Mine is Haiti. Such a fascinating place and such an interesting (and predictably oppressed) history. I would so love to go there, but even if things improved there I’d likely still be far too chicken shit, truth be told.

Why are you afraid of Australian fauna?

Because it mainly wants to kill you?

Thank you for the recommendation @MrsHamlet 😍

I can offer recommendations for the Caucuses and Mongolia too :)

Libya to see the ancient ruins.

Jurassic Park.

Well, I would love to go to the Maldives 😁
I wouldn’t be scared at all, but it might feel a bit odd as a singleton. I think of it primarily as a romantic destination.
Still, the thought of an overwater villa for a week with lovely food and all my books …

Uzbekistan’s Silk Road. I know several people who have returned unscathed but it is on the ‘don’t go you’ll get kidnapped’ list at the British Consul.

As with many places, I think (hope) it’s safe if you go on a tour. 20 years ago we travelled round Mexico on our own and are very sad to think that what we did - wondering around Oxaca for example - is no longer possible. We visited Russia in 2019 and it was everything I expected but I wouldn’t go now. To be honest, it wasn’t very safe then and we were questioned by the FRS on the train from Moscow to St Petersburg.

In safer times, I’ve been to a lot of the places mentioned - Lebanon, Iran, Jordan, Colombia, Honduras, Cuba. I’d love the opportunity to go back, also to Syria.

For places I haven’t been to, I’d love to go to Iraq, Kashmir, Venezuela.

Syria's a shit hole. I spent a fortnight there many years ago, Damascus is very beautiful in parts but Aleppo is (or was) pure hell. This was way back in the day of Assad's rule so things were different then, no idea if things have improved since his fall 🫤

Studied Russian at uni and lived in St P for a year and absolutely loved it so am really pleased to see all the references to Russia here. I wouldn’t go at the moment but hope it will be possible to return there in the future.

Would like to visit Iraq and Kashmir but not sure that will ever happen.

Are you still able to speak Russian?

Dery · 08/08/2025 13:20

@Waggytail - yes. It’s not perfect by any means (never was) but I can communicate in it and use it for work. Do you speak it, too?

Always wanted to go to Israel. Even when it's not at war I won't go though. I will not give Israel a penny of my money now.

Sevenamcoffee · 09/08/2025 08:17

Another one really hoping to be able to go to Russia at some point. I’’ve never really been to the US although I’d like to and I am put off going there at the moment.

You're missing out. It's a beautiful country.
