to think my colleague should just admit she is on weight loss injections?

At work we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight in the past few months. She is always talking about diets and what she eats and does not eat anymore and makes a big deal about avoiding the biscuit tin in the kitchen. She keeps saying it is just willpower and cutting out snacks.

Last week I walked past her desk, her bag was open, and there was one of those weight loss injection pens in plain sight.

Now I cannot unsee it and every time she goes on about her self control it feels performative.

I am not saying she has to announce it to the whole office, but when she is preaching about anyone can do it if they just try it feels a bit dishonest.

AIBU to think she should either be upfront or just stop making a song and dance about how she has done it all naturally?

Your colleague sounds a diet bore.

Having said that - I lost 9st last year without injections/pills/surgery and so many people accused me to my face of being on jabs. It was extremely disheartening.

Our family had a big trauma around Xmas time and I regained 21lb and struggled to stay on track. A family member then offered to pay for WLI to help me back on track and I ended up deciding that since everyone had made their mind up that im on WL injections anyway that I may as well just do it. Ive now lost what I had regained plus another stone so I'm at 10st lost and I've got 6 more to go.

I do wish people would just mind their own bloody business though. I worked so flipping hard to lose that weight. I'm still working hard on the injections but I don't have to concentrate quite as much and i don't have to make weight loss the sole focus of my life any more.

It sounds unlikely that the injection you saw was a WLI, as most people keep them in the fridge and it is only once per week so there would be no need for it to be in her bag at work.

It was a WLI. I have friends who are on it openly.

She might be hiding it from her family at home. - there are lots of valid reasons why she keeps it with her.

Not everyone keeps it in the fridge.

You're going to find her irritating whether she's on weight loss medication or not. Maybe address what's actually annoying you with her and ask her to stop commenting on your food

This is true actually.

Is it normal to bring up dieting, food and exercise 5 days a week several times a day?

Maybe that is normal to you. It is not to me. I don't want to be told I should not be having a snack. Again this is normal for you?

It sounds like this woman is really tedious to be honest. It's fine and pretty normal to talk about weight loss at work and indeed to share tips with people if they express an interest. It isn't fine or normal to make unsolicited critical comments about other people's eating habits or to go on and on about the topic to the point of obsession. So in a way it doesn't matter whether she's on a weight loss drug or not - she sounds pretty insuffersble so we are just quibbling about whether she does or does not have a layer of dishonesty to add to her annoyingness!

But as for whether she is taking anything... I agree with others that it doesn't sound likely that you saw what you think you saw based on the information given, and that even if you did, it would be cruel to comment. It's something with a lot of secrecy and shame surrounding it for many people. It also doesn't guarantee weight loss so will power and effort still have their role to play if she is taking something.

If you want to be more assertive with her and explain your boundaries to her, saying something like 'I appreciate weight loss matters to you and I'm happy for you, but it's really not a topic I want to hear about personally and I'd appreciate your not commenting on my food again' would be a better road.

I just think it’s because I’m not the massive one anymore.

I keep being gleefully told I will pile it all back on too, once I’ve finished my “diet.” I’m not on a diet. This is just how I eat now. I just woke up one day, had enough and changed my life (I might have sat on a wall hung toilet at ikea and almost pulled it off the wall 😅). People don’t believe you can just change over night.

Edited

They’re jealous of how you got your shit together and made a change.

Who gives a toss what they think. What you’ve done is AMAZING and no fucker should be pulling you down.

MrsSunshine2b · 11/08/2025 19:40

MrsPerfect12 · 11/08/2025 19:03

And it’s completely clear why she won’t confide in you.

Oh please don't mistake me, we are not friends but unfortunately for both of us are obligated to stay loosely in touch. If my friends were on WLIs they'd just say it, not go about pretending that they'd suddenly and miraculously reformed their characters. But then they don't subscribe to the notion that overweight is a personality flaw to begin with so there would not need to be any shame in it.

