To be shocked about this?

My friend just said that they went on a coach trip to wales yesterday with her children. One of which has had chicken pox since Tuesday, so only a few days before. She said she’s not all scabbed over either. To me, I’m quite shocked they would do this, especially as these coach trips tend to have older people on them, maybe babies/pregnant people.

You don't catch shingles from chickenpox

Shingles is the reactivation of the virus in someone who has already had chicken pox and is usually immune suppressed/run down.

Not everyone gets chicken pox as a child. My kids gave it to me when I was 31! And it was awful. I was off work for 2 weeks!
Extremely inconsiderate of this woman and I'd be telling her so

Add Whooping Cough to that. I caught this as a 60 year old and it was horrible. I was out of action for nearly 3 months.

Womblingmerrily · 03/08/2025 18:01

If you're pregnant and had chicken pox or chicken pox vaccination then you are immune.(probably)

If you are planning a pregnancy it is probably a good idea to check your immunity and consider vaccination if not immune.

Why, unless you have a genuine good reason that comment is borderline racism

It’s a joke you idiot! Based on the way the OP phrased the post. It could have said “…coach trip to “insert any destination” and the joke still works.
Honestly the oddballs on MN these days!
Borderline racism my arse.

You're missing the point. If an older adult catches Chickenpox from a sick person on a coach, they can then go on to have Shingles.

Womblingmerrily · 03/08/2025 18:04

No I'm not missing the point

Most adults will have had chickenpox and be immune.

Are you talking about the vanishingly small number of older adults who have never had chicken pox and have not chosen to get a chicken pox vaccination either?

Womblingmerrily · 03/08/2025 18:04

Plus shingles is available to all age groups - quite common in teenagers and just as unpleasant.

Pregnant WOMEN.

No I am not shocked. People and their thoughtlessness do not shock me anymore. Sadly.

👌🏻

Womblingmerrily · 03/08/2025 18:07

I'm not condoning someone travelling with active chickenpox but it is actually more contagious before the spots come out.

in fact most illnesses are contagious before all symptoms become apparent.

We are all swimming in a soup of each other's viruses, bacteria and fungi.

Wash your hands!!

Why are you trying to minimise some people’s shitty selfish behaviour?

Even if you had chicken pox as a child, it doesn’t make you immune to catching it again and it could turn into shingles, which is very nasty indeed!

I had chicken pox as a teenager and my dad caught it off me and really suffered with shingles. He’d had chicken pox as a kid but it didn’t prevent him getting shingles.

Not every older person has children either. Two of my siblings in their 70’s don’t have children.

People don't catch shingles - the virus is suppressed in their system until the immune system is low then it emerges and causes pain, rash and distress.
People with shingles should also stay in - I think I caught chickenpox from a friend's auntie who was visiting.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 03/08/2025 17:56

Erm, they can get shingles

It’s not only old people who can get shingles. One of my children had chicken pox at 5 months old and shingles at 3 years old, most likely contracted from someone infectious on an aeroplane.

I had my eighth miscarriage as a result of someone similarly selfish doing the same thing. Oh well, as long as she’s happy, why give a toss about anyone else who might suffer for it?

I am so sorry that happened to you.
The NHS website is very clear on the advice around chickenpox. There is no excuse for knowingly taking a child with active CP into a crowded place.

“You idiot”, “Oddballs”, “My arse”

Your joke was terrible, you could insert any destination as you say, and it would still be terrible. Add to that your immediate insults and as your “go to comeback” and it seems that there are a few very unpleasant people on MN as well.

endofthelinefinally · 03/08/2025 18:18

Nobody can catch shingles.
You can catch chickenpox from someone with chickenpox or from someone with shingles.
I don't know why so many people find this difficult to grasp. The NHS website is really easy to read and the advice is easy to follow.

I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. What an awful thing to happen. For someone who worked for the NHS for many years - and throughout Covid - the levels of selfish thoughtless behaviour where all of us but young, vulnerable and older people in particular are being put at risk of potentially serious infection continues to stagger me.

silverstorm101 · 03/08/2025 18:26

Also a lot of parents also seem to think chicken pox is something and nothing. Most of my children contracted it and it was a very mild illness, however when one of my sons came down with it it was horrific. He had them in his eyelids, down his throat, you could hardly see any normal skin and he ended up very poorly in hospital from them and he was a healthy fit young boy beforehand.

Very selfish behaviour. I used to do children's parties and had many an argument with parents who still wanted their parties to go ahead when their child was still infectious. I worked with a lot of vulnerable children and could not risk that for my staff or others. But I would always get the response 'it's just chicken pox'

Mirabai · 03/08/2025 18:29

Someone did this to me - came to visit me with the tail end of chicken pox when I was 21. I got it, then shingles and still have nerve pain from it 30 years later. So thanks.

AdoraBell · 03/08/2025 18:32

WTF? Completely unreasonable to do that with child with chickenpox.

Sunshineandoranges · 03/08/2025 18:32

My son got chicken pox in his thirties . He was extremely ill. Your friend is nasty.

Fernie6491 · 03/08/2025 18:34

My DD caught chickenpox in her late thirties, she felt really rough for a while.

ShesTheAlbatross · 03/08/2025 18:34

Some people are selfish dicks.

She probably sends them to school if they spend the night throwing up as well.

Enrichetta · 03/08/2025 18:36

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 03/08/2025 17:56

Erm, they can get shingles

I would urge any adult who didn’t have chickenpox as a child to get vaccinated against shingles.

RantzNotBantz · 03/08/2025 18:37

I had chickenpox as a child, but was found in early pregnancy to be not carrying antibodies.

Really selfish irresponsible behaviour.
