Misgendered a dog.....πŸ•πŸΆπŸΎ

Slightly light hearted but seriously....met a lovely little poodle today. It was tied up outside a shop for quite a while. Made a fuss of it, checked the collar for a name. Digby ❀️ wearing a pink collar and little harness. Owner eventually came back and I complimented her on her lovely little girl. Turned out it was a boy...... why put it in a pink harness and collar!!! She was not very happy πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Well, as far as pink is for girls, Digby is for boys so I’d probably have gone with the stereotypes associated with the name rather than the fashions.

shellyleppard · 01/08/2025 18:28

@LottieMary fair enough.... I just saw pink and assumed a girl πŸ₯΄ lovely little dog though

The owner sounds like a right idiot if she got annoyed about that!

Numbersarefun · 01/08/2025 18:33

Most people I meet think my dog is a girl; not because he wears any particular colour, but because he’s pretty. He does have a name which could be male or female. I just say, yes he’s handsome isn’t he?

Whiningatwine · 01/08/2025 18:37

I match my dogs lead to what I am wearing if we're going somewhere smart.

Gnarab24 · 01/08/2025 18:40

Hahah, our dog had a pink harness because he’s a dog and who cares. People would often call him a she, I couldn’t care less and he can’t understand English so neither does he.
YANBU

LittlleMy · 01/08/2025 18:51

I mean, you’re never going to see that person again so it really doesn’t matter if you call a he a she or vice versa as the main thing is they’re just communicating a compliment so you just nod and say thank you! The owner sounds v uptight indeed!

Yetmorewifework · 01/08/2025 18:56

Our dog was forever being mistaken for being a girl when he was younger. We just found it funny. Nothing to do with the colour of his collar, everything to do with him looking cute and quite little for his breed.

Noshadelamp · 01/08/2025 18:58

Our dog was very pretty and often mistaken for a girl. My dd used to put pink bandanas and collars on him as well.

It's a dog, no big deal!

Tarkan · 01/08/2025 18:59

I was once pushing my toddler in a pink buggy wearing pink clothing and an old man said I had a lovely little boy. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€£

UnderCoverB0ss · 01/08/2025 18:59

I’d think Digby would be a boy regardless of the colour of the collar. One of my dogs has a purple collar and the other’s is orange. What are they? Dogs or bitches?

TammySue · 01/08/2025 19:03

Another owner of a boy dog dressed in pink and purple (fashion choices are made by the 5 year old).
The 3 year old has taken to calling the whole family girls β€˜come on girls’ so the poor pup has no chance.

Purplecatshopaholic · 01/08/2025 19:03

I didn’t do it consciously, but my girl dogs have pink collars, and one of my boys has blue. The other boy dog has purple! Can’t remember why..

Lionness5 · 01/08/2025 19:06

Well Digby is clearly a boys name.

Mine is a girl and is so pretty but sometimes gets called a boy, even when wearing a lilac harness. She also has a navy one but I just correct people.

Lionness5 · 01/08/2025 19:07

Don't be daft. Pink can be worn by boys and men as well.

AdaColeman · 01/08/2025 19:08

If only you'd asked Digby what his pronouns were @shellyleppard, then you would have known! 🐩 🐩 🐩 😜 😜

Most people I meet think my dog is a girl; not because he wears any particular colour, but because he’s pretty. He does have a name which could be male or female. I just say, yes he’s handsome isn’t he?

People assume our male dog is a female quite frequently. I remember one woman being amazed when I corrected her, saying that he was far too pretty to be a boy dog! πŸ˜…

TBF, I always assume that schnauzers are male. With their eyebrows and moustache/beard combo, they always look like stern Victorian gentlemen to me.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 01/08/2025 19:15

Our dog wears black collar, harness and lead. Everybody always assumes she's male because of her size.

Mochudubh · 01/08/2025 19:16

Maybe Digby is non-binary.

Seriously, unless you have a look round the back it's not always obvious. I like to think I'm good at guessing the sex of breeds I'm familiar with, Collies and GSDs from their faces but even I misgendered my neighbours' GSD which is built like a brick shithouse but turned out to be female.

A lot of people seem to default to male pronouns for dogs and female for cats for some reason, so my bitch is misgendered more often than not. Often I let it go but if it's someone I'm likely to meet again I just give a breezy "She's a her but thanks anyway".

Getting annoyed about it is nuts.

@CoubousAndTourmalet Are you my neighbour?

Miyagi99 · 01/08/2025 19:25

People always assume my dog is a boy, even going so far as to check she hasn’t got balls because they don’t believe me!

whistlesandbells · 01/08/2025 19:27

Not a fuck would I give. Forget.

LadyCankleOfGrantham · 01/08/2025 19:27

I’ve just been away with family and spent a week misgendering a relative's new puppy who they've given a v feminine name for a male dog

CoubousAndTourmalet · 01/08/2025 19:29

No, @Mochudubh . My girl is considerably larger than a GSD, hence everyone assuming she's male. Because apparently all ginormous dogs are male 😏

OverlyFragrant · 01/08/2025 19:29

My obviously male staffordshire bull terrier used to rock a neon pink lead and turquoise collar.
I loved the combo against his fur.

So many men would take offence on behalf of the dog. No idea why their masculinity felt threatened by a dog lead but there we go.

I do find this whole situation, OP and the owner a bit bizarre placing sexist gender norms on animals.

MrsGaryKemp · 01/08/2025 19:34

People often gets ours wrong, she generally wears red and her name could be used for male or female I guess.
If someone says something like β€˜oh he’s gorgeous, how old is he?’ I do tend to say β€˜she’s around 3’ Most people apologise but I make light of it and say she identifies as a dog!
