Calling all cheese lovers... abomination??

Hi everyone.

DD is in bed and I'm sat on the sofa currently scoffing a bowl of sketty hoops and grade 6 cheddar cheese. Ya know the one. Strong, gritty, salty.

it reminded me of a conversation I had with my best friend a few weeks ago. She has rather, how can I put it, juvenile taste buds. A slim suggestion of Edam and she would cower.
she cooks from scratch, as do I. She buys grade 1, occasionally pushing that boat right out, grade 2.

what in the finest pardon is that? I always assumed the pussy cheeses mild cheeses were for kids. Until I had my own child who will take chunks out of my black bomber. I cannot imagine making a béchamel for my lasagne with, effectively, milk?

AIBU? Are you a mild cheeses eater who buys the grade 1 or 2?

I fucking love cheese and I guessed a lot of mumsnetters do so thought I'd start a thread.

Crunchy cheddar, Pont-l'Évêque, montrachet, Stilton, camembert, wensleydale for cheese on toast. All the cheese.

I love a strong cheese (but don't put cheese in my lasagne bechamel btw). One of my (adult) kids likes mild cheese.
It's all personal taste, surely. I say I love cheese but actually I can't bear blue cheese, for example. Presumably someone else would be aghast at that?

The one and only time I ate blue cheese, I vomited violently for three days. So I share your aversion.

thecatsneedfeeding · 09/08/2025 00:41

Mild cheddar is fit for 2 things. Grating on top of a pizza or using it to call the cat in. She'll do anything for a bit of cheese.

I'm not a fan of those mixed flavour cheeses like those stripy cheese things you get at Christmas. Neither do I like the cheese with chunks of fruit or nuts in it. After a severe allergic reaction to blue cheese a few years ago that involved ambulances (plural) and A&E I stay well away from blue or mould ripened cheese (the thinking is that there is a potential link with penicillin through a secondary metabolite. I'm severely allergic to penicillin) Any other cheese though is fair game.

For Mother's day this year my kids brought me cheese instead of flowers and chocolates.

Bloody love strong cheese (silton anything!) but a good mozzarella or burrata? Mild but equally delicious. Love ALL cheese plastic, dailylea to epoisses. Only cheese I don’t like is paneer.

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2025 00:52

I figure if it tastes stronger I might use less of it!
@Wonderknicksi don’t use bechamel sauce at all in my lasagna but there’s a layer of strong cheddar a layer of Parmesan and a layer of mozzarella …

Enko · 09/08/2025 00:55

I love cheese both mild and strong. Different flavours. Its all good.

Timeforabitofpeace · 09/08/2025 06:59

“ Scetty hoops?”

LastKnownSurvivor · 09/08/2025 07:04

I have to put in a word for Payson Breton. The texture is lovely, crumbly like Philadelphia used to be in the 1980s before they ruined it by making it 'creamy'.

This would be my idea of entering hell. I absolutely HATE cheese in all its ghastly forms.

I love all cheese, and just leaving a lovely cheese and charcuterie board here which I enjoyed earlier with dh

Nae much cheese!

mrschocolatte · 09/08/2025 07:35

@Blueuggboots I spent a marvellous afternoon at The Cheese Bar. I got to try cheese I would never have looked at twice, with pairings that seemed ridiculous. I mean cheese with fudge…bloody delicious! I also liked the excitement of waiting for the plate you want coming around on the belt hoping no one else snatches it up before you. I need to get out more.

Auburngal · 09/08/2025 07:38

Mild cheddar is a waste of time. I get 4 or above.

Love cheese! Though Stilton has to be blue! None of this white stuff with fruit in. Cheese needs to be savoury!

Though I do wish there were more cheesemongers - shops selling specialty cheese as we have more cheese varieties than France! If visiting somewhere and have a stall of a small dairy selling cheese, I buy some.

Same here! Cheese 🧀
come on we need more cheese emojis

TaborlinTheGreat · 09/08/2025 08:04

I like strong cheese and mild cheese. YABU to call someone else juvenile because of their taste in cheese when you use the word 'sketty'.

Titasaducksarse · 09/08/2025 08:05

I once went away in a group and 1 woman insisted on mild cheddar for the cheeseboard eschewing any of the other cheeses. I knew then she'd never become a close friend lol.
I knew she was a wrong un when she also bought a nasty medium sweet white wine to drink.
She put salt on absolutely everything including houmous so I wonder if she had lots of issues with food and taste.

I have found my people! Cheese is life!

Except smoked cheese - utter filth Smile

Agree

drspouse · 09/08/2025 08:11

Surely cheddar has no place in an Italian dish?
Cheese is personal taste. I've never liked a strong cheddar but blue, goats etc. are heaven. Weeks old brie or camembert. Yum, but not in lasagne.

Blueuggboots · 09/08/2025 08:12

@mrschocolatte- I hear you!! Did you try the goat’s cheese with Turkish delight??! It was amazing. My friend who doesn’t even really like goat’s cheese was brave and loved it. We’re going again in September, on a Wednesday when it’s BOTTOMLESS!!

Clawdy · 09/08/2025 08:19

Davidstow is the best . Always crunchy and salty.

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 09/08/2025 08:28

If cheese were a man, I’d marry it

I’ve found my people!! Except you, @jmsa- we could never be friends 🤣🤣
