New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting. There are currently 10 items on The Observer website The real Salt Path | The Observer
To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for eleven very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.
No saltiness. Keep to the path.

To be fair, I think when Moth talks about not being able to read, he's talking about brain fog, where you just can't concentrate and read the same sentence over and over. It doesn't stop you writing or reading short instruction . It's actually really frustrating but would definitely of been made worse by taking Pregabalin. I was put on this when I was first diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and I lost weeks. I'm not surprised he felt so much better and brighter when he came off it.

All of that is very feasible & fair, however acc to JI the Beowulf recitation is the very first time he can focus on words on a page & read at all for some time. May all still fit as you say.

I find it remarkable that all this about not reading until St Ives wasn’t in the book. It would make it all so much more dramatic- unless TW thought it up much later on.

Thanks for your guidance @DisappointedReader.

This is probably bit of a damp squid squib but here's details from the marriage certificate.

Timothy Ronald Walker was a Plasterer from Burton on Trent, and that his father was a Master Plasterer - as we know. I raise an eyebrow at the idea that he went to university before becoming a Plasterer in the family business.

Sally Ann Winn was a Clerical Officer from a farm in Dunstall, Burton on Trent. Her father was a Farm Stockman.

Clerical Officer suggests a Civil Service job, which fits in with working in a law court. It was quite easy to get into the Civil Service in the 80s but some basic qualifications were required - I joined the Civil Service in the early 80s and some O Grades were required in Scotland. Presumably it was the same in England (GCSEs/O Levels).

As all parents are named, including mothers' maiden names, her pen name is on the certificate, albeit the wrong way round.

Age on marriage were 25 for Tim and 23 for Sally.

This is fantastic!

So Sally's father was a farm stockman.

Official confirmation that he wasn't a tenant farmer at all.

Brilliant work, @CocteauTwin

I don't remember if this has been discussed yet, but
Was the very useful coincidence of SW losing her job shortly after the Hemmings' bookkeeper retired really a coincidence?
I assume the retirement of an employee in a local business is hardly a secret, and Martin Hemmings' trustful nature and rather chaotic way of organizing his business was probably well known.
So what if SW saw an opportunity, pretended to have just lost her job to get a foot into the door of a business where it was rather easy to get away with embezzlement?

(Sorry if this has been talked about before - I just remember a suggestion she might have lost her hotel job for stealing there as well.)

There is a pattern of interviewers arriving bright eyed and bushy tailed and expecting to meet Raymoth only to discover there has been 'a last minute change of plan' and Moth is unavailable (gone shopping/gone for a walk/feeling under the weather etc etc).

When he has appeared in an interview with SW (I think the HeraldScotland was one) when asked what he remembered about the seminal week when they were evicted from the farm in Wales and he was diagnosed with CBD he confesses to the fact that it was all rather hazy and he isn't really sure what happened...

I’ve followed these threads but not posted before.

It will be interesting if a credible journalist questions whether they completed the walks when they said they did.

Surely their bank statements will prove where they were and when. If ‘false allegations’ are made it will be simple for them to refute them. If they don’t it’ll be pretty damning.

The simplest way to refute the most 'heinous' of the allegations (the 2013 CBD diagnosis being fabricated) would be to furnish a copy of the July and October 2013 neurologist's consultation letters confirming the CBD diagnosis as described in TSP.

4 weeks on from the Observer allegations, these letters have been conspicuous by their absence....

That’s a good point, but they could just refuse to hand over their bank statements, on confidentiality grounds.

Yes, great find which uncovers another lie. A stockman is an employee not the farmer.

This is a very good and probable suggestion- would account for the missing year but you can still get a loan, at least, to fund the course. If not a grant which could at least subsidise you.

Of course! Good thinking @SereneLilac . That is very likely the answer - so the 'missing' year will actually have been much of the same, ie studying and living on Moth's grant/loan as you'd then have got one, and possibly some benefits too, while on an Access year. It's a bit too mundane to fit into their preferred triumphs v disasters narrative though.

Perhaps promises made by SW & TW - more witness/first hand accounts from people they've lied to

From what CH said at the news event the other day, I think it's very likely there will
be a piece by her about certain discrepancies in TSP (et al!) concerning the walk(s). I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Will that include your own discoveries?

OakPark · 02/08/2025 21:51

Moth could have the limited arm swing due to an old shoulder injury or arthritis. I knew a plasterer who had to have shoulder surgery on both shoulders after years of work.
