Made to stand and look down during haircut

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 16:39

i went to a different salon today
I’ve always had long hair
she said I had to stand up and “look down” for her to cut my hair
it was not a relaxing experience, I also have a bad neck from bad posture / curvature of spine and have to see physio to correct it. I kept saying “this is hurting my neck , I have a bad neck, I have physio on my neck. That I never normally have to stand to have my haircut” . I asked for an adjustable chair
she said the chair would get in the way.
she seemed annoyed with me. I didn’t complain but I won’t go back l. Is this normal ?!

The hairdresser I go to does not make me stand, and I feel terrible for her because she has to get so low down to cut it.

I have hypermobility and I am in constant pain and looking down really hurts my neck too but even in a chair I have to look down.

The only difference is not only am I in pain then, but so is she because she's basically playing twister on the floor to get to my ends.

My hair is also just above waist level.

I'd rather stand and then only one of us is in pain.

If maintaining long hair causes you pain maybe it's time to go for a shorter hair cut.

Wynter25 · 15/08/2025 16:55

Totally normal. I have to stand up

afaloren · 15/08/2025 16:56

I have to do this too, I also have long hair. It’s quite normal.

Apollonia1 · 15/08/2025 16:57

I’ve always had long hair (nearly waist-length) and never had to stand to get it cut.

I would have just refused and said I can’t stand with my head looking down, due to a neck injury. They’d have to find another solution.

Maintaing long hair doesn’t cause me pain though? Just this particular incident did. So why would you tell me to have my hair cut shorter?!

Sitting and putting my head down is not as painful as standing and putting head down for some reason. I think I’ve never been asked to put my head down quite so much before, normally just tilted down slighty.
my hair isn’t super long.

Edited

I wish I’d been firmer . I was worried she’d just do a shit job or they’d tell me to go elsewhere & needed it done before holiday

Why don't salons have tall stools? Never seen people standing for the duration. A tall stool for the client and a small stool for the stylist.

Helen1625 · 15/08/2025 17:02

My daughter has long hair, heading towards waist length and we've been to 2 salons and neither has asked her to stand. One hairdresser just bends, she'll tell my daughter to put her head forward for a couple of minutes, usually to make sure the underneath and top lengths are the same. The other salon, I remember she had a wheelie chair and she sat behind my daughter to cut.

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 17:02

I kept lifting my head as neck was killing me
she would just say, when you’re ready look down

I used to have long hair and this was how the hairdresser cut my hair. I stood and she sat on a sort of scootie stool. I got breaks sitting eg when she did the fringe/front.

Can I just ask, if you have to stand because of your hair being really long therefore the seat back would be in the way, why can't you just sit on a stool then? Am I missing something really obvious or wouldn't that be alot more comfortable for the person having the haircut?

K0OLA1D · 15/08/2025 17:06

Well I couldn't stand for the duration, so they would have to find another way.

I voted YANBU OP. And I still dont think you are!

Looking down the entire cut is definitely not normal. Or correct technique.

Looking down at the start while they cut the guideline and the end while they check for strays, but if you looked down the entire time, the cut will not sit right once you relax your posture. You should be looking straight ahead with relaxed shoulders.

I would ask someone to photograph the back of your hair to check if it is cut straight.

LBFseBrom · 15/08/2025 17:08

It is normal but shouldn't last for long.

runningonberocca · 15/08/2025 17:12

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 16:45

I didn’t know it was normal as it’s never happened anywhere else like Tony & guy, Aveda salons etc.
I had to stand the whole time it was being cut and “look down” - is that normal ?

Has happened to me almost everywhere- including for years at Toni &Guy and at various Aveda hairdressers. Totally normal for long hair but it’s only for a couple of mins not the entire haircut

JLou08 · 15/08/2025 17:13

Was she pregnant? I've always had to put my head down during cuts. I only had to stand once and that was when the hair dresser was heavily pregnant.

MummytoaMiracle01 · 15/08/2025 17:32

When I took my 4 year old DD for her haircut she had to stand the entire time for the same reason . Seems pretty normal .

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 15/08/2025 17:35

My hair is almost at my waist and I've never had to stand more than 1-2 minutes.

Hotandbotheredaching · 15/08/2025 17:38

Not normal to stand the whole time, it is normal to stand 2mins to check the cut and it’s the same each side as people can sit funny on hips

Jaggy1 · 15/08/2025 17:39

You need to put your head down so your hair is cut evenly, this will happen at the back for every haircut ever unless your hair is super short.

No hairdresser ever should have you facing down as they cut the sides, you need to face straight ahead for the sides for them to be even, is your hair not completely wonky at the sides? If not you can’t have had it down the whole time.

BeesUnicornPot · 15/08/2025 17:41

I’m 5 foot 6 with long hair and I’ve never had to stand for a haircut.

I had to when I was a child and I definitely wouldn’t like to have to stand in the hairdressers. 😬😵‍💫

Not paying hard earned cash for that, can’t they put the chair higher up? Most of this swivel chairs seem adjustable?

Very odd

outerspacepotato · 15/08/2025 17:42

Reebokker · 15/08/2025 16:50

No it’s above waist length

I've had hair down to my hips, usually waist length. I've had cuts in people's homes and at salons and I've never had to stand up. I've never seen anyone doing this either.

I think that's nuts having to stand for the whole thing and the looking down when you have neck issues is bullshit. I'd find a new stylist.

Quicknamechange2025 · 15/08/2025 17:47

My LO has had to stand but her hairs bum length and my hairdressers is tall lol.

RachelshouldhavegonetoParis · 15/08/2025 17:48

Really? I have v long hair (lower back/bum length) and have had for most of my life. I’ve only ever stood up right at the end like @Legomania.

Robin67 · 15/08/2025 17:55

I have never had to do this other than for a minute at the end

Plastictreees · 15/08/2025 17:56

Yes, I have very long hair and stand for part of the hair cut. Usually for no more than 5-10 mins. The rest can be done seated. How long were you standing?!