I haven't called her out and haven't told anybody.

Except everyone on a forum. How unpleasant.

That is what I am supposedly jealous of?

I have no idea what you’re jealous of, or indeed if you are jealous. I wasn’t the one who said it.

She obviously chucked her sharps bin in her bag too!

Well quite! A pen, a needle, an alcohol wipe and a sharps bin seems quite onerous to carry round with her.

I am on WLIs and I cannot tell a WLI pen from another drug that uses the same kind of pens without getting very close and having a read of the drug label, possibly rotating the pen so that the drug info is at the top

Was your whole nose inside her bag?

It's not something I could identify at a mere glace, and I'm on em!

If you were that close, what dose was she on out of interest?

It is hard to have compassion for someone who tells me off for having snacks while she has them herself.

I've lost nearly 5 stone since November by changing my diet.

No jabs.

No exercise (due to ill health)

Maybe that's what your colleague did???? But no matter how she it, it's good news.

No my whole nose was not in her bag. But I don't walk around with a blindfold on either.

Do you go around lecturing others about how they need to adopt your habits and lose weight too?

bluecurtains14 · 11/08/2025 19:50

She could be on it for diabetes, and they still should be kept in the fridge once opened - why would she carry around a very expensive thing that she only needs to use once a week?

In use insulin is actually best used at room temperature. The not in use pens are kept in the fridge.

Although in this weather both are probably better off in the fridge it might be tipping out of safe range for either at room temperature

Poppinjay · 11/08/2025 19:54

She sounds most unpleasant to be around.

Could you just start asking her to stop talking about what others eat. She has no idea what eating issues or even disorders her colleagues could be experiencing. Protecting colleagues from this behaviour would be my biggest concern.

Could you take her on one side and explain that you don't give a hoot how she is losing the weight but you are concerned about the effect of her comments on others and please could she stop?

Plenty of people have already answered the fridge issue.

She might be hiding it from her family at home. She has mentioned they give her a hard time about her weight.

I do find it odd how losing weight seems to mean your lifestyle becomes everyone else’s business to comment on!

Whether she is on WLI or not, it’s her medical information to share as she wishes.

I have lost weight, not using injections (not that it really matters) and I hate people mentioning it! It makes me uncomfortable to talk about it because it feels quite personal and I’ve had people ask what I am taking to lost weight which is even more personal.

I think generally we should all just mind our own business and avoid mentioning weight changes unless the person themselves brings it up.

She owes you nothing by way of explaining her weight loss and all the more so just so you can have a gotcha or I knew you were moment.

You need to keep yourself busier at work and get over yourself.

This and
"we have all noticed Sally has lost a lot of weight"

You are all making her feel like she has to explain it.

Are you prepared to divulge your personal medical details to her and to the rest of the office?

TY78910 · 11/08/2025 20:05

Crunchymum · 11/08/2025 17:36

Sure thing.

People bring their (expensive and more often than not refrigerated) weightloss pens to work and also happen to leave it in plain sight of the OP.

Absolutely did not happen.

Once you’ve used your mounjaro pen it does not have to be in the fridge for up to 30 days.

OP, I agree with PPs that being on WLI is nobody’s business and doesn’t need to be ‘admitted’ to. You do also need to be on a healthier diet with WLI, they don’t automatically make you lose weight.

I do however get your point about someone going round holier than thou telling people that they should be eating better, and judging their choice of crisps over celery sticks being much, whether she was on WLI or not.

Piccolomaforte · 11/08/2025 20:05

I’m with you, OP. People have a right to lose weight however they like, but it irritates me that at least three people I know well are very clearly not being open about how they’re losing quite so much weight and pretending it’s suddenly down to diet and exercise - despite having tried this numerous times.
I saw them in one friend’s fridge and didn’t say anything, despite the fact when other friends arrived, she completely denied it and said she has just been ‘restricting portions’. Why lie? Good on you for doing it either way, but be honest.
