Just that really - screen shot below.

mini skirts , cherries, twirling hair ?

am I a prude or are these just evidence of sexualisation of young women?

THAT Britney Speers video would be banned now.

The 00s was as icky as the 70s.

Clubs used to do school uniform
nights which no doubt attracted the pervs.

Glad we don’t see those any more.

Good points. Yet we keep getting people on here, minimising it, "it's just teenagers, it's just the way they dress, the way they are etc" . I think this advertising campaign is very concerning.

I’m usually accused of being OTT about feminism but I think people are being OTT about this ad.

This summer is full of fruit motifs, it’s everywhere, for adult women as well. Strawberries, cherries, watermelon. Some examples I’ve seen shopping today attached.

I think the fruit is only one part of the argument.

nomas · 13/08/2025 18:30

Cherries and strawberries are everywhere because they’re red and cute.

What is the rest of the argument? The girls are not in provocative poses at all.

TheKeatingFive · 13/08/2025 18:42

The photos aren't too bad, but the cherries are a totally unacceptable addition

People are arguing that they are. Many points have been made about this.

It's not a cherry print though. It's a cherry image superimposed on some (mildly suggestive) pics

You can’t have cherry print on uniform, but there will be lots of young teen girls sticking motifs of hearts, cherries, strawberries on their books and pencil cases.

Why choose a cherry though? When there's a specific connection with young girls losing their virginity. And absolutely nothing to do with back to school

The other image was a bow. Makes much more sense as it links to hairstyle. There are a million alternative images they could have chosen.

Because cherries and bows are in fashion at the moment. New Look are probably cross promoting, they are selling loads of the stuff.

They know the connotations with cherries, why choose it when there were so many alternatives? They'll be loads of other things in fashion that they have on accessories if they wa t ti cross sell.

There would be a connotation if there was a pun about breaking a cherry or something gross like that. On their own, they’re just a fruit.

I wore my cherry earring tops the other day and I did not have anything sexual in mind. They’re just a cute fruit that is in fashion.

But this is not cherries on a piece of jewellery.

This is a generic cherry image, superimposed on slightly suggestive pics of schoolgirls, serving no discernible purpose.

What is suggestive about the poses? I don’t think they are.

It's not cross promotional with anything in particular. It's a generic image.

There were so many other options. Strawberries, watermelon, hearts, yadda, yadda.

Fine, you don't see it, but it's not going ti take much for people to get to 'pop your cherry' and there's just zero need for New Look to go there. Why do that? It's not even adding anything compositionally.

I think the image on the left is suggestive, with the hair twirling and the slightly open mouth. Not the other two.

cosimarama · 13/08/2025 20:55

It’s not about one thing in isolation it’s the mix of the main twirly hair image with the other - mouth agape looking down at the camera in a fashion mag model style - along with the pair looking like air stewards in tight stylized outfits and impractical bags. All with loads of make up. Then slapping tacky emojis on top.

School uniform shots are often barefaced kids smiling with a focus on the practical clothes - not their faces and poses - for good reason. There’s every other fashion range they could have older teen girls modelling for, school should be a safe place for girls, not being pushed by retailers as a place they should look a certain way, they have enough of that. Not a step in the right direction for girls.

ThePoliteLion · 13/08/2025 21:37

They are cringe and yuck. Now I’m curious enough to check out who does their marketing. I won’t be going in that shop again

ThePoliteLion · 13/08/2025 21:47

The current head of brand and marketing at New Look was at Boden for two years. Weird.

tellmesomethingtrue · 13/08/2025 22:30

Cherries: sex

Mouths open: sex

Hair twirling: sex

Leaning to show hip: sex

short skirt: sex

totally inappropriate.

tellmesomethingtrue · 13/08/2025 22:41

Here are some NORMAL school uniforms on normal children. (pic from wikipedia). Do you see the difference?!?

I’ll leave you to be the expert on cherry connotations since you’ve done so many of them.

I suspect there are more than a few nonce's in the clothes picking departments for quite a few big name stores.

Dd prefers a gothic house on the prairie look, thank God. We often go straight to the boys section for clothes as she detests the tight rags that somehow manage to both infantalise and sexualise young girls.

That sounds brilliant! Laura Ingalls Wilder (who wrote the Little House books) got married in a black dress. 😁🖤 I've just finished reading 'These Happy Golden Years' by said author. 😊
