Mine is Haiti. Such a fascinating place and such an interesting (and predictably oppressed) history. I would so love to go there, but even if things improved there I’d likely still be far too chicken shit, truth be told.

Iran

Vodkamartini3olives · 04/08/2025 23:10

I've never felt unsafe in Mexico. We've driven our camper down through California to Tijuana every summer for nearly 10 yrs. Lovely people great food and some of the most beautiful camping spots I've ever stayed in.

UrbanOasis · 04/08/2025 23:11

Iran. Such a fabulous culture but not safe to visit now

Justanotherdramalama · 04/08/2025 23:15

Would love to visit Jordan and Egypt. Maybe in the future.

I really want to go to Georgia with my teen son.

Is it safe to go there? It just seems so precariously positioned . . .

I've got a couple of friends headed off there in a couple of days. Supposed to be lovely.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Syria, but not now in many years. It was wonderful.

The place I’ve always wanted to go is Yemen. Friends have spent time there when it was safer, but the time I was living in that neck of the woods, it was dicey.

I had a Syrian friend when I was at school in the mid 1980s.

I cant believe i turned down the chance to go and stay with them in Damascus one year.

clinellwipe · 04/08/2025 23:28

I’d love to do a Russian ballet tour.

This would be wonderful.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/08/2025 23:45

I would desperately love to go to Ukraine.

I would go despite everything if I didn’t have children - I’m a single parent at that.

I can’t think why I didn’t go before the invasion now, as it sounds wonderful.

tooloololoo · 04/08/2025 21:18

Colombia, Honduras and Venezuela

You can definitely go to Colombia. I've been to Bogotá, just like any other capital city and Villa de Leyva, fascinating and two brilliant dinosaur museums. No problem at all. Cartagena on the Caribbean coast is next on my list.
Cuba is great too, I loved Havana

LillyPJ · 04/08/2025 23:47

India. Looks fascinating but the chaos and crowds in cities, endless curries and poverty put me off.

Croatia, Albania. I'm too scared of racism to go there

I’m Asian and have been to Croatia numerous times. It’s absolutely fine. People were very friendly

Doitrightnow · 04/08/2025 23:50

Iran - friends who have gone said it's the best holiday they've ever had. I had the chance to go in 2017 but didn't and really regret it.

Afghanistan - really interesting history.

Libya, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, mostly for the history. I just love so much of the Middle East, it's so sad.

Mali. Always fancied seeing Timbuktu!
Ethiopia.

I've been fortunate enough to go to Israel (wouldn't go now) and Russia several times (not too interested in returning tbh).

I'd have said Albania and Colombia but friends went there recently and said they were amazing!

Croatia, Albania. I'm too scared of racism to go there

Genuine question but why are you afraid to go to Croatia?

EmmaD11 · 04/08/2025 23:54

Albania is very different now to what it was 20+ years ago. The first time I went to Tirana it was extremely run down and looked nothing like a European city.

Nowadays it is far more modern and less of a culture shock. The rural areas still feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

@PeachTrifle
Iran (20 years ago, it was relatively safe for foreign tourists)

Really 20 years ago? This surprises me

I guess its relative. It was actually 1998 we visited, we stayed with a friends family in Tehran who helped us with travel arrangements to Shiraz and Isfahan. But safer than today.

GCAcademic · 04/08/2025 23:55

I’ve been to India loads of times (including on my own) and love it, but there are a couple of places there I find fascinating but a bit scary and haven’t visited: Kashmir and Varanasi.

In terms of countries: Madagascar and Iran.

Doitrightnow · 04/08/2025 23:57

SaratogaFilly · 04/08/2025 22:58

Mine are places already mentioned on this thread - Afghanistan, Russia, Israel, South Africa, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Morocco and also Colombia.

Morocco is fine. I went there with my preschooler recently and we didn't get any hassle. Everyone was really kind to us. I was nervous beforehand but my view was extremely outdated.

EmmaD11 · 05/08/2025 00:02

I’ve been to nearly 100 countries so naturally that includes some dodgy ones. No country or region scares me as such although I am of course always aware of current affairs and global conflicts when travelling. If you’re well
prepared then most situations are very manageable.

I would love to have the opportunity to do a Michael Palin style trip around the world without flying. I’d plan a route that covered as many of places I haven’t visited before.

Sadly I doubt I’ll ever get the chance now as I’d need a year free to do it.

helphelpimbeingrepressed · 04/08/2025 21:32

I’d love to go to Egypt and Morocco but I’m absolutely terrified of snakes and have been warned about people putting cobras on you for photo opportunities. I’m very blonde and pale so am often a target for this sort of thing. It happened to me as a teenager in India and I was so freaked out I hid instead of going into the Red Fort in Agra.

The only place I saw snake charmers in Morocco was the main square in Marrakech. It was very easy to give them a wide berth - my DC saw them and didn't like them so we just stayed away as we walked through to the souk. We avoided the very sad chained monkeys too.

NeedSleepNowPls · 05/08/2025 00:15

What a great thread idea! Mine is Australia, purely for the fear of enormous spiders. It's really appealing otherwise

WaryCrow · 05/08/2025 00:20

I’ve always been interested in history and in the beginnings of civilization in the Near East in particular. Trouble is the Near East is now a hell hole especially for women. So anywhere there really. I do not want to be just on the ‘beaten paths’ or guarded gate enclaves for tourists, I actually want to see what these places are like so I’m not even too confident in the idea of visiting Egypt or Turkey, and Jordan, Iran or Iraq have long been off my list. Syria and Yemen are war zones of course. Many of the Silk Road Towns are also in very very questionable countries.

It makes you wonder about humans, more specifically men, that this is how those of us responsible for producing the future can expect to be treated. There is not much hope from men. I am glad the birth rate is falling.

Midnightlove · 05/08/2025 00:27

Well i had been planning to go to Israel in the near future before it all kicked off again.. also, mongolia

Mine are places already mentioned on this thread - Afghanistan, Russia, Israel, South Africa, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Morocco and also Colombia.

I've been to Russia twice (last time 6 years ago), Israel, Morocco, South Africa and Colombia. The only ones I wouldn't return to right now are Russia and Israel because of the wars. I really think you'd be fine with the others, just taking the right precautions. I last went to Colombia in Easter with my baby and had a great time. I'd highly recommend it.

Crazymayfly · 05/08/2025 00:36

Russia, Israel, Egypt. I feel like I’ve missed out and won’t ever get the chance now.
