Mine is Haiti. Such a fascinating place and such an interesting (and predictably oppressed) history. I would so love to go there, but even if things improved there I’d likely still be far too chicken shit, truth be told.

Personally I'd love to visit but am too scared to visit Venezuela, much of the Middle East and much of Africa. I've been to 50+ countries and would like to visit more, but I'm running out of places I haven't been to that I'd like to go to and can go to. Also I'd love to go to Antarctica but what I've heard of the journey there by boat terrifies me.

whiteroseredrose · 05/08/2025 00:50

Mine is also Russia. I'm cross that I've missed my chance.

I'm surprised at some people's choices though. We travelled around the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico last year and it was fine.

Next year we're planning to go to Jordan for a week in April and then Cape Town and the Garden Route in October. Egypt and Cambodia are planned for the year after - assuming no war with Thailand.

The only places I've felt unsafe were in the USA. New Orleans was one. Lots of places have bizarre characters but the thought that they have guns makes me nervous.

Surprised to see Egypt come up so often as a place people are afraid to visit. Currently in Cairo and no issues whatsoever — Cairo, Luxor, Aswan all fine. I believe the Red Sea is too. I adore ancient Egypt and it’s a must-see!

For me, probably India. Purely because I would not feel particularly comfortable as a solo woman going to all the places in India I’d like to visit.

PaxAeterna · 05/08/2025 00:52

Honestly people too nervous of Cuba don’t be. It’s extremely safe. I’m a nervous Nelly about everything but we traveled all over Cuba on public transport and it is safe, friendly and very easy to manage.

Same with Morocco which has a highly developed tourist infrastructure. The only snakes were in Marakesh and I kept a wide berth as would loose my mind if someone put one on me.

I’d love to visit many places in the Middle East. I wouldn’t go near it right now. I would also like to go to New York but I’m too nervous going to the US right now.

I'd love to travel along the African Mediterranean coast, especially to the Algerian city of Oran. Tripoli, too, always looked awesome to me.

For those considering Colombia, please give it a go. It is so beautiful; the Andean cloud forests, and the historic cities of Popayan, San Agustin and Cartagena absolutely blew my mind. Bogota is so much fun. Music! Dancing! Charming men who know how to use their hips! I was in Colombia for a month during the civil war and took sensible precautions, including dressing down. I also carried and read the day's newspaper wherever I went to scramble the signals, i.e. "Er, she looks foreign, but she reads the local paper and might possibly live here ..." Everyone treated me kindly and was patient with my crummy Spanish.

Mine is New Zealand not because of danger, but because I’m scared of the long journey. Same goes for Hawaii.

izzy2076 · 05/08/2025 04:15

I’m here now and it’s fantastic. Really safe. The unsafe areas are the autonomous regions.

India and Russia

India is perfectly safe to travel to. Had some amazing family holidays there and numerous work trips.

suburberphobe · 05/08/2025 04:56

Loving this thread and am an avid traveller.

Been to Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Israel, South Africa, Kenya, Mali, India, Cuba, all solo.

Wouldn't go to Russia or North Korea.

Good news about Uzbekistan, would love to go there.

Fuck me!

I'm stunned at this. When we looked it was about 1500 each for a first class berth for 2 to go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok.

Where is here?

izzy2076 · 05/08/2025 05:46

@MyOtherProfile good point! I thought I’d quoted. Georgia.

Croatia, Albania. I'm too scared of racism to go there

Sorry to hear that, I’ve just got back from a festival in Croatia that’s attended by a very diverse fan base, and absolutely everyone I spoke to said that their experience of Croatian people was they were super friendly and open minded - and they will return. Albania is also ‘up and coming’ for festivals of the same type.
They are beautiful countries, I hope you can go and feel welcomed!

TheChosenTwo · 05/08/2025 06:59

South Africa for me. Looks to be stunningly beautiful but we know of 2 couples who have been and run into trouble, one of them were robbed at gunpoint 😭
It has really put me off and it’s such a shame but it’s all I think about now when I think of SA.

BadActingParsley · 05/08/2025 07:33

Russia, so much history

I went to Russia in 2018 - it was fabulous.
I would love to go back. I'm not "too scared", but I accept that politically it's a no-go right now.

I have been to Haiti but tbh it fairly barron.

I would love to go to Iraq /jordon/

Why can't you go to Jordan? It's a fascinating place.

Mine's a bit daft, but Japan. I know tons of people go there and it's very safe but I am irrationally scared of being in an earthquake and I would be constantly afraid. I went to California a few years ago and I didn't fully relax until I was on the plane home.

We went to Japan last year, apparently there was a small earthquake when we were in Tokyo, only our son woke up, thought “What’s that?” And then went back to sleep. It’s only because he overheard people talking about it at breakfast that he clocked what had happened!

I really want to go to Georgia with my teen son.

Is it safe to go there? It just seems so precariously positioned . . .

My friend's daughter and son in law have just come back from their honeymoon in Georgia. They loved it. Go!

Dery · 05/08/2025 07:52

Studied Russian at uni and lived in St P for a year and absolutely loved it so am really pleased to see all the references to Russia here. I wouldn’t go at the moment but hope it will be possible to return there in the future.

Would like to visit Iraq and Kashmir but not sure that will ever happen.

Ryeman · 05/08/2025 07:52

I was lucky enough to travel lots when I was younger including Russia, India, SE Asia. Now I’m (irrationally) too anxious to go anywhere! I hope my children get the same opportunities I did.

bibliomania · 05/08/2025 07:59

Waiting for better political conditions to visit Yemen and Eritrea.

sandgrown · 05/08/2025 08:04

I was lucky enough to visit Israel and the religious sites over 40 years ago . I went to Uzbekistan just after the break up of the Soviet Union as my brother worked there. The people were lovely but we had a driver to escort us as foreign females were a bit of a novelty at the time. Everything but food was in short supply and corruption was rife . There was so much to see and I imagine it’s a great tourist destination now. I would love to visit Afghanistan and ,fingers crossed ,I am going to India in 2027.

Seeing how many people have Russia on their lists, I feel very fortunate to have spent a reasonable amount of time there, and been to Moscow, St Petersburg and various other places. I spent several months living a studying there as part of my degree in the 1990s, and visited for holidays in the late 90s and 2000s.

I've travelled on various sleeper trains in Russia, including across Siberia. We stopped off at 4 different cities on the way to Vladivostok, so had breaks from the train. I did really enjoy the train — we spent out time talking, reading, sleeping, watching the world go by outside the window, having train picnics, chatting to Russian passengers and sharing food with them. The landscape seen from the train isn't stunningly beautiful, but I still loved seeing the forests, the fields, the small villages in the middle of nowhere, the large cities we passed through, the rice fields in the far East. We were mostly in 3rd class, which is open plan bunks, so had a very Russian experience. I'd probably go 2nd class if I went again now I'm 30 years older. I fell in love with Russia and its people, and once it has a different leader and it's safe to do so I'll be going back.
