Calling all cheese lovers... abomination??

Hi everyone.

DD is in bed and I'm sat on the sofa currently scoffing a bowl of sketty hoops and grade 6 cheddar cheese. Ya know the one. Strong, gritty, salty.

it reminded me of a conversation I had with my best friend a few weeks ago. She has rather, how can I put it, juvenile taste buds. A slim suggestion of Edam and she would cower.
she cooks from scratch, as do I. She buys grade 1, occasionally pushing that boat right out, grade 2.

what in the finest pardon is that? I always assumed the pussy cheeses mild cheeses were for kids. Until I had my own child who will take chunks out of my black bomber. I cannot imagine making a béchamel for my lasagne with, effectively, milk?

AIBU? Are you a mild cheeses eater who buys the grade 1 or 2?

I fucking love cheese and I guessed a lot of mumsnetters do so thought I'd start a thread.

@Blueuggboots I did try it and it was delicious. I have just been looking at the bottomless sessions on Wednesdays…I may be paying another trip soon! Cheese is just the best.

ObtuseMoose · 09/08/2025 08:35

Of all the things people use to feel superior, cheese has to be the weirdest!

WaltzingWaters · 09/08/2025 08:38

Yea, for cheddar the stronger the better. I don’t understand why anyone would buy mild cheddar which is just like nothing. My 3yo has grown up with extra mature too and wonders what’s gone on when we visit my grandparents who have mild cheddar.

However, whilst I love a Brie, I can’t go too strong with that (like a super strong one in France). And I like a blue cheese sauce, but can’t eat just blue cheese as is. So obviously personal preference for everyone!

Whatshesaid96 · 09/08/2025 08:38

We give most things a try, do avoid wimpy mild cheddar though. I'm not a fan of Stilton and DH has no immune system so can't eat that or any unpasteurised cheese. Our household favourites are goat, camembert and mozzarella. We have a local cheese stall that we've now started visiting and are working through their selections. They have local but also the owner is Dutch so we get a few from around Europe to try.

When I was at school I had a girl crush on a girl called Sally. I hadn’t thought about her for nigh on 40 years, and then just recently she popped up on an old school Facebook page. She is now a cheesemaker in the Yorkshire Dales. 12 year old me knew how to judge character.

Vates · 09/08/2025 09:12

The cheeses I loved as a child were Edam and Danish Blue. Wasn't really keen on cheddar unless it was melted. But I was weird as my favourite sandwich was Danish Blue and tomato ketchup...I still eat them to this day and have Danish Blue in the fridge. My Dad always bought the strongest cheddar he could find.

I like a variety of different strengths and kinds of cheese. Yes, even mild cheddar!

HerewardtheSleepy · 09/08/2025 09:45

I regard Waitrose grade 6 as a minimum.

Anything below that is simply yellow wax.

Biskieboo · 09/08/2025 09:52

Yep mild cheddar is a total waste of time and while some may say it's a matter of taste I disagree - people who would choose anything less than a 4 are deviants and somebody should keep an eye on them.

Mozzerella comes in many guises.

The stuff used on pizzas is low moisture mozzerella so it is grateable.

British pizza "Mozzerella" is to Italian Mozzerella, what Amercian Orange "Cheddar" is to British Cheddar.

Of course. But I've bought pizzas in Italy with grated mozzerella on them.

You get what you pay for works in all countries.

It's an abomination to waste good strong cheese with tinned spaghetti hoops.

Absolutely isn't a waste, although I did query my husband putting Cashel Blue on beans on toast

RunningJo · 09/08/2025 15:24

Fresh bread, salted butter, a good strong cheddar & some nice tomatoes… perfect,
My cheeses are Red Leicester (Red Leicester bite is really nice), a strong - mouth ulcer inducing - cheddar, goats cheese, baked Camembert, and love a nice chunk of Parmesan.

grumpygrape · 09/08/2025 19:00

I’m not keen on too much grittiness but do prefer my cheddar to be fairly strong. We buy Collier’s from Costco.

If a cheese is mild, for me, it still has to have flavour. Over the years we have brought back tonnes (well, lots !) of cheese (and Magret) back from France. Many cheeses will freeze for up to a year perfectly well.

Unfortunately, husband’s health means we can no longer go abroad so the new Dairy and Meat regulations from April won’t affect us. We will still be able to buy some proper French cheeses here but at a cost. Can’t see us buying any more Reblochon for Tartiflette. Yes, I know Tartiflette is ‘only’ cheese and potato bake’ but it really isn’t if it’s made with Reblochon ! You can buy Reblochon over here but at 4 x the price in France.

No more Coulommiers (bigger than Camembert) for baking. Beautiful nutty Comte and Ossau-Iraty, yes, we can get here but at a price…..and I’ve rarely seen, one of my absolute favourites, Cantal in this country. Weeping as I’m typing.

Our British cheeses are great but we don’t have the variety and history they have in France. Oh, and I’m sorry but shoving fruit and other stuff in perfectly good cheeses should be an imprisonable offence. If you want cranberries or pickled onions, have them with, not it, your cheese. I love the Wensleydale Creamery but please stop shoving daft things in your lovely cheeses https://www.wensleydale.co.uk/

I now know what’s for lunch tomorrow. Aldi part-baked Baguettes and baked Coulommiers. Mmmmmmm.

@mrschocolatte- I hear you!! Did you try the goat’s cheese with Turkish delight??! It was amazing. My friend who doesn’t even really like goat’s cheese was brave and loved it. We’re going again in September, on a Wednesday when it’s BOTTOMLESS!!

I am on my hols from Oz and have booked to go there in a few weeks. I can’t wait!😁

I make a white sauce for my lasagne, then top it with grated mozzarella, yum.
Boursin stirred in just cooked pasta, with rocket salad is a favourite and easy dinner.
Love all cheese, posh, naff, the lot. Dairy lea spread on toast with marmite is gorgeous, try it. Tesco deli sells a lovely cheese with chilli in it, great with water biscuits and Lurpack.

stample · 09/08/2025 20:57

mature cheddar here for us. But then I do love a Stilton or Gruyère too. Baked Camembert? No one in household likes the taste or smell mind! Oh well, more for me! Any cheese will do for me, fav is prob goats cheese or black sticks blue! Delish

RedRiverShore5 · 08/08/2025 22:54

Not all cheese has it on, Waitrose own brand and M&S have it on, it's usually on the front of the pack.

Aha thanks for that. I usually shop in Sainsburys, will keep an eye out.

In Sweden.

Please, can you share the name of this magical place? My DH is now desperate to go 😂

Auburngal · 11/08/2025 22:19

i like goats cheese - there are mainly three types - spreadable, with a rind and in a block .

Not keen on Edam - ok with the herbs. Cheese should not be plasticky.

Love spicy food but that Mexicana cheese is awful
