300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

300 children from a famine stricken war zone desperately need medical aid, of course we should give it. Other countries have and are taking far higher numbers than we’ve taken. I wish we could do more.

Have there been similar initiatives for Children from Sudan or Nigeria?

You've mistimed your coup de grâce, OP. The last few days of anti immigration threads designed to wind up wavering posters about how Society as We Know It is crumbling at the hands of people in boats have not been enough to convince them that helping a small number of desperately ill, injured, malnourished and at least a significant number with one or both parents dead is something to be criticised and prevented at all costs.

Are you just incapable of non-emotive reasoning then?

For some children in England. If they go to private school, and have for example, a crippling bone condition they are not entitled to NHS treatment (for which their parents have paid tax). Interesting isn’t it.

Can’t get angry about helping starving kids. I’m more angry about my government being complicit in said genocide.

To think it's outrageous that we can pay for 300 Gazan kids (it is the NHS paying for this - the philanthropic stuff is separate) but not British kids? The paediatric pain management services in NHS England has a waiting time of c17 weeks.

This isn't about not treating kids from Gaza (although I knew some people would choose to read it that way). It's about the political choice to make children in the UK wait months to have essential surgery or pain treatment. Why is nobody protesting about that?

My own child had to wait 1 year for urgent spinal surgery in the UK, all whilst she deteriorated mentally and physically in pain. A large part of the wait was due to a lack of high dependency unit beds. Unless the children are being treated privately (which they almost certainly aren’t) then frankly no, I don’t believe that non UK nationals should be elongating waiting lists with the state that our hospitals and NHS are in. It’s a publicity stunt and there are many closer countries (UAE for example has fantastic medical facilities) without the pressures that the UK healthcare system is under that could’ve helped out instead - and avoided 5+ hours of flying!!

Quite possibly. These things happen regularly (wars are a common phenomenon unfortunately). It just so happens that for a variety of reasons the Gaza situation involves a large number of children who need specialist paediatric care.
Similar to how whenever there’s earthquakes we have teams who are sent from this country to help. Sometimes it makes the local news, it rarely makes the national news. These things are going on all the time (David Miliband went to work for an agency involved in just this sort of thing).

The Arab countries won’t take them. We know that. The question, is why?

Read the thread/article. The nearer countries ARE helping.

I’m sorry that your daughter was left in pain for so long though. My own daughter is languishing on a waiting list primarily due to god awful admin processes.

Except the Arab countries have taken them.

Is instead of pitting desperate children against each other, why don’t you complain about the massive amount of money that wasted on bullshit military project that don’t go anywhere and cost billions in wasted funds? Or perhaps take a moment to consider that this Palestinian children have been subjected to a genocide committed by our allies which we have assisted in.

Could you provide proof for this? I used to work in NHS admin in A and E and it was only non-residents/non EU (at the time) that charging was done for.

It can be hard to get NHS treatment for something diagnosed privately.

BIossomtoes · 03/08/2025 12:37

Unless the children are being treated privately (which they almost certainly aren’t)

They’re being treated outside the NHS by unpaid volunteer health professionals.

Have we been just recently arming the side waging genocide against the civilian population in those countries? No, we haven’t. The British establishment has blood on its hands re Israel and they’re belatedly trying to cover their tracks, legally and morally.

I don't understand why the wealthy Arab nations can't do this. Surely culturally/linguistically it will be far easier for them to adapt to being in one of those countries than the UK?

They are though.

HermioneWeasley · 03/08/2025 12:38

Why has our government decided these children from this war zone are worthy. What about Yemen, Sudan, Rohingya kids who need medical treatment?

Martymcfly24 · 03/08/2025 12:40

From Project Pure Hopes Website
"We have been working hard to change that since November 2023. We have a simple, urgent mission: to bring injured Gazan children to the UK for life-saving treatment – at no cost to the NHS, the government or the taxpayer."

It hasn’t. That decision has been made by the charity Project Pure Hope set up specifically for Gazan children.

legsekeven · 03/08/2025 12:41

Can’t we just be happy that 300 children are getting vital help. Why does it matter where they come from. My child has a very very serious medical issue, his treat at a major London hospital has been amazing. There is room for these children. Show a little compassion

Again, just because you haven’t heard about it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. We also have many healthcare workers operating through MSF and the Red Cross in a variety of countries.
Do I think we should do more? Yes. But judging by today’s threads I’m increasingly alone there.

Try again

This will operate “in parallel” with a scheme run by the group Project Pure Hope, which was set up by volunteer medical professionals to bring sick and injured Gazan children to the UK for treatment.

Up to 300 children could be evacuated from Gaza and given NHS treatment in the UK.

The plans are reportedly set to be announced within weeks.
A parent or guardian will accompany each child, as well as siblings if necessary, and the Home Office will carry out biometric and security checks before travel, the Sunday Times reported.

This will happen “in parallel” with an initiative by Project Pure Hope, a group set up to bring sick and injured Gazan children to the UK privately for treatment.

Because the British state is morally and perhaps also legally culpable in this genocide. Now trying to belatedly cover its tracks. Probably half the British public hate Muslims so much that couldn’t give a shit how many children die in Gaza so it wouldn’t be much of a publicity stunt anyway.
