To be absolutely furious with my neighbour?

I live in a rented semi detached house. The neighbour attached to me I generally get on quite well with. However there are a few issues that are really starting to grate on me.
Every evening her and her partner smoke weed on their patio, just meters from my back door. In this heat obviously we have the windows open, I have a young child (DD3), and the house is absolutely stinking of cannabis. I hate hate hate the smell and often by the time we have smelt it we don’t have enough time to get all the windows shut before it’s lingering in our house.
As if this wasn’t bad enough, she has now quite spontaneously brought a parrot.
I have nothing against parrots or indeed most birds in general, however she leaves it in its cage 24/7 and every evening for hours opens her back patio doors and pushes its cage out into the garden for it to get some “fresh air”. Queue a CONSTANT, extremely loud, extremely high pitched almost whistle noise from said bird. This goes on and on and on and on. I regularly text her complaining that we need sleep and the bird is driving me insane, to which she does in fairness close the doors. However it’s every night. I don’t know if any of you have a young parrot but the noise is just grating.
There have been various other issues, such as her children loudly playing in the garden at very unsociable hours of the evening, loud arguments between her and her partner and lots of banging noises from the house late at night and early mornings.
I do in general get along with them and don’t want to rock the boat, is there a polite way I can request her to smoke at the bottom of the garden? And for goodness sake get rid of the bird? We do share a landlord and at this point as I listen to the bird shriek AGAIN, I’m considering making a serious complaint. AIBU?

Heavens.
If your home burns down the LL won’t get a penny from insurance if he hasn’t done regular inspections.

This. Your LL should be doing them including safety checks.m

If they have kids report them to social services. My neighbours smoked cannabis. It was coming through the vents and into my childrens room and the room and clothes stunk of it.

my childrens school raised a safe guarding concern. I had to explain it was coming from next door.
Tbf to my neighbours i explained the situation to them and they did stop smoking it in the house and went down bottom of garden.

SonK · 03/08/2025 16:44

It's disgusting OP, I used to have this issue in a previous area. It was a middle aged man, I just spoke to him and explained I was pregnant and worried about the affects and how it made me feel more sick.

Fortunately he was nice, apologised a lot and I don't know how, but I hardly smelt it after that conversation so maybe he did it elsewhere.

Have a chat with the the neighbour first OP x

Anyone who thinks cannabis should be legalised should all be made to go and live in a town together. The smell gives me the absolute rage ( ironic as that’s not the purpose of cannabis ) 🤣

You’re obviously not smelling it properly!

I was in New York earlier this year and the place reeked of it - and this is in touristy bits and the CBD. It was everywhere. Not even in my “edgy” bit of SE London is it that bad.

You love the smell of cannabis? Extremely odd. I have a young child and I don’t particularly want her going to preschool in clothes that smell of drugs. The more concerning thing is she has two young children (2 and 4 I believe) herself, so not only are they stoned looking after their children but they’re actively exposing them to the smoke. Even if it was cigarettes, yes I would expect them to go to the end of the garden in summer so it doesn’t blow into their neighbours windows, it’s disgusting!

you don’t need to suck it up at all. You have a right to enjoy your home without the smell of cannabis blowing in.
I would absolutely try speaking to her politely about it and keep a record in case things do not improve and you need to go the council to report it.

We have a neighbor out the back of us with a parrot and it’s the worst noise ever!! Sounds like someone killing people with a knife in a horror film. Schreechy fucker. 🦜🦜🦜

Honestly an appalling noise. Sat on the sofa with a poorly toddler, windows and doors shut.. can still hear it clear as day. I hate it

So if cannabis was legalized would that actually make the smell not come into your house or are you being a bit pearl clutchy?

Weird. Why is not wanting your house and clothes to stink of weed ‘pearl clutchy’?

Agree, every street in Manhattan.

I couldn't care less if they were snorting lines either in their own home

Yes but the OP like the vast majority of people does mind the cat piss sink of illegal drugs in her home.

It's not about what a cool girl you are.

Mastercom · 03/08/2025 21:40

I wonder if they’d care if you suggested that you’d had comments about your child smelling of cannabis and you were concerned they’d be a social services referral. I assume they’d prefer to not be associated with that.

SiameseBlueEyes · 03/08/2025 21:53

I'd move - even if you could get the police to "raid" the place about the cannabis, they're still going to have the parrot.

TheOccupier · 03/08/2025 22:00

Report these neighbours to social services. People who use drugs around young children deserve what they get.

BananaPeanutToast · 03/08/2025 22:04

Maddy70 · 03/08/2025 09:06

Just speak to them. I love the small of cannabis so that wouldn't bother me and it's a bit unreasonable asking them to not smoke on their own property so not sure you can do much about that. They are unlikely to go to the bottom of the garden , they are enjoying a smoke on their own patio so I think you just have to suck that up.

The parrot again not sure what they can do. It must be driving them nuts too

If she’s in the UK cannabis is illegal so yeah they shouldn’t be smoking it on any property. It’s also not theirs, it’s rented, so grounds to get kicked out. I don’t see how it’s at all unreasonable to ask them to do it away from OPs windows at the very least.

Foodylicious · 03/08/2025 22:08

Doesn't the landlord need to organise an annual had safety check?
If he hasn't done so in the last year, ask him when it's happening, and have something else at your property he needs to check on too, so he doesn't just send the gas safe person on their own.

cobrakaieaglefang · 03/08/2025 22:08

If its a rental they may need permission to have the bird and usually pets have to be kept so they don't cause nuisance. We have a bird and had to get written permission.
Weed stinks, I feel for you. Most of my neighbours smoke it, and they are all pensioners! Ageing 60s/70s hippies I think! Child noises are more difficult. It's harder to keep kids quiet, but they shouldn't be out making a racket at unsociable hours.

4forksache · 03/08/2025 22:10

We did a safeguarding referral for a child that we smelt weed on at school.

A pp suggested saying that.

You could say that you have been spoken to at school about it and have managed to convince them that it was nothing, but obviously if school smell it again it will open up a huge can of worms so could they smoke at the bottom of the garden to avoid investigation.

CravingPotNoodle · 03/08/2025 22:11

Same here with cannabis smoking neighbours. There’s no getting away from it and we wonder if they’re growing the stuff because it’s that strong. Spoke to them about it and they excuse it by saying they have mental health problems and adhd since Covid. That’s all fucking right then! Selfish fuckers.

DogsandFlowers · 03/08/2025 11:11

Also expecting someone to smoke a cigarette at the end of their garden? Bonkers. I always say if you’re that fussy you need to buy a large detached house. You can’t afford it? Suck it up I guess ☺️

So if the smell isn’t a problem then smoke indoors?

Many posters on this forum are, in fact, not mothers but rather red pill men looking to rile up mothers. Some in this thread for sure.

Spectre8 · 03/08/2025 22:26

Why do they smoke outdoors? Why not smoke indoors? Oh thays right they dont want their house or clothes to stink!

Id be petty and go out and spray a whole can of cheaper air freshener everytime they came out and started smoking. Or maybe get some horse manure ...even that smells better than weed!

tillyandmilly · 03/08/2025 22:33

Why are do many people smoking this illegal drug? I smell it everywhere! Its foul!
