Mine is Haiti. Such a fascinating place and such an interesting (and predictably oppressed) history. I would so love to go there, but even if things improved there I’d likely still be far too chicken shit, truth be told.

I’d love to travel solo to Kashmir but don’t have the courage.

Me too. Whether things will change, I doubt it, but it’s been in my long list for years.

Well i had been planning to go to Israel in the near future before it all kicked off again.. also, mongolia

I've been to Mongolia. Felt perfectly safe.

Loving this thread and am an avid traveller.

Been to Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Israel, South Africa, Kenya, Mali, India, Cuba, all solo.

Wouldn't go to Russia or North Korea.

Good news about Uzbekistan, would love to go there.

I find myself recently single and have been musing on life and the fact that I haven't travelled much. Have been googling group travel for solo travellers and am drawn to Uzbekistan, well all the stans really. Have read a couple of really interesting books on the Silk Road and would love to see some of those cities.

Also partly because I want to see the expression on my mother's face when I breezily tell her I'm off to Uzbekistan. She's scared of any Abroad other than France.

Mine is also Russia. I'm cross that I've missed my chance.

I'm surprised at some people's choices though. We travelled around the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico last year and it was fine.

Next year we're planning to go to Jordan for a week in April and then Cape Town and the Garden Route in October. Egypt and Cambodia are planned for the year after - assuming no war with Thailand.

The only places I've felt unsafe were in the USA. New Orleans was one. Lots of places have bizarre characters but the thought that they have guns makes me nervous.

I agree with you about the US. Also the quantity of XL Bully dogs and other big dog mixes (people use them as guard dogs) unmuzzled I found really worrying when I was out with my toddler. And the amount of drug addicts. I felt safer in Colombia than the US!

I went to Jordan a couple of years ago and would recommend it in a heartbeat. Such lovely welcoming people and great history.

I'm trying to muster the courage to go to India next year. I'll either love it or hate it, and wouldn't feel safe going alone unfortunately.

Went on a tour to India last year . It was honestly amazing. If you are interested I can send you the details of the company we went with.

I had a Syrian friend when I was at school in the mid 1980s.

I cant believe i turned down the chance to go and stay with them in Damascus one year.

I would have loved to visit Syria when it was in its prime.

I feel that even without the current issues so much has been destroyed that it would be depressing.

London these days!

If you ever get to go, choose St Pete over Moscow. IMHO Moscow is a grey shithole, St Pete is beautiful.

Oh, I disagree about Moscow - how dare you say it's a shithole - I loved it Grin

Iran is getting a few mentions - it's fabulous apart from the ayatollahs!

Australia, because of the fauna....

Israel.

South Africa, although I'm not sure how safe it is.

Why are you afraid of Australian fauna?

BMW6 · 05/08/2025 11:00

I visited the Soviet Union way back in 1987 - stayed in Moscow and Leningrad (flew Aeroflot internally).

Fantastic experience but I bet its like everywhere else now.

I've always wanted to visit Iraq. I tried to get a visa in 2001 but I couldn't. Then it became too dangerous. I'd also love to visit Afghanistan and Iran, but Iraq and its history in the development of modern civilisation has always fascinated me.

These countries for me too. Also Ethiopia for the early Christian churches and Papua New Guinea because the scenery looks stunning.

BadActingParsley · 05/08/2025 11:27

@Noodledog I went to Ethiopia to visit a friend about a decade ago, it was absolutely amazing - the early Christian churches were stunning. Such a huge amount of history that I'd been completely ignorant of (about?). So friendly, and it seemed like a country on the verge of finally embracing tourism and trade and just getting somewhere. New roads being built - which were transformational - new water systems.

Now....it's such a shame.

JHound · 05/08/2025 12:10

LaurieFairyCake · 04/08/2025 22:07

Yeah there’s a whole load of places people have said that are actually safe for tourists because they’re totalitarian states like Saudi/north Korea/china/

still wouldn’t want to go and take part in the charade that it’s all fine, nothing to see here

I don’t want to go anywhere anyone has mentioned apart from maybe Cuba, looks like a great place

I don’t think I would put China in the same category as Saudi or NK.

While China is a “totalitarian state” it does not feel that way particularly. Not sure it felt “safe” just wandering around.

It's not so much i think it's not safe, but far away and so different I guess. Maybe one day

I cannot recommend Kalpak travel highly enough for the Stans. Send them an email...

@Youdontseehow - Moscow has a lot of interesting places and some beautiful parts. But as a PP said, if you ever get to Russia in the future, make sure to include St P which is more obviously stunning. Ekaterinburg is lovely, too.

OneForTheRoadThen · 05/08/2025 13:09

Jordan. Especially Petra

Russia. I’d love to visit St Petersburg.

Believe me it's everything it's cracked up to be, though the opulence the Tsars treated themselves to would have turned even Margeret Thatcher into a communist Grin

Cinnamonx · 05/08/2025 13:38

Redcrayons · 04/08/2025 21:06

India and Russia

India is lovely.

HolidayHattie · 05/08/2025 14:16

Iran, Syria, Yemen, Ethiopia and Kamchatka (where the recent big earthquake was.) I was booked to go to Kamchatka years ago but the trip was cancelled due to insufficient bookings.

RobertaFirmino · 05/08/2025 15:01

Russia. I was writing to a political prisoner there, he'd write back to practise English until he died in jail so I'm worried my name might be on some sort of list.

Don't be ridiculous

London is safe.

Be aware of phone theft but other than that, it's a safe city.
