To be absolutely furious with my neighbour?

I live in a rented semi detached house. The neighbour attached to me I generally get on quite well with. However there are a few issues that are really starting to grate on me.
Every evening her and her partner smoke weed on their patio, just meters from my back door. In this heat obviously we have the windows open, I have a young child (DD3), and the house is absolutely stinking of cannabis. I hate hate hate the smell and often by the time we have smelt it we don’t have enough time to get all the windows shut before it’s lingering in our house.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, she has now quite spontaneously brought a parrot.
I have nothing against parrots or indeed most birds in general, however she leaves it in its cage 24/7 and every evening for hours opens her back patio doors and pushes its cage out into the garden for it to get some “fresh air”. Queue a CONSTANT, extremely loud, extremely high pitched almost whistle noise from said bird. This goes on and on and on and on. I regularly text her complaining that we need sleep and the bird is driving me insane, to which she does in fairness close the doors. However it’s every night. I don’t know if any of you have a young parrot but the noise is just grating.
There have been various other issues, such as her children loudly playing in the garden at very unsociable hours of the evening, loud arguments between her and her partner and lots of banging noises from the house late at night and early mornings.
I do in general get along with them and don’t want to rock the boat, is there a polite way I can request her to smoke at the bottom of the garden? And for goodness sake get rid of the bird? We do share a landlord and at this point as I listen to the bird shriek AGAIN, I’m considering making a serious complaint. AIBU?

So you have both a dog and a cat, but you want to her to rid of her bird? Good luck.

I was in New York earlier this year and the place reeked of it - and this is in touristy bits and the CBD. It was everywhere. Not even in my “edgy” bit of SE London is it that bad.

Yes, we went in May and could not believe the smell of cannabis everywhere. It was probably the only thing I disliked in New York.

Trallala · 21/08/2025 06:31

I have a similar situation with my neighbour - but in their case it's 'medical' cannabis obtained via an online pharmacy (we are on good terms and they even gave me a link and discount code!). In my case, I just shut the door when I smell it, as it's only around 10pm.

But I'm guessing if we didn't get along and I wanted to report them, well, even if the police could be bothered to come, my neighbour has a prescription (albeit an online - but nevertheless legal- pharmacy) so no offence would have occurred.

I couldn't care less if they were snorting lines either in their own home

With kids in the house? I bloody would.

Just speak to them. I love the small of cannabis so that wouldn't bother me and it's a bit unreasonable asking them to not smoke on their own property so not sure you can do much about that. They are unlikely to go to the bottom of the garden , they are enjoying a smoke on their own patio so I think you just have to suck that up.

The parrot again not sure what they can do. It must be driving them nuts too
Continue to message them every time

Why on earth would you condone illegal drug use in front of children?

Jotunn9 · 21/08/2025 07:23

I also think she will get rid of the parrot as she sounds wholly irresponsible and they arent easy to care for. It's obviously very distressed the poor thing. They're so intelligent. I hope it gets a better home.

LizzyEm · 21/08/2025 07:29

Could you buy her a bistro set for the bottom of her garden, to ask her to smoked there instead?

Then see it on marketplace 2 days later.

TammyJones · 21/08/2025 07:52

Well done op.
good update.

Update for anyone following parrot saga.
it drove me mental. I could hear it constantly. A ridiculously loud, high pitched chirp. Every three seconds. Constantly. Even when I couldn’t hear it I was convinced I could hear it.
Im pregnant and very nauseous. I came home from work and desperately just wanted some sleep. Her kids were in the garden screaming at the top of their lungs and the parrot was going and again, I could smell the weed.
I lost it. I lost my absolute shit. I let loose at her. I told her every single unacceptable thing she does, parrot, screaming kids, weed, the lot.
she apologised profusely and has relocated the fucking bird somewhere else in the house and I can no longer hear it.
the kids are now actively being parented and told not to scream in the garden.
haven’t smelt any cannabis since.
wish I’d done it in a calmer and more respectful manner but I got my point across and at least for now the waters are calm.
I’ve given a stern warning that if anything happens again I will complain to LL, and any other relevant necessary agencies.
she seems to understand. For anyone else in similar positions, I recommend just going mental. 😉

Massive, massive kudos! Bloody well done! I cannot comprehend how somebody can be so unaware or lacking in consideration. I’m sincerely in awe of you going nuclear, hopefully the peace will last.

Holdingonfornow · 21/08/2025 08:05

We are wet lettuces about complaining to neighbours, as had bad neighbours in a previous home who hated us from the start and it’s really not nice to be in a feuding situation. It will rain/be autumn soon and it won’t seem as bad.

