Podcasts are Annoying

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 14:23

Its just radio 📻 😌
Don't get me started on every celeb and his dog starting one.
Also I assume most of them wouldn't make much money from doing it?
It's just a hobby. Some have so few listeners.
BBC Sounds are happy though to toss money at literally any Z list celeb to make one.
To think I used to admire the BBC compared to ITV etc..

There are some brilliant podcasts out there on all sorts of subjects. I listen to social history and crime ones mainly, and learnt all sorts of things. Some of the best ones have been those that aren't BBC, but from other producers, such as Wondery. Particular standouts were a short series on Hurricane Katrina from the point of view of people living in New Orleans, and one about Curtis Flowers, wrongly convicted for a triple murder and who spent 20 years on death row. I watch a lot of documentaries on tv, so podasts are the same, just a different format, for me!
I hate celeb podcasts, but I also wouldn't watch things like Love Island or MAFSUK either.... you like what you like...

pinkbackground · 31/07/2025 18:21

There are lots of really good quality podcasts out there.

The good ones annoy me because I want to consume the information and discussion but not by listening. I would rather read a transcript, which would take me 5 minutes rather than an hour. I don't have an hour! I miss blogs. I'm disappointed in the world for preferring listening to reading.

Have you checked your favourites don’t have transcripts? Some of the pods I listen to do - there’s usually a link in the show notes.

Yes there are a few and I'm appreciative of them! But not par for the course yet.

Moveoverdarlin · 31/07/2025 18:27

That’s like saying films are crap, or food is shit. Ot depends what you listen to. I listen to really insightful podcasts. If you’re going to actively listen to the Loose Women podcast yeah, it’ll be shit, but I listen to true crime stuff, archives from Desert Island discs, I find podcasts where my favourite comedians are interviewed.

bostonchamps · 31/07/2025 18:32

Is everyone okay today?

First people drinking water was 'performative' and now podcasts, something you literally do not have to engage with unless you choose to, are 'annoying'.

And I thought I was in a bad mood...

CurlewKate · 31/07/2025 18:33

The annoying ones are annoying. The not annoying ones are not annoying. HTH

BertieBotts · 31/07/2025 18:35

Who is tying you down and blasting them at you? They sound annoying.

I like podcasts but considering the pod part of the name originally came from ipod - they're meant to be consumed individually. Or, you know, not.

I do find it annoying when a podcast maker thinks they are on a radio show and does any or all of the following:

Has a pointlessly long intro explaining what their podcast is and what they are going to talk about. Just fucking talk about it then! If I've got this far I've probably read the description!

Instructs people to "stay tuned" Hmm

Keeps interrupting the flow to recap what's already been said and summarise what's coming up. Again. Nobody is starting from halfway through! This is especially annoying if it bulks out 15 mins of content to half an hour or so. Just a waste of my time. Have a short podcast and cut the waffle, or a long one where you actually get to the interesting part of the conversation.

And then my last pet peeve is boring and completely irrelevant segments like you'll have an interesting podcast and then randomly they'll have a segment where they review a biscuit recipe of the week or something. I don't care! If I wanted to listen to a podcast about recipes, I'd look for that.

I find substack is good for reading. I like reading but I like podcasts as well. A transcript is never as good as a properly written article. I'd rather listen to it in that case.

BertieBotts · 31/07/2025 18:40

The name comes from pod as in ipod + cast as in broadcast.

The idea originally was that it was a sort of personalised radio show you could download and listen to with your music that you had on iTunes.

Of course now they are on whatever platform you like, not just iTunes.

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 19:02

The advertising of them annoy me. It is hard to avoid completely.
But the celeb ones are really really bad.
Sad that they have to be so rubbish.
Everything about the celebs in their little set up with microphones and setting. Is annoying.
Sorry its a podcast. Which will never be as good as a Live TV celeb culture TV programme.
They think they are so special. All they are doing it jumping on the bandwagon.

Seriously op, there are thousands of podcasts on a huge range of topics. Most not presented by celebs. If you don't like one type there are so many more to choose from. It's not complicated.

OddBoots · 31/07/2025 19:30

I don't listen to the celeb ones as they have never appealed to me but podcasts are a bit like social media in that you need to curate your own feed of what you like.

I have a couple I listen to every weekend (Hard Fork and This Week in Virology) and loads from which I pick and choose episodes depending on my mood (Everything Electric, Outrage and Optimism, Mind Pump, Meaningful Money, Freakonomics, Good life Project, Hidden Brain, Zoe, Daily Stoic, Throughline, Code Switch, Sideways ... among many others)

I listen to a lot of audiobooks from the free library apps but a podcast that matches my mood really makes a walk to or from work go so well.

Pickingmyselfup · 31/07/2025 19:33

I love a podcast. I listen to ones from Mr Ballen, The Running Channel, Unsolved mysteries and Conspiracy theories with the occasional one about plane crashes. Some are thought provoking, some I can relate to and take advice from and some are just sheer entertainment.

I listen to them when I'm in bed as something to drift off to sleep to to stop my mind from going round in circles or for a slow boring run. Great for decorating also!!

I'm not keen on audio books, I don't want to be told a story word by word, I want to listen to someone describing a story to me if that makes sense.

I don't like them so don't listen to them, they do seem to be a thing nowadays though

autienotnaughty · 02/08/2025 07:06

Out of the million or so podcasts out there I love about 5 of them and like about 10. They are like a non live radio and you know the topic in advance. Listen to something if you want, don’t bother if you don’t.

fruitpastille · 02/08/2025 07:11

I quite like some but I hate the choosing part. I wish there was a podcast radio channel which just played different ones through the day. You would come across new things that you might never have heard about. I like being able to turn on the radio with one click and just listen to whatever is on.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/08/2025 10:15

As the guilty feminist podcast once said podcasts are radio that no one stops you making.

It's basically Netflix for radio. I love them.

Most of your posts out the going ons…. Of Love Island. Quality stuff there OP 😆

This poster is very bitter and offensive about everything it seems.

She’s constantly slagging Love Island on those threads as well, despite watching it. It’s bizarre 😂😂

I think of them as more YouTube for radio. I love podcasts (and also YouTube, incidentally) for the ease of being able to listen to (and watch) only things that appeal to me, on subjects I am interested in. Shortform media is best for me with my menopausal attention span and I am sometimes guilty of watching a podcast on YouTube in a weird 'best/worst of both worlds' way.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/08/2025 10:27

When I used to tell people I listened to radio 4 and 5live Non-stop they’d look at me like I’d just stepped out of the Victorian age.

Now everyone listens to podcasts. Pretty much the same.

I’d Say the difference now is that radio is live and podcasts are recorded. I know lots of radio shows are recorded but they are all on the podcast platforms and that you can listen back to live shows once they’re finished but that’s the only difference I can see.
