Made to stand and look down during haircut

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 16:39

i went to a different salon today
I’ve always had long hair
she said I had to stand up and “look down” for her to cut my hair
it was not a relaxing experience, I also have a bad neck from bad posture / curvature of spine and have to see physio to correct it. I kept saying “this is hurting my neck , I have a bad neck, I have physio on my neck. That I never normally have to stand to have my haircut” . I asked for an adjustable chair
she said the chair would get in the way.
she seemed annoyed with me. I didn’t complain but I won’t go back l. Is this normal ?!

ok I’ll just take my experience back to where I came from then as obviously twenty years has taught me nothing at all and I’ve also quite obviously trained the 40 ish member of staff wrongly as well . Thanks for letting me know that really appreciate it .

Well it's up to you but if my hairdresser tried to make me stand up for the duration of my haircut he wouldn't see me again.

He owns two salons, has a great reputation, and my hair always looks lovely after a cut but I guess your way of having uncomfortable clients stood around your salon is also working out for you.

Hairstylist here 🙋🏼‍♀️ yes I have done this many times with a client that has long hair, your head is down so you get an even cut other wise you get what's called graduation on the hair, basically it would be uneven, I only do this for the back tho & sit a client back down for cutting the sides & layers if any. Also if you were in pain the hairdresser should have offered you a little break to relax your neck before continuing with the cut.

We are talking about a “ cut “ a the back I’ll add as stated above sides can be cut sat down so we are talking 5-10 minutes at most ( for a qualified experienced stylist who works in a fast paced salon ) not a mention of the rest of the service .

and also I think your actually being quite argumentative and quite rude and unkind and there is absolutely no need for it whatsoever, I answered a question on here regarding the posters experience not for somebody else to jump in and start questioning my experience of my career.

What a lovely person you are .

I didn't question your career.

OP states she was made to stand for the whole cut, I said it wasn't normal, you jumped in to say that my hairdresser must be lazy and shoddy, so it was you that was disparaging of someone else's work.

You seem very difficult and argumentative, but as I said, if that works for your client base, more power to you.

I wouldn't come back to your salon after being made to stand up, listen to you say rude things and then called a not nice person if I disagree with you.

What you experience yourself and what a stylist has knowledge on are two separate things , I wouldn’t dare question someone else’s career or trade so please don’t do it to mine !

Wow just wow this forum never fails to amaze or amuse me !

Original poster send in a complaint if you’re not happy and let the manager speak to her staff if it’s as clear cut as you’ve said then a good manager will address the situation in an unbiased way and be able to unpick why and what hapenned , good luck x

First, YOU were the one who called MY stylist lazy and shoddy.

Second, if my doctor ordered me to stand in an uncomfortable position for the duration of the appointment I'd question his credentials too. Especially after he'd said the reason other doctors I'd seen let me sit down is because the are all lazy and shoddy.

Third, and coincidentally for the third time, I'm glad it works for you, it wouldn't work for me, but as the chances of me accidentally ending up in your salon are slim, have a good day.

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 16:45

I didn’t know it was normal as it’s never happened anywhere else like Tony & guy, Aveda salons etc.
I had to stand the whole time it was being cut and “look down” - is that normal ?

Very normal. I’ve got long, very thick hair and I have to do it at times for a large portion of my cut, in multiple salons, for it to be cut to as perfect as possible.

The chains you mention are notorious for teaching a ‘one size fits all’ approach and have their own academies, generally not well approved from the wider community. Which shows in you not having your hair cut like that before, and also potentially the length of time you had to stand - mitigating the poor cut done previously.

bluesunnyskies · 16/08/2025 02:39

I think it would depend on your hair length. When I go for a trim, the hairdresser pumps the chair up high and pushes my head down while sitting behind me. My hair goes to mid-back. They check on my comfort before they start (I fill in an online form) and one of the questions is about physical discomfort.

As an aside I love how they quote the price and write it down for the services I am there for. They wait for an ok from me before starting. No surprises.

I think I would chalk this hairdresser up to experience and find another one that can accommodate what you need.

