To not be fazed by job interviews and to find it odd how much anxiety they cause for others?

I’m not saying I enjoy them but I just don’t get nervous. I prepare, I show up, I speak clearly and that’s it. It’s not something I dread or overthink. But I’ve noticed a lot of people talk about interviews like they’re this massive ordeal and it’s made me wonder if I’m missing something, or if others are overhyping the stress.

AIBU to think interviews don’t have to be that big a deal?

Good for you.

lnks · 12/08/2025 22:10

The thing you are missing is empathy

KrisAkabusi · 12/08/2025 22:12

Well done. Have a biscuit.🍪

Are one of those blessed people who can live on fresh air and sleep up a tree, so getting a job is optional?

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 12/08/2025 22:12

You type of OPs always have three word user names. Why?

Three words including a colour. Once you start noticing the pattern, youll see it ten times a day. Either AI, or started by mumsnet to be provocative.

AI maybe

Give over. It’s a username generated by Mumsnet when you sign up. Have a rest.

Maybe other people have more at stake than you. Maybe they fear not doing well at the interview means having another Christmas without good presents for their children. Have some empathy as someone said. Your post comes across as very smug.

IncaDoodle · 12/08/2025 22:15

No, I’m not particularly bothered about them either.

But.. I’m always well prepared and I’m a fairly cool cucumber in the moment, it’s generally after an event that I’ll get a bit shaky.

Best thing to remember is that we’re all different, and what does it matter? You do you. Never worry about anyone else.

WhatcakeshalIIbaketoday · 12/08/2025 22:18

I voted yanbu because there are people who find interviews easy. I’m certainly not one of them!

Abitlosttoday · 12/08/2025 22:19

Until about four years ago, I never got too nervous for job interviews. Then a series of events knocked my confidence at work. The first was my manager saying I was in line for promotion, interviewing me with another senior colleague, and then failing to tell me I couldn't have the job after all for a full month. I eventually had 14 unsuccessful interviews, with my fear growing each time. By the end, I was taking beta blockers, having interview coaching, I even had a small glass of wine for one (remote) interview. Before all this, up to about 40 years old, I got every job I EVER interviewed for. It became a full-on phobia and a lot rides on a job interview. My family's future being the main concern.
You might be fazed one day. It's not such a huge leap of imagination.

ShowOfHands · 12/08/2025 22:20

I don't find them troublesome at all but completely understand why some people do. Equally, I like spiders, am not bothered by heights and can stand up happily in front of hundreds of people and talk. However, I also acknowledge that other people find these things terrible. Just part of life's rich tapestry.

There are dozens of things I can't do which others find a breeze eg. I can't burp, look at clusters of holes, watch Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Running Man or eat a weetabix upside down.

Persephoneofhell · 12/08/2025 22:21

Lucky you.
I actually get so stressed I can barely speak. I go in very very well prepared and evidence that with the presentation content etc. But I literally loose the ability to speak. So I don't do that well at interview.
I am an excellent employee though and never been out of a job. It baffles people. So I have been head hunted and taken on following informal chats or straight from qualifying originally.
The best people are not always the best at interview, we have had some horrors over the years who did amazingly at interview.

Love this. So true. 🫶🏻

Helpmefindmysoul · 12/08/2025 22:31

How long do you prep for before the interview? I prepared for one last week and it said guideline of 45 mins I was done in 25. Most of the questions they asked me they didn’t do a follow up question 🤷‍♀️ not holding my breath.

Honestly, I usually do a couple of hours over a few days - more about making sure I can talk through examples confidently than memorising anything. I think sometimes interviewers don’t follow up if they feel you’ve covered enough in your first answer.

So you never quite found the right job then OP? Otherwise you wouldn't be so cocky about your interview abilities as you must have had a few interviews and not many long-term jobs to be so knowledgeable on the subject.

GreyCarpet · 12/08/2025 22:41

Ate you really si lacking in imagination that you can't work out the answer to this yourself?

Or are you just showing off on an anonymous forum?

I don't get particularly nervous either but I can imagine many reasons why someone would.

mintgreensoftlilac · 12/08/2025 22:54

Depends what it’s for, there are many many contextual factors. On two occasions I’ve had interviews where, if successful, it would literally change my life, so I would say that it is reasonable to feel a bit of anxiety/nerves/pressure as it was a huge opportunity that I didn’t want to waste.

On a different occasion it was for a small but significant promotion, so a lot less pressure but I still spent time and effort preparing for it and felt nervous beforehand and whilst awaiting the outcome, which I would say is quite normal.

Enko · 12/08/2025 22:59

I dont get neevous about exams I quite enjoy the adrenaline rush.

However I understand others do not feel this way and feel nervous about it.

Your post seems to lack this insight.

Dangermoo · 13/08/2025 09:10

I can only imagine how long your list of answers is to the "what are your strengths" question.

Dangermoo · 13/08/2025 09:13

Bet OP is that "one" on any interview panel; the one that loves to trip an interviewee up.

As an aside, I've always found interview panels wank - unless you're recruiting for top brass. I'm sure interviews would be far more conducive to a relaxed atmosphere, if it were a sit down with a cuppa and informal chat setting.

SpaceRaccoon · 13/08/2025 09:15

Lucky old you. It's not a choice to get very nervous or anxious, everyone would choose to find things a breeze if they could.

fatgirlswims · 13/08/2025 09:15

It’s hard to explain if you don’t experience it but I am the most prepared and knowledgeable person and didn’t feel nervous or worried BUT my body let me down and my throat closed up and I couldn’t speak I was choking out words. This triggers a spiral decline and all you can focus on is the awful sensation of dying

but yes: here’s some empathy 🎁
