Taking a child scared of dogs into a dog friendly coffee shop

DH and went to a local dog friendly coffee shop this afternoon with our neighbour’s two dogs, a golden retriever and a terrier cross who are staying with us for a few days while their owner is away. At a nearby table there was a father with his little girl of five or six who was obviously very scared of the dogs, who are both sweet natured and were just minding their own business and not wandering about or anything. When we got up to leave the little girl ran away into a corner. I suppose he might have been trying to acclimatise her, but if he was he wasn’t going the right way about it, having a chat with us, asking the dogs’ names etc might have been better. AIBU to think that if you know your child is that scared of dogs,a dog friendly cafe is not the best place to take them?

@YeOldeGreyhound you sound a bit unhinged to be honest. I don’t remember asking you (or your dog) to parent my children at any point!

And look how well that is doing for mankind and the planet.

What are you talking about?

Edited

No, just fucking fed up of people whining about dogs having the audacity to be out in a public place, or a café that they are allowed in.

On here, it is just constant whine whine whine from people who hate dogs, and I am tired of it. The same fucking people on each thread. It is tiring. I think those people need to get a dog as they are proven to help lower blood pressure and help mental health.

And even reduce the risk of dementia. Dogs are brilliant 🤩

Went on holiday to the Lake District recently - dogs EVERYWHERE ! All shops and cafes! Even the Thai and Indian restaurant. Where are you meant to to eat out if you have a child scared of dogs? Or maybe we just shouldn’t holiday in the Lake District (where DH family live).

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT 🚨 - children are more important than your dog.

Edited

POPULAR OPINION ALERT 🚨 The general population is more important than just you! Cafes, pubs and other dog friendly places are dog friendly because they've realised it brings them more trade. You're in the minority. You need to get over it, because you can be sure if you're this anti-dog, that you will be a big part of the reason that your child cannot cope around the most popular type of pet in the country.

Practically every fucking cafe and shop is “dog friendly” these days. Dogs ruin the experience on loads of places - barking at each other because they are so many of them, coming up to strangers and bothering them etc. Even the “good” dogs will just get in the way and they or their leads become a trip hazard.

There is no need for all these dogs to be everywhere and you thinking that just because a cafe is “dog friendly” that means that dogs must take priority there over humans who don’t like dogs is outrageous.

I’m amazed at your entitled attitude, especially as they’re not even your bloody dogs!!

(And were you even there or not? You initially say DH took them, but then you keep saying “us” and “we.”)

It wasn’t that long ago people said the same thing about kids.

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 09/08/2025 23:52

I actually think people’s views very much depend on location.

As I said upthread, I live in Sussex which currently seems to be almost entirely dog-friendly (to the extent I feel really sorry for anyone with allergies or severe dog phobia, as they must have a very limited range of options).

If you live somewhere that is not as dog-friendly, I can completely understand the comments about “just go somewhere else if you don’t like dogs - what’s the problem?”.

I know in my case I’ve completely stopped going to cafes in my local town, as the people who take their dogs don’t seem to have any control over them whatsoever. They seem to think it’s fine for dogs to bark incessantly, to go over to other people, to sit on the furniture - and the staff do nothing (probably because they don’t want to risk confrontation or social media call-outs, which has happened on the local FB pages before). But I was in Brighton the other day, and the dog behaviour was totally different - dogs were generally calm and just lying on the floor / under tables. So again, if you live somewhere that dog (and owner!) behaviour is more like that, I can understand people thinking that complaining about dogs is being intolerant.

What really does need to be addressed is shitty people being antisocial - whether that’s with dogs, phones, kids, whatever…

If a child is terrified of dogs a responsible adult does not take him/her into a dog friendly cafe🤷🏼‍♀️
There are waaay more cafes which don't allow dogs. Go figure.

That is very area dependent

ThatRareHazelTiger · 09/08/2025 23:58

Omg. Your most makes me angry. Bloody dogs ruin public places. They do not take priority over humans. They can be dangerous. Most definitely should not be allowed in places serving/selling food. Very grim.

I want to find a human friendly coffee shop.

That would be one that doesn't let animals in and spoil it for everyone else.

Though I suppose I could adjust and learn to jump up people, bark and rub my shitty arse on the seats.

If your arse is shitty I’d suggest wiping after the lavatory. Maybe try wet wipes if you’ve got a few clinkers 🤣

Are you suggesting children don’t go into coffee shops at all?

Oh grow up. Dogs are NOT allowed in most cafes. And frankly many of us would rather be surrounded by dogs than by entitled kids and their even more entitled parents🤷🏼‍♀️

And if there aren’t any cafes that don’t allow dogs in your local area? Which I appreciate isn’t the case everywhere, but definitely is in my local town.

The father may have been hoping the child would realise that it’s ok to be in a shared space with dogs. Or just trying to get them used to it if there aren’t alternatives.

Incredible isn't it? They're a huge boost to our health in all kinds of ways. No wonder we like having them around! Ddog loves a pub. She thinks it's where her worshippers gather she gets so much fuss 😂

You should really get a dog. Bring your blood pressure right down.

The problem is, people have been convinced (probably by TikTok) that dogs can't be left alone for 5 minutes or you're an irresponsible dog owner, they can't just be taught to play quietly in a secure garden nowadays for some reason, so they think they must take the dog everywhere like it's a newborn baby. So places have to either cater to them or be over a barrel with awkward conversations with deluded people.

This

Onleemoi · 10/08/2025 08:31

Off to a garden centre with mine. Hope to see some of you there.

Taking a dog out is a completely normal activity and has been forever. In my childhood it was far easier to find a dog friendly pub than one that let children in. You go for a walk, grab a coffee and then head home. It's not some crazy internet fad,

Emonade · 10/08/2025 09:29

KimberleyClark · 08/08/2025 20:13

No one else seems to have taken that to mean four dogs….and I did mention later in my OP that 5hey were both sweet natured.

Edited

That’s the funniest arsey comment ever, you clearly were just saying the breed of the two dogs. I also agree it’s mad taking a child who is scared but she might be very keen on dogs but not confident round them
