300 children from Gaza to be brought to the UK for free specialist NHS care

Fragmentedbrain · 03/08/2025 01:33

According to the Sunday Times. That's nearly as many beds as there are in Great Ormond Street, where the average waiting time for paediatric surgery is 15 weeks (which is fairly typical nationwide).

Why is it mysteriously possible for government to deliver these showy, headline-grabbing measures (I know we already knew it could happen from COVID policy) but not to just make systems work well in an ordinary way?

Do you think that during WW2 when the UK took in refugee children from Europe that we shouldn’t have done that? We had rationing, a stretched health service, yet as far as I know there was no backlash about helping others. Do you look unkindly upon people in the UK at that time who didn’t protest against it?
I worry what the far right discourse has done to a lot of people’s barometer of right and wrong, and how quickly people are to say “but I don’t have enough/I don’t want other people having what I have”.

placemats · 03/08/2025 21:32

So you have no humanity for other people who are in need?

Don't be ridiculous. I have humanity for people in need but I choose to put my own children ahead of other people in need as I imagine most parents would.

Exactly.

So much ‘I’m not racist but…..’ on this thread.

When your children sustain appalling, life changing injuries I’ll stand right with you.

The refugee children such as the kindertransport were all privately funded and/or funded by charities.
Also the NHS didn't exist until after the second WW.

Edited for typo

Becuase British devil Balfour and all the zionist PM are responsible for Palestine suffering for nearly a century! The least they can do. It is a start. Hut I expect 1000000% more

I can't speak for other posters but my objections have nothing to do with racism. I'd feel exactly the same if the children were white Europeans, Americans, Australians et .

So presumably you posted your objections to this on SM?

Europe is on our doorstep. I don't know why some of you will not see it is the distance and logistics here when there are excellent healthcare facilities in countries closer. Plus the massive demands on our nhs that these project hope folk will be working 'in parallel with'.

How about appalling, life changing illness where a simple injury or stomch upset could kill them. Will that do? 🙄

Really, this is about logistics is it? Or because they are Palestinian kids?

Given you are on multiple other threads denying the genocide in Gaza, I don’t believe your sudden concern for the NHS for one second. Disengenuous.

Which your child is receiving treatment for on the NHS. Funded by all of us. I am glad to be contributing to that.

Have you been to A&E recently by any chance?? It’s a bloodbath.

I recently went on a Friday night. Triage within an hour. My injury was such that it could be treated by the triage nurse (though did need some intervention - I’d been sent by 111) so straight back out again. If I’d needed a doc there was a 5 hour wait. Not crowded - plenty of seat.
Mind, I’m in Wales which I’ve been told on here is a hell hole due to 25 years of Labour, so that may have made a difference.

I'd say the same if they were flying patients here from Australia in the hundreds.

Have your children got traumatic war injuries? Missing limbs? Shrapnel wounds?

Then the people treating your children will not be the same people treating the children from Gaza, will they?

Gallipoli. Waltzing Matilda.

And this planet helps those who travel, tour, immigrate, emigrate. We are human and we help when needed and required. It's been happening for millenia.

As I posted earlier, better, NICE approved treatment is available but because it costs more than the standard, basic option it is considered unnecessary despite the likely improvement in quality of life and safety from illness/death and long term side effects. This treatment is widely available in other countries.

My point being if the NHS can't afford what is standard treatment in the rest of the EU for it's citizens, how can it afford to pay for treatment for non UK residents?

pointythings · 03/08/2025 21:56

@Nestingbirds my DC1 and I were in A&E some two months ago (England). Triaged and given pain meds within 45 minutes. Long wait thereafter because my DC's injury was less serious and treatment was prioritised by urgency, but the place was calm and orderly. And this was on a Friday night.

You are misunderstanding.

If you read Sky (free link) very carefully they are trying to be impartial and they specifically mentioned private treatments as another avenue. The boy with facial injuries was funded privately.

But these 300 children and their families incl siblings will be treated by NHS and funded by government.

Ok, thank you for clarifying.

Apologies for misunderstanding.

Of course there are injured people in gaza, sadly it is a warzone and hamas use civilians as human shields.
