Nurses pay rise

Greenfood · 31/07/2025 17:22

I've seen today that the nurses have said their pay rise is not acceptable.

I just feel think they're being unreasonable. They have great sick pay, holiday pay, maternity pay etc.

Plus anecdotal evidence shows they are not caring, they sit at the desk not snowed under.

Am I being unreasonable to think the public are not behind them and they're wasting their time?

OP posts:
Doyouthinktheyknow · 31/07/2025 18:03

WTF!

You are entitled to think the payrise is plenty but what’s with the bullshit about nurses not caring, sitting at desks and not doing much😡

I’m amazed you haven’t done your training if that’s what you believe it is!

I’m obviously the wrong kind of nurse because that’s not been my experience of the last 24 years at all.

TennisWithDeborah · 31/07/2025 18:05

I am not a nurse, but in my opinion the pay rise doesn’t seem adequate tbh.

I also think that carers should be better paid. I agree with that.

So sick of nurses making out like they have the hardest job in the world, but this is a new low even for them, to stand on carers to give themselves a boost. Their superiority and great importance is not anything to do with patient care, any sort of valuable skillset, or anything else (because deep down they know they're not actually doing any of that most of the time and leave it to carers and HCAs). It's all about the bloody PIN. 🙄
We all know who really looks after us and our relatives on the wards. Can't see a nurse for dust in most hospitals, they just sit chatting on desks while doctors and carers do the proper work.

This poster was defending nurses after deliberate provocation from the OP.

Having spent much more time than I would like in hospital over the last year the nurses AND the HCAs have all been great. Without exception.

Like all jobs there will be some poor ones but I doubt many are doing it just for the PIN.

mmsnet · 31/07/2025 18:09

Nurses dont get paid enough

Carers dont get paid enough

Simples

Dont like your job then change it otherwise stfu

Im not a NURSE anymore I was pointing out that although carers are invaluable they are not accountable to the NMC like nurses are if a nurse loses their PIN they can't work so yeah it's pretty important if a carer makes a mistake at work they ate only accountable for their own actions the nurse is supposed to supervise the untrained staff as well as doing their own job.

Howilivenow2 · 31/07/2025 18:14

I dont know, i am torn. Nurses do an incredibly hard job but it feels a bit unfair. The pay rise nurses have been offered is 3.6%, the pay rise social workers have been offered and had to accept is 3.2%. As a social worker I'd argue that we do an equally difficult job but our pay rise is less and then nurses are declining the 3.6% pay rise. I think the answer would be to offer both a higher pay rise otherwise it just creates a discrepancy.

Are social workers better paid than nurses generally?

Worst attempt at goading ever.

You called it @PeriJane - not worth responding to the OP with such a stupid proposition.

You're right, I'm a senior carer in a nursing home. Similar though

They might do in a care home but not in the NHS lol

You sound like you don’t have a clue and also you sound like you have an awful chip on your shoulder.

solando · 31/07/2025 18:51

People aren't very nice towards carers.

If its so similar, go and do your training for three years and be a qualified nurse.

There's four branches to choose from and further specialisms in each.

Absolutely not knocking what others do in the care profession but don't assume to know what nurses do. We don't just work in general hospitals and nursing homes.

Totally different jobs. If you want nurses pay,(and the rise) train as a nurse 🤷‍♂️

ChaiLarious · 31/07/2025 19:01

SheSmellsSeaShells · 31/07/2025 17:32

Carers get a really shit deal. Why don’t carers go on strike for better pay and conditions? It’s not a race to the bottom, nurses are highly qualified and deserve more. It’s awful that the government give different pay rises to different groups of public sector employees just to stir up problems.

Carers aren't usually public sector employees though. They are employed by privately owned companies who can set their own rates of pay.

Nurses who work in carehomes are employed by privately owned companies too, the pay, sick pay, holidays, mat leave and pension are nothing like in the NHS, there's usually one nurse for 26 residents where I worked, it's not easy. Carers in the private sector can work as hca in the public or charity sectors, band 3 and 4 hca are senior.

I have the upmost respect for care staff and I whole heartedly think that a ward could not run without all of its staff members.

All professions unfortunately have their shit staff sadly, carers and nurses but its unfair to tar all with the same brush

Nurses have a vital role on a ward
Care staff have a vital role on a ward

Each profession have their own skills

Its not a competition and I agree care staff deserve a wage increase but I also think nurses do and the current pay rise specifically concerns nurses

Bushmillsbabe · 31/07/2025 19:22

I think the pay is fairly reasonable, after 6 years I was on band 7, which in outer London where I work is over 60k, not a fortune, and well deserved, but decent.
It's a bit different though for 9 to 5 staff, of which I am one, working in the commuinity, to hospital staff working night shifts which I think it tougher.

The biggest issue is that these pay rises aren't fully funded, so my team will need to cut staff to balance the budget, which reduces patient care quality, increases stress.

The comments about all sitting round though are ridiculous.

Not similar.
They could do your job , you couldn’t do theirs.
Nurses on wards are absolutely run ragged.
If one goes off sick they are not replaced.

The pension is good but it’s not free.
You say ‘anecdotally’ sitting at desks ?
When’s the last time you saw nurses sitting around ?

beautyqueeen · 31/07/2025 19:30

Being a carer is not remotely comparable to being a registered nurse 🤦🏽‍♀️

lunar1 · 31/07/2025 19:38

I’m at risk of a pressure sore from all the sitting around I do, I do think we should be compensated for having to speak up over the sound of buzzers, especially the arrest one, it’s hard on the ears trying to Ignore that one!!

Persephoneofhell · 31/07/2025 19:49

Greenfood · 31/07/2025 17:24

Not goady, just feel they get enough whereas us in the care sector get overlooked time and time again. It's frustrating

So you do not have the qualifications or the responsibility a nurse has? So you see a snapshot of the responsibility make a judgement without any real idea?
Are you aware nurses are a degree profession and specialist nurse often have master's degrees? They can often prescribe and plan care complete complex procedures and deal with complex situations. Have to take on safeguarding caseloads and deal with all the grief, upset, angry and dangerous people as the frontline? As a carer you can direct the angry relative straight to the sister! They then have to deal with it!
They are actually underpaid for level of education and responsibilities.
So sitting at the desk dealing with the admin side is unacceptable to you? Do you do complex calculations at 3am in emergency situations for medication/infusions on tiny babies, critically ill patients ect ? Or would that be the doctor's and nurses sitting at that desk separately doing those calculations to ensure that is accurate and safe. I guess a quick glance does see them drinking a coffee whilst trying to calmly work out those calculations?
Yes carers should be paid more also. But you are not helping yourself by complaining about nurses or doctors!

Bananapants5 · 31/07/2025 19:56

RubySquid · 31/07/2025 20:02

x2boys · 31/07/2025 17:28

Yes every single nurse is uncaring 🙄🙄🙄
As for sitting at desks ,when I was a nurse I couldn't get away from the sodding desk with the huge amount of paperwork,to do if it's not documented it didn't happen we were often told.

Too much paperwork and no time for the patients it seems.

What used to annoy me during a month long stay at the hospital were the nurses chatting and laughing at the desk all night and patients call bells going ananswered

Whaleandsnail6 · 31/07/2025 20:03

I see that you still haven't been back op to explain why, if its so easy, you have been too lazy to train to be a nurse?!!

You are so clearly jealous of nurses, join them.
