physio to correct it. I kept saying “this is hurting my neck , I have a bad neck, I have physio on my neck. That I never normally have to stand to have my haircut” . I asked for an adjustable chair
she said the chair would get in the way.
she seemed annoyed with me. I didn’t complain but I won’t go back l. Is this normal ?!

It’s completely normal. If your hair is longer than the back of the chair, they can’t cut it straight on the chair.

It normally only takes about couple of mins though? And you can stay sat down for the majority of it.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 15/08/2025 16:42

This is absolutely normal. Happens to me every time I get my hair cut

Legomania · 15/08/2025 16:43

My hairdresser does this at the end of my haircut to check that all the lengths are the same length. She wouldn't be able to do that bit with me sitting as the chair back would be in the way - but the rest of the cut is done sitting down. I'm surprised she didn't explain her reasoning though.

BauhausOfEliott · 15/08/2025 16:43

This is totally normal for cutting long hair. Lots of hairdressers do it.

I didn’t know it was normal as it’s never happened anywhere else like Tony & guy, Aveda salons etc.
I had to stand the whole time it was being cut and “look down” - is that normal ?

For a minute or 2 I can understand. But do you mean the duration?

Yeah it’s normal. What is not normal is her not listening to you that it was hurting - that was dismissive and rude of her, she should have made accommodations.

19lottie82 · 15/08/2025 16:46

Yes, totally normal.

No. I wouldn't say standing for the whole time was normal.

Granted I dont go to the hairdresser. But when I have been my hair had always been long. Mid back length. Im also 6ft tall, so having me stand just wouldn't work!

IndyNial · 15/08/2025 16:46

I have had to stand and look down for a short time for them just to doublecheck that it is straight. It never has been for the entire cut though.

A hairdresser who ‘makes’ you do this, despite you citing a problematic neck is behaving unprofessionally and potentially putting your health and her livelihood at risk.

TheWatersofMarch · 15/08/2025 16:47

I used to have long hair and this was how the hairdresser cut my hair. I stood and she sat on a sort of scootie stool. I got breaks sitting eg when she did the fringe/front.

standing wasn’t so bad, I was in comfy shoes. but the looking down was main problem

I have long hair and I've never had to stand during a haircut but I'm in the US. They look at it at the end, but that's it. Is yours longer than waist length?

I cut my own now.

I’ve had this once where I had to stand for the duration. It wasn’t the nice haircut I was used to, so I don’t think you’re being unreasonable to want to sit down and be comfortable!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/08/2025 16:50

Yes, that is how DD has her hair cut. It’s about half way down her back.

Did the new salon have chairs with higher backs than where you’ve been in the past? Or is your hair much longer than last time you had it cut?

The hairstylist should not have been dismissive of your concerns though.

No it’s above waist length

I have never had to stand for a haircut and mine has varied in length from shoulder to waist over the years.

Back of chair was higher than length of hair .
ive not really noticed chair height anywhere else tbh. I think must be fairly standard. This is a reputable salon chain. I have been asked to stand at end of cut before to check if straight etc

My friend has very long hair and always has to stand for most of the time they’re cutting her hair. She gets to sit when they’re cutting the bits that frame her face.

MeringueOutang · 15/08/2025 16:53

I've had hair down to my elbows and they've never cut it like this! I have always been able to sit down for a cut.
