to think that DP should not be buying a new BMW 1-series on finance while I have a shitty 10 year old Saxo that falls to bits if you look at it?

IN fact the Vectra is a very good buy as I have just remembered it is going to be replaced.
MY Dh has got one, it's the 1.9l diesel with the 150bph engine so goes like shit on a stick, but still returns 55-60mpg!

YANBU. Of course the BMW salesperson is going to convince him that he can afford the finance deal - that's his job. Your job is to actually spell out what that finance deal means to you and your family's joint finances and lifestyle. Has he actually got a total repayment figure. I'm guessing it will be many £k over the £30k price ticket.

BMW 1 series are really overpriced for what they are and not very good to drive. Sounds like a classic case of image concern to me, that he has to have a BMW. Sad thing is that everyone will just look at it and think 'poor man couldn't afford a real BMW' which is insane given that he'd be practically spending 3-series money on it. If he is that set on getting a BMW 1-series, then could he not look at getting an ex-demonstrator or a 1 year old model. It would still have loads of warranty and be just as economical to run, only much cheaper.

Great result.

Brilliant

See if you can get him to look at a Polo Blue Motion now he's conceded - the current Polo is as big as the Golf used to be, so would be much bigger than the clapped out old Polo he has now, and it's almost the greenest car you can buy

74mpg

DH was looking at a BMW 1 for his next company car because it is very cheap on the income tax levels due to the emissions. He could have got a reasonably specced one for just over 20K but we decided it was too small for a family car. I have a tiny Suzuki Swift (although quite funky with leather seats and low profile alloys etc). So in the end he has opted for an Audi A4.

MIL has got one though even though she does no miles and was saying how much cheaper her tax was going to be than someone else who had some banger in Band G, so I felt compelled to point out that her car would have cost round about 20x more than theirs so she had a lot of ground to make up.

1 series just looks like you can't afford a proper BMW. Bit white socks, slip on shoes and short sleeve shirt with bic biro in the pocket. Tell him that and he should get something else!
