300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

Oh, that’s all right then. 🙄

I mean it's either been officially declared a famine or it hasn't.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 03/08/2025 12:53

Well exactly. They are some of the richest countries in the world yet there is no pressure for them to step in.

5000 children are being treated in Qatar, Egypt and UAE.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/08/2025 12:47

Being completely unemotive about it, apart from it being absolutely fine for health professionals to volunteer their time to help these children, it's also going to benefit members of the team who have not had experience of treating the sort of injuries these children have combined with severe malnutrition - crush injuries, explosives injuries, burns, bullet wounds, traumatic amputations, that sort of thing. If something awful happens to a child who has always lived here, such as a massive accident, it's got to be better for their outcomes to have a surgeon who has dealt with injuries of a similar nature.

Agree. I'm not arguing against the Gazan children being treated. I'm arguing that this shows that we could be treating hundreds of extra children and hitherto we've just not arsed ourselves.

So you think the NHS should be responsible for every sick child in the world?

I think we should stop using the NHS to pick up the pieces of our stupid lifestyle choices. Then there would be plenty of money to treat sick children, including international emergency cases.

I tell you this kindly - you are not good at reasoning and should think about whether you can improve.

This thread is not in favour denying healthcare. It is against healthcare currently being denied on demonstrably optional grounds.

If you have an urgent need for healthcare in this country, you will get it. Yes, waiting lists can be long, but when you need it, it is there.

We are the ones causing this suffering to these children. our government is arming the people bombing them. The least we could do is offer some medical care.

We couldn’t. Those people wouldn’t volunteer to do the work of the NHS free of charge. Why would they?

Perhaps if people stopped voting for parties that starve the public sector of funding and then expecting the next party to wave a wand and solve over a decade of underfunding that might help!

To think it's outrageous that we can pay for 300 Gazan kids (it is the NHS paying for this - the philanthropic stuff is separate) but not British kids? The paediatric pain management services in NHS England has a waiting time of c17 weeks.

This isn't about not treating kids from Gaza (although I knew some people would choose to read it that way). It's about the political choice to make children in the UK wait months to have essential surgery or pain treatment. Why is nobody protesting about that?

I’m sorry you have had a bad experience but not everything in life should be based around; if one group of people in a very poor situation gets something essential to their survival that we should all protest or whatever until it is taken away and given to someone else who is deemed more worthy because of where they live or other similar factors. Children are children. I’d hope Gaza medics would do the same for your children we’re the situation reversed.

I think your view point is incredibly selfish. What if higher earners all decided that because they put more taxes into the system that lower class British kids shouldn’t use the health services. (Just as an example, someone up thread has already explained to you how the surgery is being paid for)

Life is unfair enough as it is as you have identified in your op so their is no need to go around taking from others and making the world worse for all of us including yourself.

Is driving a car a lifestyle choice? Should we treat those who are injured in car accidents? What about a football injury? Should we treat those?

I readily admit I don’t know why the wealthy Arab countries much closer to their home aren’t providing this care.

It all feels rather performative.

Because the Arab League are really worried about Gaza, have formally condemned Hamas’ actions and basically want nothing to do with them.

Labour is in charge now who do you think is "fundier" than them?

@GrammarTeacher and everyone else who is battling against the disgusting racism on this thread - bloody well done. So many on here are thickos who haven't bothered to read the article or the full thread - and that is intentional, they don't want to know. They just want to spout their hatred.

For what feels like the millionth time the Arab countries HAVE taken significantly more children. This is part of an international effort to try and do something right for once!

Lovethystupidneighbour · 03/08/2025 13:01

Isn’t it funny how you highlight injured and malnourished children getting medical care as your argument and not the millions frittered away in middle management and the top dogs taking an all too healthy wage.

No, you, are not good at reasoning.

A British child who had severe shrapnel injuries/infection/had limbs amputated would NOT be left for weeks/months waiting for essential surgery. The medical needs you are describing for our British children are completely different to the URGENT, life saving treatment these poor children need. My children have never been left for more than a few hours when they’ve needed urgent treatment in the UK. Yes, they have had to wait for non-urgent treatment, as is life. The children in Palestine are starving to death. Right now, they are starving to death. They are living in tents with rubbish bags for nappies and infection is spreading rapidly.

This idea won’t directly affect any children in the UK, it won’t have any impact on your nice life. Let them have it. If it even happens, the government have been a complete disgrace up until this point so I doubt they’ll actually see this through.

Worried with good reason. My last reply was deleted but the last thing the UK needs is an influx of Gazan extremism. Some Western populations really do not understand what they would be getting themselves into.

I don't have a problem with people who do important jobs getting paid well for them. The point here is there IS more money. We could be getting adults off disability by treating their chronic conditions too. But none of this happens because electorate monkeys want shiny shiny.

Frankly I don’t give a fuck whether it’s official or not. In what world is it acceptable for a child to eat sand?
