to think my colleague should just admit she is on weight loss injections?

At work we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight in the past few months. She is always talking about diets and what she eats and does not eat anymore and makes a big deal about avoiding the biscuit tin in the kitchen. She keeps saying it is just willpower and cutting out snacks.

Last week I walked past her desk, her bag was open, and there was one of those weight loss injection pens in plain sight.

Now I cannot unsee it and every time she goes on about her self control it feels performative.

I am not saying she has to announce it to the whole office, but when she is preaching about anyone can do it if they just try it feels a bit dishonest.

AIBU to think she should either be upfront or just stop making a song and dance about how she has done it all naturally?

No, but if the smoker was going around telling everyone they’d gone cold turkey and not needed any assistance it would be disingenuous.

No one needs to share anything they don’t want to but pretending it’s all due ONLY to dietary changes and willpower is strange.

I’m ok with people knowing I’m on the jabs. If I wasn’t I’d take them, keep my mouth shut and say I’ve been trying to lose weight if asked but not offer any information or thought on how easy it is and that ‘anyone can do it’

Is she saying "I don't use WLIs"?
(I mean she can if she wants, I am pretty open about using them but can see why people aren't telling you

or

is she just not mentioning that aspect and talking about the other aspects of her plan?

I have seen her having snacks quite a few times. She tells other people off for having snacks though.

That would really annoy me.

I'd ask her what gave her the impression that you wanted her advice or opinion, and tell her it was extremely rude to make assumptions that other people want to lose weight.

See @Scarlettpixie post

Still no need for anyone to carry it around with them though. Taking it isn’t time critical.

Made up. You need to medically keep the pen in the fridge.

No you don’t.

betnet · 11/08/2025 18:21

This is what I don't get. She keeps going on about weight loss and diets all the time whereas most people would just keep it quiet.

Does any actual work get done in your workplace?

m00rfarm · 11/08/2025 18:27

Interesting that you know to recognise a pen from a quick look in her bag. I had no idea what they looked like until I researched it.

WearyAuldWumman · 11/08/2025 18:27

It's taken me around two years to lose two stone and to build up some muscle.

Twenty years ago, I lost more than 4 stones over a 3/4 yr period doing the same as I'm doing now - cutting calories and going to the gym. My experience is that each time no one really noticed the weight loss until I got to around the two stone mark; in fact, the last time round it wasn't until I'd lost about three stones. I'm managing more gym visits this time round and that's definitely made a difference.

I'm sure that some people might scoff that I've been overweight for most of my adult life. (I'm 65.) There are certainly some people who seem to think that I've suddenly lost excess fat.

In actual fact, now that I've gone down from a large size 22 to an 18 with a fat stomach, I'm finding it slightly easier to find clothes which fit instead of having to wear tents all the time, so the weight loss looks more than it actually is. My arms were never as fat as the rest of me, but I had them covered up because they looked so awful - I'd lost a lot of muscle for various reasons, but have now built it back up again.

Why has it taken me so long to get back on track after losing and then regaining the weight in my 40s? Quite simply, I was working full time and caring/advocating for my parents and then my late husband. It simply wasn't possible for me to get back to the gym, my single best motivator for getting fit and keeping to my calorie deficit. I also had to have bits of surgery, including a shoulder decompression.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 11/08/2025 18:25

No you don’t.

Well, you do until you start using it. And why would someone bring it into the office for a once a week injection?

SkylarFalls · 11/08/2025 18:27

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 11/08/2025 18:17

This. If it really was a WLI pen then she would almost certainly be keeping it in her bathroom at home. There's no reason for her to have it in her bag. I suspect the OP is not giving the correct picture

This

Diabetic pens need to be taken at certain times of the day

WLIs are weekly, and you don't even have to take them the exact same day, if you miss it on day 7 you can take it on day 8 instead. There's zero reason to bring one to work.

I don't even take them on holiday! There's no need. If the trip is longer than a week I can skip a week

I have never taken my pens out of my fridge after recieving them except to use them in my kitchen

Why does it even matter? 😂 why are people obsessed over it being in her bag? Maybe she’s going to her mums after work but always does her jab at 7pm so will do it there? Who bloody cares?

You have to look pretty closely because they're not the only meds in those kindsa pens!

