Calling all cheese lovers... abomination??

Hi everyone.

DD is in bed and I'm sat on the sofa currently scoffing a bowl of sketty hoops and grade 6 cheddar cheese. Ya know the one. Strong, gritty, salty.

it reminded me of a conversation I had with my best friend a few weeks ago. She has rather, how can I put it, juvenile taste buds. A slim suggestion of Edam and she would cower.
she cooks from scratch, as do I. She buys grade 1, occasionally pushing that boat right out, grade 2.

what in the finest pardon is that? I always assumed the pussy cheeses mild cheeses were for kids. Until I had my own child who will take chunks out of my black bomber. I cannot imagine making a béchamel for my lasagne with, effectively, milk?

AIBU? Are you a mild cheeses eater who buys the grade 1 or 2?

I fucking love cheese and I guessed a lot of mumsnetters do so thought I'd start a thread.

I love a strong cheese (but don't put cheese in my lasagne bechamel btw). One of my (adult) kids likes mild cheese.
It's all personal taste, surely. I say I love cheese but actually I can't bear blue cheese, for example. Presumably someone else would be aghast at that?

Shoxfordian · 08/08/2025 20:33

I love all cheese, and just leaving a lovely cheese and charcuterie board here which I enjoyed earlier with dh

I love strong Cheddar and think the mild stuff tastes like plastic. However traditionally béchamel doesn't actually have cheese in it.

Littleredgoat · 08/08/2025 20:34

I'd have a strong cheese if I'm eating it in its own. Id use a mild for beans on toast. Just depends.

Panterusblackish · 08/08/2025 20:34

I had a few crackers a bit of comte, some doux de montagne and a bit of truffle brie for my dinner.

Big cheese fan.

Mild cheddar is absolutely an abomination. My mother always bought that or plastic cheese slices.

It's no wonder I have cheese issues now is it OP? I'm making up for lost time.

beachwalkx · 08/08/2025 20:35

If it doesn’t crunch with salt crystals, I’m not interested !

I make béchamel with Parmesan and layer the lasagne with Parmesan and mozzarella

Dingledongledell · 08/08/2025 20:35

Strong cheese is for old people who’s taste buds have gone, surely?

IMissSparkling · 08/08/2025 20:37

It's at least 4 or nothing for me when it comes to Cheddar.

Nonsense.

Fat is flavour!

I live near a cheese factory that has an on site restaurant. They do an all you can eat cheese buffet. Cheese coma is real!

Tattletail · 08/08/2025 20:42

I love a babybel

Sortalike · 08/08/2025 20:43

I have educated my child from birth on the wonderful thing that is cheese.

There's always an array of cheese in this house, however because DD got fed up of comments about stinky cheese cubes, she now takes a babybel in her pack up (and lets be honest, we all like a babybel or laughing cow from time to time)

fatgirlswims · 08/08/2025 20:43

Ooh some nice cheeses are a 1 or 2 - some St Andre or vignotte or a nice emental

Favourite is epoisses and other washed rind

all mild cheddar should be banned unless 3 preferable 4

however all goats cheese is vile

FOJN · 08/08/2025 20:44

I have preferences but I've never met a cheese I didn't like. The stronger the better when it comes to cheddar.

What ??? Where ???

Dilbertian · 08/08/2025 20:53

Mmmm cheese 😋

Costco do a good mild cheddar (the big blue brick) that is not like eating tasteless paste.

Goat is gorgeous, and blue is brilliant, but adulterating cheese with cranberries or Marmite is blasphemy. And I like Marmite.

Tattletail · 08/08/2025 20:42

@TattletailHave you ever had the big babybels
they sell in France? Somehow even more delicious than normal babybels!

gingercat02 · 08/08/2025 20:55

The cheesier and the stronger the better in our house. DS was raised on extra mature cheddar. I don't understand babies and crap cheese.
Blue, rinded, aged parmesan, bring it to me.
However no cheese in bechamel OP, cheese sauce yes for cauliflower cheese or macaroni cheese

DinoLil · 08/08/2025 20:56

Everyone, move out of my way!! I'm here for the proper, crunchy Cheddar and any other strong cheese you want to throw my way!

Move aside folks, move aside. Coming through...

MissBridgetJones · 08/08/2025 20:57

I have found my people! Cheese is life!

Except smoked cheese - utter filth Smile

ScottChegg · 08/08/2025 20:59

I love a strong cheese, not so keen on most milder ones. Except Jarlsberg, which I like. If you're approaching menopause, it's good for staving off osteoporosis, btw.
