It's become an industry in North America. There have been lots of TV shows about it, people go on Bigfoot hunting tours and Bigfoot merch sells well. Thousands of people, especially in the northwest, claim to have encountered them and some of them are pretty unimpeachable witnesses. An organization that keeps track of North American sightings claims to have documented over 10,000 witnesses. However, you'd think that in the smartphone age there would be better pictures to go along with the sightings. Then again, that could be because they're terrified and either freeze or run like hell. If somebody is just standing there calmly filming it then it would seem most likely that it's been faked.
One thing I find puzzling is why people believe in God, a supposed metaphysical being nobody has ever seen, but scoff at Bigfoot, a supposed hominid species lots of people claim to have seen. Many people also believe in ghosts but scoff at Bigfoot. I'm agnostic so I neither believe nor disbelieve, and that applies to anything weird/supernatural.
