AIBU to be surprised this was advertised at 12pm today?

One of DC had a sleepover with two of their friends last night at our house. Everything went fine and this afternoon I said they could watch a film before the others were picked up. We came back from going for a walk and I said they could start to look at kids films whilst I prepare lunch. I turned on the TV which automatically goes to the freebies channel set up before I press the button for SKY. On the main screen was ‘Adventures of a taxi driver’ with a cartoon woman bent over leaning into a taxi showing her bottom and underwear.

AIBU to be a bit surprised to see that in the middle of the day this is what’s being advertised? Didn’t say anything to the children but when the parents came to pick their children up they were surprised to see that being advertised too. I’d never heard of it but looked it up and it’s a raunchy 70s film.

It's fine.

Ohmych · 30/07/2025 17:05

They'll see the same at the swimming pool. How old are the children?

anniegun · 30/07/2025 17:08

The films that you will see advertised are related to your viewing habits. Algorithms place the ads according to likely appeal

They are 7/8 years old. At the swimming pool people tend to be in swimming costumes there’s is a difference. Sometimes there are some people that are in very revealing outfits but they don’t tend to be around at children’s swim times.

This film isn’t about swimming pools.

This is on something called LG channel we don’t watch it it’s part of freeview or whatever the free channels are called. I wish we could get the free channels but the signal is shocking here so we pay for Sky and have SKY Q.

Are they old enough to understand what someone dressed like that might be doing or what a film like that might be about or involve?

I'd be surprised - therefore the context does not matter, it isn't more than they would see at the pool or on the beach and if its ok there, it's ok here.

Films on demand are not advertised according to time of day - if thats an issue for you, don't let your kids flick through films to choose.

Smallchangebigstep · 30/07/2025 17:17

Well I don't think it's appropriate to advertise a film like that during childrens tv viewing hours.
1970s smut with dated attitudes to women weren't funny then and are even less so today.
It was given an X rating when it was released and I know attitudes have changed but I wouldnt want young children to see it.

It's one of the carryon movies isn't it, if so its a pg and can be advertised at anytime of the day

dynamiccactus · 30/07/2025 17:23

I am not sure it should be appearing during the daytime. Something like that should be reserved for post watershed times. It's poor scheduling

You could write to the ASA OP, they will either look at it or refer it to Ofcom.

anniegun · 30/07/2025 17:26

It has a 15 rating by the BBFC so hardly the worst thing on tv

No, as OP said, it's a 1970s sex comedy but not a Carry On. It's an 18 classification

I don’t know if it’s a carry on I watched them when I was younger and I don’t remember this one it says it’s a 15 rating.

When we were watching premier league football at lunchtime there were adverts for viagra and I am sure referencing carrots for penis! Indeed I think viagra or something similar is on sports channels ALL the time.

that said have you set it up for children are there settings to just show child suitable stuff I am not sure they have a watershed in the same way

BallerinaRadio · 30/07/2025 17:59

I wouldn't worry too much about it Mrs Lovejoy

They were not flicking through films, I put the tv on and set up the section for children’s films so they could have a look there is also a pin no. to put in…I can also see what they would be flicking through as we have an indoor camera for the dog which rotates around the room. They decided to pick an old cartoon film that we had in our DVD collection in the end.

We talk to our children about appropriate dress and my child loves to wear her shorts under dresses as she loves to do cartwheels etc. She chose to do this as she didn’t feel comfortable with the boys being able to see up her skirt. This was after they did the pants talk at school etc which is fine by us. At the beach we talk to them about swimming costumes and some children might be fully unclothed but that is up to their parents. I tell them about the importance of covering up on the beach for sun protection and wearing suncream etc. This is due to one of our friends developing skin cancer. At the swimming pool my child wears a full swimsuit but that is her choice. She chose this due to the sparkles etc and my son wears his swim shorts and sun top again their choice.

We talk about dressing appropriately in situations such as weddings, funerals etc so she understands what isn’t appropriate such as wearing my high heeled shoes for dress up…that is how I and DH was brought up and so far there’s been no issues about clothing. Kids this age are like sponges they pick up everything and I simply don’t think that is appropriate for advertising on daytime TV.

ginasevern · 30/07/2025 18:12

So it was just the advert for the film, not the film itself? And it was just the picture you've posted? Honestly OP, get a grip. I understand the dated attitudes to women angle but really how much of that reference are 8 year olds going to absorb (let alone be scarred for life) from one screen shot. As for teaching them appropriate dressing, that's obviously great, but they are going to see teenagers with their arses hanging out and god knows what else just on the streets. You can't "protect" them from every sight of a woman wearing a mini skirt or a thong at the beach.

Pretty sure the other stuff it's advertising also wasn't child friendly because of violence and swearing but you won't show that...

It's a streaming channel so children's viewing hours are irrelevant - it's down to parents to control what their kids can access on the TV.

The Adventures Of/Confessions Of films were kind of soft core porn films. There was a Windcleaner one as well from what I know

I think the picture for this, however, is tamer than that of those for Carry On films. Which are regularly on the telly during the day

MissAvainthesun · 30/07/2025 18:18

For those that are NOT reading my first
post when we switch on our tv it goes
to the freeview section first and then we press the sky button for sky to come on.
