to say AI has ruined the home decor side of Pinterest?

It used to be such a great source of inspiration for home interiors but now the majority of images I find are AI. At first glance everything looks lovely, then the closer you look you see how impractible the designs/ideas are, along with the telltale smoothness and glow of the generated images.

Image attached is an example - so the water from the shower is just meant to pool on the floor between the bath and the fixed screen?

AIBU to say it's ruined the user experience as most time is spent trying to find real life spaces and designs that actually work!

Yeah I've noticed this too and it's crap I need to renovate and it's not been useful at all

Yes we're renovating too, it's such a shame as it used to be great a few years ago. I'm trying to get inspo for a tiny en suite currently and the AI designs do not give an accurate representation of the featured lighting in such a small space. Annoying!

Totally agree. It’s the same for hairstyles - the majority of them are AI images now I think. Pointless - I want to see how real women look with real hair 🙄.

woolflower · 11/08/2025 21:31

I agree.
I reckon it’ll be the death of Pinterest, it’s become totally unusable for inspiration

Oh yes, all those quick and easy updo's and curls that are apparently achievable with hair as soft as silk...

I don't believe I've found anything yet that has been improved by adding AI

MoltenLasagne · 11/08/2025 21:58

Yanbu, yet again AI is taking something useful and interesting that a community of people have made and is turning it to shit. Agree with a PP that it will be the death of Pinterest in the end.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 11/08/2025 22:14

Yanbu!!

I noticed that I cant even 'not interested' a post without clicking on and expanding it first

wanderingtopographer · 11/08/2025 22:15

Same experience here. I've used Pinterest for many years and it is so weird and vapid now; have just had a glance at my now little used app and approx 75% images are AI generated shite. Just feels so "samey" if that makes sense?

YellowZebraStripes · 11/08/2025 22:19

It's also ruining You Tube...though also scarey how like reality the videos are.

Teacup40 · 11/08/2025 22:19

Your not wrong, I'd not used it for a while, I went on it the other day and thought the same it's rubbish now! It's a shame.

puffylovett1 · 11/08/2025 22:22

100% agree!

A lot of photo stuff on your phone uses AI, e.g. red eye removal, or google photos being able to find photos of named people etc. The language stuff and images are way behind all the useful stuff that you don't even notice.

SoloSofa24 · 11/08/2025 22:29

Same on instagram. I have blocked a lot of accounts that just post AI-generated interiors, but they keep being promoted in my feed.

YelloDaisy · 11/08/2025 22:30

On radio today they were talking about AI books -books ‘written’ using info online of eg sportsperson and making a fake biography, sold on Amazon

Olive567 · 11/08/2025 22:33

I've recently been using Pintrest for new house purchase ideas - and totally agree. I want to see real working homes not churned out AI ideas that provide nothing fresh or unexpected

Yes, it's just lots of images of the same design/colourway/layout but slightly tweaked each time. I never want to see another hanging houseplant! Such a shame.

I'm predicting a lot of false or misleading information courtesy of AI, those "authors" out for a quick buck could end up being sued surely?

The rain shower looks like it’s floating😂maybe it’s a hover shower, so it moves with you and ensures no water goes over the floor!

I agree however it is good for us interior architects/designers. It s good that everyone can get home inspo and get on with their renovations, but there is a reason why I have trained for a long time and have over 20yrs experience in the field and thats because I know how space works no matter how small or how big. And i m not the only ones.
disclaimer: i m not talking about so called interior designers who are actually decorators (soft furnishing, window treatments and vases/coffee table books) but actual designers who can work form and function, flow, light, design lightings and can project manage a full on renovation.

It's levitating!

If only Pinterest could link to where to purchase one like the good old days... oh no wait.

Do you get clients who have unrealistic expectations caused by AI images? I vaguely remember seeing a guy getting upset online because his builder said absolutely no way to tiling the ceiling of his shower enclosure like the image he'd seen.

Swoopingswift · 11/08/2025 23:55

I agree, I’ve been trying to get inspiration for my kitchen renovation and Pinterest has been useless with all the AI images.

In the end I started looking up houses for sale similar to mine on Zoopla, and looked at how they have designed their kitchens for layout ideas (or what not to do!).

I also follow House & Garden as their articles are based on real people’s houses.

However, if you are bored, it’s sometimes fun with the kids to play ‘spot the weird stuff in AI images’ on Pinterest.
All those lovely rooms that have light fittings suspended mid-air, and 3 legged chairs, mismatched cupboard handles, and sinks with no taps, and cupboards with oven controls, or even an oven under a sink …. and oh so many hanging plants…. and often a big window with a beautiful forest just outside 😂

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 12/08/2025 00:00

Not just home decor. A lot of the food inspo pictures are now AI
