To be shocked about this?

My friend just said that they went on a coach trip to wales yesterday with her children. One of which has had chicken pox since Tuesday, so only a few days before. She said she’s not all scabbed over either. To me, I’m quite shocked they would do this, especially as these coach trips tend to have older people on them, maybe babies/pregnant people.

I would urge any adult who didn’t have chickenpox as a child to get vaccinated against shingles.

Or get vaccinated against chickenpox.

whitewineandsun · 03/08/2025 18:43

Did you tell her how idiotic she was being? I'd be stepping back some.

I know people who got shingles as adults. Just awful.

autienotnaughty · 03/08/2025 18:52

My sil and bil took their dd to a large busy country park when she had chicken pox neither they or pil seemed bothered. But when ds had molisculum they all acted like he had rabies despite the doctor saying ds was to go about his normal routines as it’s a long term condition

Elderflower14 · 03/08/2025 18:53

I took Wilf to his adopted grandparents not realising he had chickenpox.. Grandad ended up with shingles... Nana banned us from the bungalow for a fortnight!!

FalseSpring · 03/08/2025 18:53

Very selfish behaviour by your friend and I hope you told her that you thought she was unreasonable. People need calling out when they do things like this.

Those at risk of shingles are the ones that HAVE had chickenpox. It's the same virus it just lays dormant in your system. Do they even do a shingles jab for younger adults? Surely the worry is about getting chickenpox as an adult and whether to have the chickenpox jab or not? Since it's so much more serious in adults.

That's odd-I thought it only spread one way ie you could catch CP from someone with shingles but not the other way around.

Miniaturemom · 03/08/2025 19:00

I have never had chickenpox. Since I have MS I’d really like to avoid it, and do worry about my young children getting it.

PensionedCruiser · 03/08/2025 19:06

Annoyeddd · 03/08/2025 17:37

Most older people will have had chickenpox either as children or from their own children so they need not be a worry to you.

If you've had chicken pox, then as an older adult, you are very vulnerable to developing shingles, which is why they are trying to vaccinate vulnerable people. However, it's taking time to do everyone.

Brickinthewa11 · 03/08/2025 19:14

Shocked and not shocked. Shocked as it’s a horrible thing to do. It’s a horrible thing to justify doing. It’s airborne too, so on a bloody coach trip? Not shocked as there’s been a shift in recent years (post lockdown) to almost maximising infections in schools, work, hospitals and so on, whilst pretending there’s no impact on people’s health by doing so. The “wash your hands” for airborne viruses has done a number on some people too.

This is true. I don't know why people have such trouble understanding this but it is extraordinary how many people do.
Surely if a person can read mumsnet they can read NHS website.
This whole confusion plays out every single time CP is mentioned.
I am immunosuppressed so I have a vested interest in trying to explain. It is the health version of cancel the cheque.

I would like to have my shingles vaccine but I don't think I will ever fall into the designated age group. I have been waiting 10 years. The goal pists keep moving.

I'm old.

I've never had chickenpox. If I get it, I could be very ill.

I still wear a mask when I have a cold, a habit I picked up since covid to stop others getting infected. It's not hard to think about the greater good.

She's a selfish irresponsible cunt of a person.

I got it when I was 36, and it made me really bloody ill.

I dread to think how bad it would be if I'd got at the age I am now, almost 70.

Some people really are selfish fuckers.

I had shingles a few times in my 40s and 50s.

It was bloody painful, but became less so with each episode.

I've not had chicken pox, and like a pp would probably be really ill if I caught it, particularly as I have a reduced immune system. A friend of mine had it at 38 and almost died. She was in intensive care for some time.

I'm around 60, and would prefer people to not take their infectious children out in public places.

OSTMusTisNT · 03/08/2025 19:27

My friends unborn baby died at around 6 months gestation due to exposure to chickenpox.

People really need to be educated about these things as they don't realise how dangerous a virus it can be.

Gigglydancybox · 03/08/2025 19:30

My youngest caught chicken pox off her older siblings when she was 12 weeks old, might not of been so bad but she was born 10.5 weeks early so was 1.5 weeks corrected. At the time she weighed around 7lbs, had over 60 spots on her tiny head alone. Could t have any medication not even calpol and it was horrendous, to make matters worse she has had shingles twice, the first time when she was 10.5 months old on the day of the very first lockdown so the GP would t even see her. Chickenpox is highly contagious and can be really dangerous for all age groups. I could t be friends with your friend any longer and I would be telling her exactly why. Selfish bitch.

Topseyt123 · 03/08/2025 19:34

That's very shitty and ignorant of her and I would want to tell her so.

Oh, and pregnant WOMEN please. Not this pregnant people bollocks.

For those at the back, and from the NHS website, you CAN’T get shingles from Chicken Pox.

To be shocked about this?
Beeloux · 03/08/2025 19:39

That would infuriate me. I remember taking ds to a playgroup while pregnant and a kid was in the ballpit with himcovered in weepy chickenpox. I was thinking surely not but got ds straight out and the leader ended up kicking them out as there was many pregnant woman.

I was fuming. I had to get blood tests done by the midwife to make sure I was immune.

Lemniscate8 · 03/08/2025 19:40

awful behaviour.

ukgone2pot · 03/08/2025 19:40

I was queing up in a really large Tesco pharmacy a few weeks ago, when a mother came in with her young child and asked the assistant for lotion for her dc's chickenpox. I just stood there, looked over at the child who was covered in spots.

Now, I don't know the exact etiquette on how safe it is, or when children should be allowed out etc, but I was a bit gobsmacked considering she stood in the queue with lots of elderly people and didn't seem at all phased.
