Podcasts are Annoying

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 14:23

Its just radio 📻 😌
Don't get me started on every celeb and his dog starting one.
Also I assume most of them wouldn't make much money from doing it?
It's just a hobby. Some have so few listeners.
BBC Sounds are happy though to toss money at literally any Z list celeb to make one.
To think I used to admire the BBC compared to ITV etc..

YABU

Switch stuff off / scroll on if you dont like it.

Podcasts are amazing. Its nothing like radio. Swearing is allowed for a start.

TerrierCollector · 31/07/2025 15:39

You’re listening to the wrong ones. Obviously podcasts by Z-list celebs are going to be a bit crap. The best podcasts are those by experts in their field or interring friends who have a laugh and do good research on whatever it is they’re talking about. I find the celeb pods mostly a miss.

I’ve never understood podcasts.

I also think is it not just radio?

I feel very naive, but what is the name about? Was it originally something to do with iPods? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I’ve never listened to one because if I have any free time I would prefer to watch tv. My mind would wander if it was just audio.

What about when you are driving, at the gym, cleaning the house, having a root canal etc?

PurpleChrayn · 31/07/2025 15:45

It’s a different medium from radio.

That’s like saying “books are just newspapers” because they both contain words.

JaneGrint · 31/07/2025 15:53

There’s loads of podcasts covering loads of different topics out there. And it’s not all BBC Sounds, there’s plenty of others making podcasts.

Some podcasts are great, some podcasts are annoying.

YABU to say they’re all annoying.
Unless you find all audio annoying, then you’re probably just listening to the wrong ones or not taking the time to find podcasts about your personal interests.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 31/07/2025 16:02

I've been listening to some good stuff on BBC sounds this week.
True crime/scams are my favourite, but they are more of a documentary format.

I don't like the '2 randomers in a televised booth contemplating their own navel stuff' .
Katie Price/Lilly Allen/Meghan Mark Le-"Sussex" bollocks

Clychaugog · 31/07/2025 16:09

Love a good podcast, me!

Been enjoying Steven Bartlett's D.O.A.C... especially the neuroscience-y stuff.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 31/07/2025 16:09

I find Love Island and Mrs Brown’s Boys annoying, so I don’t watch.

Easy solution there. Hope this helps.

And nor do you dismiss ALL Tv as “so annoying”

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 16:31

I much prefer live radio. Can't stand overly edited/ produced segments.

There’s lots and lots of podcasts that are not edited at all or minimally edited

Not all podcasts are overly edited or even edited at all though.

coffeeagogo · 31/07/2025 16:48

god I love a podcasts and listen to a huge variety across loads of subjects as I walk the dog. So YABU

MinnieMountain · 31/07/2025 16:54

Podcasts mean I can listen to what I want, when I want. I love Radio 4 but my favourite programmes aren’t always on at a time that suits me.

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 16:57

People seem to like them, just cos they are popular..

No different to TV shows, music, anything really. Lots of crap things are hyped up.

TerrierCollector · 31/07/2025 17:06

Personally, I don’t like them because they’re popular but rather because they’re the only medium that has lots of new content on subjects I’m interested in. TV and radio rarely covers niche topics in any depth.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 31/07/2025 17:06

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 16:57

Or are they popular because people like them…?

TaborlinTheGreat · 31/07/2025 17:09

Aquarius1234 · 31/07/2025 16:57

Well... no. Lots of podcasts aren't popular, as you pointed out in your OP. Some of the good ones become popular, and people like those ones because they are good. Nobody 'likes all podcasts because they are popular'. People like podcasts that are about things they are interested in.

Honestly, try applying your points to other forms of media and it will become obvious that they don't make sense.

bumblingbovine49 · 31/07/2025 17:10

It is basically radio. I listen to a lot of things on radio 4 on catch up. I've never understood how podcasts not just a cheaper version of radio. A bit like pirate radio stations but not illegal because you don't have to pay so there is a nothing illegal about it

Enrichetta · 31/07/2025 17:13

I gave up on the Today programme a long time ago. These days I much prefer The News Agents and the various The Rest is Politics podcasts to other analytical news programmes.

Right. Was also going to say you can watch podcasts on YouTube.
But you can often do that with radio. But its definitely a thing which is interesting to see people in the studio. But I prefer that if its live.

I listen to podcasts at the gym on psychology, history and true crime. Love that I can time my workout to them as well and you get what you expect with little distraction unlike radio.
I wouldn’t listen to celeb podcasts, just like I don’t watch reality tv. It’s not for me. Each to their own.

gannett · 31/07/2025 18:12

The good ones annoy me because I want to consume the information and discussion but not by listening. I would rather read a transcript, which would take me 5 minutes rather than an hour. I don't have an hour! I miss blogs. I'm disappointed in the world for preferring listening to reading.
