Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

I live in (apparently) a well-heeled part of England and, quite frankly, l am far more bothered by the increasing amounts of human poo on grass verges outside of people's houses.

Denim4ever · 15/08/2025 13:28

I think they sometimes are disgusted and often don't take fair responsibility for the poop. On bin day down our lane many dog owners put their poop bags in our bins. They look round to see if anyone is watching. If I'm quick enough I'm out the front door 🤣

Rainydayinlondon · 15/08/2025 13:31

And then swing the bag jauntily around as they walk. I don’t want someone’s dog’s poo anywhere NEAR me.

And why do they allow dogs to poo on the pavement as there’s always “residue”. Drag it to the kerb/a tree and pick it up from there.

mugglewump · 15/08/2025 13:31

It is exactly like your own baby's filled nappies. Your own dog's poo is bearable. Happily walk along swinging a plastic bag full of poo.

Collaborate · 15/08/2025 13:31

I do wonder if people who can't understand people's willingness to pick up their dog's poo have a problem wiping their own arse. I don't see the difference. If you can do one you can do the other.

The bag can't protect you from the smell, though. Nor the seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth...

It's not like you carry it around with you for the rest of the day though! The key is to make sure your dog is on decent food so the poo is always firm. I have a large dog and hers are the size of a toddler's forearm so sometimes it's a two-bag job…

ArabiattaPrawn · 15/08/2025 13:34

No issue picking up poo, although it's less easy when I have DS in the carrier and I'm trying to keep his flapping hands from getting to it 🫠 but the idea of picking up someone else's dog poo makes me feel quite queasy.

Mrsbloggz · 15/08/2025 13:36

If I see anything dog related on the horizon I give it a wide birth; be that the creature itself or the human with a bag of feaces in hand🤢🤮

Agree dog poo residue is gross but have you ever tried to drag a dog when it's trying to do it's business? Near impossible and also pretty mean. Imagine sitting on the bog about to drop one and someone suddenly yanks you to the side.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 15/08/2025 13:37

It’s part and parcel of having a dog. Not my favourite thing to do, but needs must.
own a dog, and you sign up to dealing with it.
I know people get annoyed when people compare the two, but in this case it is no different to knowing that part of having kids is dealing with shit, sick, snot, head lice etc. You do it because you love the creator.
Warm, fresh poo is also more pleasant than cold poo.

indignantpigmy · 15/08/2025 13:38

It is the most demeaning thing about owning a dog, I hate it, but really love my dog. Luckily I have plenty of land to let my dog run so I rarely pick it up. If I am taking my dog out I let her run around our fields first to empty her out, sometimes I get lucky but I'm always surprised by the amount she can produce. I also only take her places with bins because I am repulsed by bags of shit dangling from windscreen wipers and tow bars. Sometimes I double or even triple bag but I can still smell it through the bags which I really don't understand.

In the winter my parents argue about who gets to pick up the poo, my father has been known to walk with a bag of fresh, steaming poo in his pocket to keep his hands warm. Once he forget to empty his pockets and it festered for days before they traced the smell.

I had no problems with my DC nappies, I briefly had a nappy bin in the house but I found that disgusting so used an outside bin but I really can't deal with eldery, incontinent relatives.

Funnily enough, I married a farmer and can happily paddle through cow shit and have zero problems with handling it. I just view that as recycled grass with no nasties in it.

KimberleyClark · 15/08/2025 13:40

Parents - how do shitty nappies not disgust you?

Empress13 · 15/08/2025 13:40

What else is the poor dog to do ! It has a digestive system . Not picking it up is the issue

Cherrytree86 · 15/08/2025 13:41

Standingtree · 15/08/2025 13:09

You love your dog so much and they look super cute when they crouch to poo.The poo is warm in winter, I don't mind picking it up I want the neighbours ro exxept my dog so try to be as respectful of where he poos and pees.

@Standingtree

they don’t look cute shitting and there must be better ways to warm your hands in winter than picking up shit

RedDeer · 15/08/2025 13:42

I don't mind picking my owns dog poo up, as I know shes healthy and wormed regularly.

What im not a fan of is carrying the bags around if we are not near a bin, or driving home with a bag in the boot as again bin. (Obviously I do do this but it's not my favourite thing). We hike a lot so have this issue. Car parks should have bins at least IMO.

chattyness · 15/08/2025 13:42

You just get used to it and the sooner you bag it and get it contained & into the dog poop bin the better! All poo stinks doesn't it.

Dangermoo · 15/08/2025 13:43

The only thing i sit in dread of is the next daily goady dog bitching thread. You hold your breath, bend down and bag it. How else are you meant to deal with it FFS.

bugalugs45 · 15/08/2025 13:43

I’ve got a big dog who’s raw fed so tiny poos, not the best part of my day but as others have said , it’s same as changing a child’s nappy , it’s not great but it’s got to be done ! He eats therefore he 💩, same as us !

TreeDudette · 15/08/2025 13:43

Dog poo is not really any worse than human poo. I wipe my own on the daily and wiped my kids for years. We luckily live in an area with quite a few bins so I don't normally have to carry the bag far.

saywhatdidhesay · 15/08/2025 13:44

It gets picked up. I don’t think my dogs poo is any less disgusting but accept as part of having a dog that I pick it up.

whiteroseredrose · 15/08/2025 13:45

Gnarab24 · 15/08/2025 13:10

Funnily enough I find picking up cold poo (when I’m picking up the garden pops) more stomach churning than a ‘just laid’ poo.

Me too!

in answer to the original question, it’s a bit like changing nappies. Fine when it’s your own baby (or dog). Not so much when it is someone else’s.

Dearg · 15/08/2025 13:45

It’s definitely different when it’s your own dog, a dog that you love.

Personally, I hate picking up cold poo, other dogs poo, or poo which has flies on it 🤢, but having had two labs with very efficient & regular digestive systems, I have learned which bags work best, where the nearest bins are, and in general when the dog is likely to need both.

I share your disgust at owners who don’t pick up.

TitaniasAss · 15/08/2025 13:46

My massive dogs shites are bigger than my head, but it's just part and parcel of being a responsible dog owner. I can't say I love it, but I love him.

Rosesandteashops · 15/08/2025 13:47

I can't say it's a pleasure but you do it because you have to. What does make me barf though is picking up other dogs' poo. There's a patch of grass outside my house that is often decorated with brown lumps and I feel I near to clear it up before I tread in it or drive over it. That does make me gag.

God I know. I can't stand walking behind someone doing this.