Reebokker · 16/08/2025 05:32

Iwannabewherethepeopleare · 15/08/2025 23:44

The back of the chair still gets in the way. If it was a layered cut you’d probably have been able to sit more as they pull up and out but it’s not to do with reaching hair it’s getting the angle right for no long bits underneath. If you look straight on, or the stylist pulls hair towards them to cut (chair in the way) when you lean forward the hair at your crown is shorter than at the back. So you see some unevenness.

I see what you mean , thx

I suspect there’s more to this than what you’ve actually posted , I’ve been working in salons since 14 and qualified since 18 , when cutting hair you need to be sat down legs uncrossed and chin down onto the chest to get a straight even cut this is standard and if you have a look on Google it will explain why the head position effects a cut due to angles etc . If the hair sits over the back of the chair then indeed I would do a cut stood up to get a perfect finish , however that being said if you had stated to me what you had then at that point I would have said unfortunately I can do my best but if you are not in the correct position I will not be able to ensure your cut is fully even are you happy for me to proceed .

was the stylist experienced ? Did you inform her before starting the cut that you had these problems because if this was a salon of good standard and also a chain salon I really am struggling to understand all of this.

No, I didn’t tell her before she started cutting my hair that I had a bad neck. It was only when standing looking down that I realised it was hurting.
I see what you mean that standing , chin to chest is needed for a straight cut for long hair.
it’s just unfortunate I have this neck problem.
She was young but I don’t think inexperienced.
I did want a good cut. I would have been unhappy with unevenness.
What more do you suspect ? What makes you suspicious?

That’s your view though. She might of had a normal tone if voice. Or she might be very tired. Be kind!

This is true. I do try to be kind. It’s not nice being in pain, I was upset . I understand this is normal technique for many though and she was doing her best .

Be more assertive. If you are in pain then say stop.

I guess I just realised I wasn’t going to be able to have my hair cut properly there if I didn’t do as asked. I didn’t have time to go elsewhere. My usual salon was fully booked.

in my twenty years of experience and working in many salons until finally owning my own with 4 member of staff under me I can quite honestly say this is “ lazy shoddy “ hairdressing you don’t look at the back of your bottom layers of hair and sides can be cut evenly with no problem as there is no restriction there and hairdressers know this … well anyone knows this as it’s you that cant see it so as said above laziness from stylists who don’t take pride in their work . I’d love to say that’s few and far between but unfortunately it is not .

thank You .
so you wouldn’t ask someone to stand & look down / chin to chest?
in fairness the cut looks good, have checked in mirror, so she did a good job in that regard.
it’s just unfortunate about my neck problem.

i did & she did but I wasn’t going to be able to get the hair cut finished unless I accepted I was going to be in pain as that’s how they do it there apparently :(

Many moons ago when I was 18 I agreed to let a trainee hairdresser trim my very long hair and I was standing up with head down for aaages so she could get a straight cut. I closed my eyes and thought ‘ooh I’m starting to feel a little groggy’. Next thing I knew I was in a heap on the floor. Never fainted before or since, but it traumatised the poor young hairdresser 🙈

Yes it's normal, why do you keep asking?

StarTrek1 · 16/08/2025 06:39

If your head was dipped the entire 20
minutes, how did they do your sides?

Did you only get the back of your hair cut?

Falseknock · 16/08/2025 06:54

Mushroo · 15/08/2025 16:41

It’s completely normal. If your hair is longer than the back of the chair, they can’t cut it straight on the chair.

It normally only takes about couple of mins though? And you can stay sat down for the majority of it.

I've always had long hair and I have always been seated. It's not normal at all.

Falseknock · 16/08/2025 06:54

I kept lifting my head as neck was killing me
she would just say, when you’re ready look down

So she did actually try to accommodate you?

I’ve had long hair my whole life. I’ve actually never sat down for a haircut! I sit down for a short period when they do my layers around my face.

Falseknock · 16/08/2025 06:54

If you’ve never been made to put your head down for a cut, then yes, that is not normal. That is the first thing that is always done. That is the guideline.