Holdingonfornow · 21/08/2025 08:06

Just seen your update. Well done!!!

Ddakji · 21/08/2025 08:10

Great update, @Smurphy99!

Undortunately, you’re now going to get a bunch of posters incapable of clicking on “see all” to read all your posts who are now spouting their words of wisdom for a few more pages based on your OP alone!

Lavenderbluex · 21/08/2025 08:14

I've had this. Depending on age you can say the HV visited and has reported the smell (happened to another neighbour). You could also say it’s making dc clothes smell of smoke. If

Personally I’ve found most that smoke it pisstakers in general. It’s disgusting they’re doing it in front of their young children and surely a safeguarding issue.

If it continues after you’ve given them a polite notice, report to police and landlord.

Lavenderbluex · 21/08/2025 08:15

Sorry just seen update, go you OP! CFs like that need told bluntly.

Overwhelmedandunderfed · 21/08/2025 08:17

Report it anonymously. It’s not legal here yet.

CurtsyFriends · 21/08/2025 08:53

Edited to add: just seen your latest update - well done you!!! Hope they keep it that way.

Ugh i can’t stand the smell of weed. I was working away and staying in a hotel for 12 weeks last year and if my room faced the car park I could set my watch by someone smoking weed. Just after 5 and just after 10 like clockwork.

It was bad enough that I asked to change rooms to the other side of the hotel. The hotel said it was another guest but I recon it was staff due to the regularity of it and the fact that it was 12 weeks in a row. Granted I was staying there for 12 weeks so another guest could, but I think staff was more likely.

We did eventually see the culprit smoking one time. He was in the smoking shelter. This meant that the smoke had to go around 2 walls to get to some of the rooms I had been in. It was a good 100m I would say.

I never once smelt cigarette smoke which shows just how much further the stench of weed goes. So unless your garden is really, really long I don’t think it will make much of a difference if they smoke it by the back door or at the bottom of the garden, sadly 😞

I feel sorry for the poor parrot too. I don’t like birds being in small cages. Big cages/runs for chickens and the like I can cope with as they have plenty of room to stretch their legs and live a normal life and the cage is to keep predators out. But small cages for inside birds just seem mean and restrict them from doing normal bird things.

BananagramBadger · 21/08/2025 09:13

Does cannabis smell different to different people? To me it smells similar to strong BO.

We had similar neighbours, they smoked normal cigarettes (but a lot of them)next to the house which meant I had to keep my bedroom window shut in all heat in the summer or it would stink. They also woke us at 5 am every single day shouting at their dogs and children. Only solution was moving but I had a mental breakdown first.

Now we have neighbours who have a party about once a year and even then have good taste in music!

Hope your shouting at them gets long term results OP

tipsyraven · 21/08/2025 09:15

Everyone knows about the secondhand smoke dangers but they don’t seem to know it is the same with cannabis. I’d have a word with the neighbours about it and probably get an air purifier for my child’s bedroom and one for the other part of the house. As for the bird, record its racket and send it to the landlord. Having pets in a rented property usually requires some sort of control over disturbance to neighbours.

WELL DONE! This is a great lesson for all the 'non-confrontational types' to help them realise in most cases it's exacerbating the problems and the only way to make thoughtless people change their behaviour is to confront it. Ideally before this stage but still, a pregnant woman losing her shit can get a great result!

BourgeoisBabe · 21/08/2025 09:24

The parrot thing is cruel. I don't think people should be allowed have parrots as pets.

Rolosaregoo · 21/08/2025 22:55

If she’s in the UK cannabis is illegal so yeah they shouldn’t be smoking it on any property. It’s also not theirs, it’s rented, so grounds to get kicked out. I don’t see how it’s at all unreasonable to ask them to do it away from OPs windows at the very least.

not all cannabis is illegal in the uk though. you can get cannabis on a medical prescription here, through both the nhs (although this is less common) and through private medical pharmacies.

I have same situation with my neighbours asked again tonite if the could stop, they had 6 in total today two whilst their 4 year old was playing right next to them, coughing her guts up. Asked what the f..k has to do with me and told to close my f..king windows I've had my window shut all summer and it still comes in. When I come home from work it is so strong in my stairwell in the hallway. They are new neighbours and so inconsiderate I have threaten with police but let's be honest they won't do anything. Not been able to have windows open, between them it starts from 6am and tonite conversation took place at 23:23 I'm livid my house stinks and I wake up everyday wanting to be sick the smell turns my stomach.

99bottlesofkombucha · 27/08/2025 00:26

Well done! I’d prefer to move than live next to that, I’d worry about the smoke and our brains. Hopefully she gets it now.
