to say AI has ruined the home decor side of Pinterest?

It used to be such a great source of inspiration for home interiors but now the majority of images I find are AI. At first glance everything looks lovely, then the closer you look you see how impractible the designs/ideas are, along with the telltale smoothness and glow of the generated images.

Image attached is an example - so the water from the shower is just meant to pool on the floor between the bath and the fixed screen?

AIBU to say it's ruined the user experience as most time is spent trying to find real life spaces and designs that actually work!

I agree, I’ve been trying to get inspiration for my kitchen renovation and Pinterest has been useless with all the AI images.

In the end I started looking up houses for sale similar to mine on Zoopla, and looked at how they have designed their kitchens for layout ideas (or what not to do!).

I also follow House & Garden as their articles are based on real people’s houses.

However, if you are bored, it’s sometimes fun with the kids to play ‘spot the weird stuff in AI images’ on Pinterest.
All those lovely rooms that have light fittings suspended mid-air, and 3 legged chairs, mismatched cupboard handles, and sinks with no taps, and cupboards with oven controls, or even an oven under a sink …. and oh so many hanging plants…. and often a big window with a beautiful forest just outside 😂

I do this too, although I use Rightmove for inspiration. Same as everyone else, I used to love Pinterest but it’s just very bland now.

I agree, but do think there has been something not quite right about Pinterest down the years and that AI is just the final straw.

I've been on Pinterest for a longer time than FB, Insta, X etc. but never got the app. It's been so long - in fact - that it's via my old Outlook email and all it's communications are now sent into spam by Outlook.

Yep complete shite!

mathanxiety · 12/08/2025 00:28

I agree about the interiors. A lot of the garden shots are AI BS now too.

I've been going through my boards and culling any AI images I mistakenly pinned.

Cherryicecreamx · 12/08/2025 00:28

Yes I find it really annoying! Trying to get some home inspiration and it's full of AI. Something just doesn't look right about it.

I haven't used Pinterest much, lately, but I do watch a fair bit on YouTube and I don't know that I've seen anything overtly AI that wasn't a video about AI. I follow a watercolor artist who has said that she's seen a video that purported to show someone painting, but the effect achieved was clearly impossible and therefore AI-generated. She didn't provide a link, presumably because she didn't want to encourage or reward it, but I'm just curious what it actually looks like. None of the searches I've tried return anything useful. (Just videos of people talking about AI, not AI masquerading as original content.)

Can anyone post a link to an AI video on YouTube they've found in the wild? Any subject?

Where I have been seeing more and more AI is the results of image searches. So much of it is instantly recognisable as AI. I do wonder what will happen when it's no longer possible to immediately tell the difference.

Not whole videos of AI pretending to be something like a vlog or a video essay per se, but I listen to a lot of music playlists on YT and a lot of it is AI music now, especially lo-fi and such, with AI images to go with it. Even vintage music playlists will now have obviously AI images instead of original vintage pictures. Many times I've seen shorts about things like history use AI images instead of historical photos. I find it very lazy & off-putting, personally.

Do you get clients who have unrealistic expectations caused by AI images? I vaguely remember seeing a guy getting upset online because his builder said absolutely no way to tiling the ceiling of his shower enclosure like the image he'd seen.

Thats a very interesting question.
mainly, the unrealistic expecations clients have is because they have no idea of the true cost of materials and labour.

Pinterest and the like, gives this expectation to client of they want and when I tell them how much it would cost some of them understand and we look at creative ways to achieve what they want in their budget (or they need to increase it) and some think I or others of my peers are taking the piss.

i often say a good architect/interior architect/designer can save you a lot of money in the lifetime of your project as you can avoid costly mistakes. But a not so good one or bad one is as bad and as expensive as a bad private school.

i see my job as a translator (and a bit of witchcraft!), so I dont mind unrealistic expectations. I listen to my clients, get their inspo pictures, then I translate their dreams into a realistic vision. Thats one of my favourite part.

as for builders, most of the time i find that some builders dont want to learn new skills. If they are honest about it, good on them. They have enough business. What i dont like is when they tell me it cant be done.
i like pushing boundaries and being problem solving that my favourite part, so dont tell
me it csnt be done because i ll find a way.
yes of course, there will be a cost to it. Luckily, my black book team are most of them boundary breakers.

and yes tiled ceiling CAN be done but it aint easy and cheap.

It’s the same with gardening sadly. This hosta is available on Amazon and people are buying them …

I agree, I've been looking for some inspiration to decorate our new cottage, my friend suggested using chatGPT 🙄 I know it has it's uses but I want real life spaces.

Stick to the magazines. I am an addict for home interior magazines and at least with many you can see the human person in their space so you know it's (probably, mostly) real.

And I agree that AI is ruining so many things. It can give you a 'general idea' but on the specifics it's useless. Although re the rainfall shower thing, I've seen some pretty impractical 'real life' bathrooms in some of the posher interiors mags; baths in front of a huge window with no indication of which window treatment to use to prevent all and sundry seeing your - well, all and sundry. And free standing baths in corners where it's going to be IMPOSSIBLE to get into the nooks and crannies between the bath and the wall and you can only imagine the grime and water damage that's going to be hidden down there.

I'm predicting a lot of false or misleading information courtesy of AI, those "authors" out for a quick buck could end up being sued surely?

They’re AI so not authors -possibly Chinese or anywhere really

SnackAckerTack · 12/08/2025 13:03

I've never liked Pinterest, I find it very annoying, and full of crappy adverts, and never actually shows you want you want to see. I'll be happy when it dies a death

HauntedBungalow · 12/08/2025 13:05

AI means the internet has even more shit on it than previously. Soon the entire thing will be useless.

reversegear · 12/08/2025 23:05

Maybe we will see the rise of magazines, I have started buying them recently and have gone right off Pinterest which I’ve been on forever, I hadn’t clocked why it was annoying me and now it’s obvious it’s the AI, I’m renovating a cottage and just going to Google home shows to go in person as well, if anyone knows any!

I feel there will be a shift back to events and magazines potentially.

Just a ramble but my DS who are 18 & 21 laugh and mock AI and think it’s a pile of crap, clearly that’s the opinion of just my own but I do wonder what the 20-30 year olds think?

YelloDaisy · 13/08/2025 11:17

Someone I know accidentally had a conversation via AI on her phone on whatsapp - thought she'd been given an appointment with her trainer but AI was answering the questions. Gave her a day and a time - the trainer was on holiday.
