Supply Teacher giggling at name of child in class

Is it very unprofessional for a supply teacher to start giggling when taking the register in a class which they have not taught in before, because one of the children's names is "Bourbon"? Supply teacher in question is normally very professional but couldn't help themselves when hearing the name of the child.

Oh how I miss the laugh reaction!

Far worse to call a child Bourbon really, the parent must know that it's going to raise eyebrows through the child's life.

Hopefully the child was named after the biscuit and not the chinniest of chinny Royal families...

😄

I mean, it’s not my favourite name, but to find it that amusing you’d have to think it was a biscuit rather than a Franco-Spanish royal house. I mean, it’s no odder than using Windsor or Tudor as a first name.

It’s also name of an American whiskey 🥃

Biscuit or whiskey name would be more popular in certain parts of world including UK than Franco Spanish royal house.

What are people going on about biscuits for? Where did that come from? Bourbon is a alcoholic drink, and 99.99999% of people would assume their parent are pissheads or at least partial to bottles of bourbon.

User28473 · 10/08/2025 00:45

Unprofessional if children are present, but it is just as unprofessional to say what the name is on a very public forum.

Is this the child?

?? I think you mean this:

Wasn't there a How I Met Your Mother episode like this? Ted saw the name Cook Pu on the class list and thought someone added it for a stupid joke, starts calling the class out for it and this student's getting really upset because it's actually her name. Then the name's called out to collect a takeaway and Ted thinks Barney's winding him up, so starts having a go at him about it and the same student's right there.

It's your choice whether to laugh at the name or not all the same.

I'm not really sure what's so funny, personally, or why grown adults would think laughing at a child's name was unavoidable.

Edited

No one has said its unavoidable, several people have acknowledged the teacher lacked professionalism, but equally, giggle out of surprise is a natural reaction and happens to the best of us.

Dad used to teach a Tia Maria. She was a twin, the twin had a name with no drinks connotations but that didn't stop the Tia Maria and Vodka jokes in the staffroom.

You're not, I take it, British...

Even if I'm not British Bourbon is an international and famous drink, much like coke, and it is the first thing anyone would think of. Not an obscure biscuit.

Yep, unprofessional if done in front of the child.

However I was once reduced to such a state of uncontrollable hysteria that I had to step outside to calm down, by meeting “Mr Gollum” (I was on a night shift and very sleep deprived, and once I started giggling I just couldn’t stop myself).

Tolkien got a letter from an S Gamgee once and sent him some free books, but said he hoped he'd never get one from S Gollum Grin

I knew a girl called Tia Maria, she had a lot of siblings - and they all had really ordinary plain names

seaelephant · 10/08/2025 01:05

it's a whisky business being a teacher these days!

PeonyBulb · 10/08/2025 01:05

Bourbon Grin

Any normal person would giggle

"An obscure biscuit" 😆

If you were British, you'd realise that far more Brits would think of the biscuit first than the American drink.

Bourbons are a cultural icon. And Brits have an incredible variety of w(h)iskeys when it comes to the drink.

It's a bit unprofessional but honestly, that is one of the worst names I have ever heard so can see why s/he slipped up.

You can see why a grown adult laughed at a child? Come on, adults shouldn’t be bullies. There are loads of strange names, adults should be able to control when they physically laugh, I mean, it’s not that funny.

OonaStubbs · 10/08/2025 01:28

There really should be a restriction on what names parents can give children. Some countries have this with an official list of names that parents have to choose from. It is ridiculous to name a child after a biscuit.

Alwaysalert · 10/08/2025 01:50

ElfAndSafetyBored

But why name a kid after a biscuit?

Or an alcoholic drink?
