To not be fazed by job interviews and to find it odd how much anxiety they cause for others?

I’m not saying I enjoy them but I just don’t get nervous. I prepare, I show up, I speak clearly and that’s it. It’s not something I dread or overthink. But I’ve noticed a lot of people talk about interviews like they’re this massive ordeal and it’s made me wonder if I’m missing something, or if others are overhyping the stress.

AIBU to think interviews don’t have to be that big a deal?

What are your interviews like? My interviews can involve multiple stages, with presentations. Are you senior?

They’ve been a mix - some with presentations, some just panel Q&A. I’m senior and I’ve had my share of multi-stage ones too.

Do you ever get the job though? 😂

Yes, I’ve been offered every job I’ve interviewed for.

Some key reasons people experience nerves in any situations:

  1. Novelty - it's not something they do very often
  2. Experience - either a bad past experience or they know it's not their natural strength
  3. High stakes - the outcome matters

All of those could be in play for an interview. Not that hard to understand, surely?

Three words including a colour. Once you start noticing the pattern, youll see it ten times a day. Either AI, or started by mumsnet to be provocative.

To be fair when you join, they suggest some new user names for you. The website i mean. They are pretty random.

I couldn't be bothered to make one up. So I chose one that was suggested. It isn't three words, but it does have a colour and an animal in it.

That's probably all it is.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/08/2025 23:58

I do if I really need the job - I get very nervous then and don’t do well.

The interviews I’ve done well at are when I don’t have a real need of the job - when it would be a “nice to have” rather than crucial.

But I do bounce back after they go wrong, so I tend to get there in the end.

Could have seen that reply coming a mile off

Um, good for you?
I have have crying fits, thrown up, and passed out... in interviews. I can't help it.

I'm not fazed either, and I'm generally good at them, it's quite natural for me. Likewise, no problem whatsoever with public speaking.
On the other hand, I'm unable to think straight if I see a spider or a dragonfly.

I’m similar, I quite enjoy interviews and am very comfortable with public speaking. Having to network and make small talk however has me climbing the walls - we’re all different.

Look for the pattern and realise how many times you see it where its the OP of a provocative thread title, and its the only post ever made by the username. It may be suggested when you sign up, but it is definitely a sign of a bot or ai. This thread is unusual as the OP has returned.

You can’t start a thread like this and not give advice/pointers

I think it’s great you’ve been so successful @DearPeachBiscuit. It’s a real skill, both being able to compose succinct replies to answer the question and remain calm. I find competency based interviews difficult like give an example where xyz, and there’s a formula (STAR or similar) to getting the answer to hit all the marks being looked for, without over elaborating. Well done. Tips welcome!

The OP is here only to gloat, not give advice and pointers.

chachahide · 14/08/2025 01:48

I don’t get that nervous in them, I think it’s a bit like a date, I’m either right for them or I’m not, and if I’m not it’s best I don’t get the job anyway!

I’m curious though, what does scare you Op?

ALunchbox · 14/08/2025 05:01

I really enjoy interviews and exams but it's probably because I have never been desperate for a job or a good mark so I'm never particularly disappointed if I don't get it or get a poor mark.

Agix · 14/08/2025 05:43

I don't get nervous in interviews. I also don't really prepare. They either like me, or they don't. I also don't know how I can prepare anyway, when I dont know the questions being asked.

I prefer interview processes which include other stages which allow me to demonstrate the work I can do.

I don't find it "odd" that they cause anxiety in others though. I get anxious about a lot of things other people don't bat an eyelid over, so I understand that people are just different.

spoonbillstretford · 14/08/2025 05:45

I'm confident now, but when I was younger and knew I lacked experience and confidence it was much more nerve-wracking.

BondAway25 · 14/08/2025 05:53

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 12/08/2025 22:12

You type of OPs always have three word user names. Why?

It's like AI has chosen a name from 'what 3 words'! 🤣

they're always very full of themselves & belittling of others.

You can start any goady thread you like. Nothing to say they have to be helpful or genuine.

See that's just the extreme other end of the scale to OP and just as off putting. Wild behaviour.

TheaBrandt1 · 14/08/2025 06:00

I’m the same with public speaking I quite like it my friends all dearest it.

Dangermoo · 14/08/2025 08:08

DearPeachBiscuit · 13/08/2025 23:27

Yes, I’ve been offered every job I’ve interviewed for.

I take it humility, wasn't listed as an essential criterion, then?

5128gap · 14/08/2025 08:23

Excellent. Provided you never apply for a job where you're expected to understand that people are all different, that not fearing something isn't a virtue, it's fearing something and doing it anyway that speaks of character, and that confidence and competence are not the same, you'll be great.

FenderStrat · 14/08/2025 08:27

I don't think you'd make a very good boss to be honest.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 14/08/2025 08:29

I had a panic attack during my last job interview and had to leave the room. It was humiliating and, needless to say, I didn’t get the job. I don’t think I’m overhyping my experience.

Yuja · 14/08/2025 08:30

I also find interviews fairly straightforward but it is absolutely not beyond me to understand why others find them tricky. Can you really not see what people might be nervous about??