BrendaSmall · 11/08/2025 18:30

They only have to be kept in the fridge until you first use them then it can be kept anywhere!
mines in my cabinet beside my bed!!
Only myself and my husband knows I’m using it, it’s nothing to do with anyone else how I’m losing weight!!

Because it sounds like bullshit to be honest. Just (another) excuse for people to bash those using WLI.

TragicMuse · 11/08/2025 18:31

So what? Why do you think it matters? Regardless of what she says or does, it literally doesn’t matter. Nothing she says or does has any actual bearing on your life.

I’d find something else to obsess over, maybe something that actually is your business.

Why would she take it anywhere? That's why people are obsessing over it - it is entirely possibly it was NOT a WLI that the OP saw in the bag. The whole thing is a made up story to get people talking.

It's not daily

It's not time dependant. Am last week, pm this week, doesn't matter

It's not even particularly day dependant.
If you took it on Tuesday last week you can take it tues, weds or Thurs this week.

And they expire quicker out of the fridge and why waste them?

TheGoodOnesAreAllGone · 11/08/2025 18:31

Do you expect all of your colleagues to disclose their medication to the whole office or just the fat one who's losing weight?
You do realise weight loss medication doesn't just conveniently dispose of any calories and fat you consume?! You still have to eat well and exercise, it just dulls the 'food noise' and reduces appetite so you're not constantly thinking about food.

Would you judge someone with adhd for taking medication to help them focus as they haven't done it 'naturally'?

I expect your colleague feels she needs to explain her weight loss and isn't comfortable with anyone knowing she's on medication (if she even is). There is a lot of judgment around it so people are often selective over who they confide in

I know, thanks. I’m on it myself 🙄 many do take them at a specific day and time.

Ah maybe it’s in her bag as she doesn’t want anyone at home to find it? Partner/kids/whoever she lives with

Yeah, if you do a degree whilst on ADHD meds or antidepressants, the pills get up at night time and write your dissertation for you like a scene from Cinderella!

Pessismistic · 11/08/2025 18:35

Just say to her sally it’s great you have such will power and it’s obviously working for you but I am a grown up and I decide what I eat so if you don’t mind I don’t need you nagging just because you’re doing it doesn’t mean everyone else should be following you. I’m quite capable of choosing if I want to diet or not. Hopefully that will shut her up.

It's the same with WLIs

The fluid is filled with a TEENY army armed with laser guns that zap and time travel your fat to an ice planet far away in a different time line.

You don't need to do anything else.

You just go to sleep fat and wake up skinny.

It CAN get a bit tricky when the devil comes to cash in on you selling your soul but with a bit of insider trading, it's manageable with minimal effort

Louiestopit · 11/08/2025 18:13

Does it matter?

I’ve lost 16 stone over the last 4 years, 3 and a half of that this year. I’ve been “confronted” so many time this year about weight loss injections. No matter what I say, there are a couple of people so angry at me, wanting me to admit it. One person stopped speaking to me over my “lies.” I’m sure there are more people convinced I am on it and lying.

I’m not on them. I just stopped eating anything processed and I don’t eat sugar or fake sugar. I was 27 stone and killing my self and I decided one day that I didn’t want to be that way anymore. It’s a very boring story. That’s it. My only “secret” is that I was diagnosed with celiac, so that cut out a huge swathe of crap (McDonalds and Greggs, my old loves 😭), and the rest was easy.

But when I tell people that, they won’t accept it.

Edited

Congratulations. Thats a huge weight loss and you should be proud (however you did it).

But others shouldn’t be deciding how you did it and disbelieving you. Flowers

lunar1 · 11/08/2025 18:38

You do know you still have to diet? You sound like a bit of a creep to be honest, watching her food and looking in her bag (at the very expensive injection than has to live in the fridge)

Norfolklass2428 · 11/08/2025 18:39

None of your business OP.

i have lost a significant amount of weight through having weight loss surgery. My colleagues ask if I have lost weight - I say something generic and shut it down.

My colleagues are just that, they are not friends or family and I am not close enough to them to want them knowing about my difficult weight loss journey.

i am also diabetic and carry my insulin pen and an epi- pen. I would be mortified if I thought colleagues were nosing into my bag and wrongly guessing about how I am losing weight and discussing it.
