AIBU to be surprised this was advertised at 12pm today?

One of DC had a sleepover with two of their friends last night at our house. Everything went fine and this afternoon I said they could watch a film before the others were picked up. We came back from going for a walk and I said they could start to look at kids films whilst I prepare lunch. I turned on the TV which automatically goes to the freebies channel set up before I press the button for SKY. On the main screen was ‘Adventures of a taxi driver’ with a cartoon woman bent over leaning into a taxi showing her bottom and underwear.

AIBU to be a bit surprised to see that in the middle of the day this is what’s being advertised? Didn’t say anything to the children but when the parents came to pick their children up they were surprised to see that being advertised too. I’d never heard of it but looked it up and it’s a raunchy 70s film.

In the 1980s if you looked up to the top shelf in your average newsagents you’d see a row of much racier pictures than that!

Wtf are you talking about??! NOW as in present day.

The fact it's an advert for an old film but your acting like it's some moral indictment of today

Not reality shows, but lots of "saucy" sexist stuff a la Benny Hill and Hee Haw, buxom farmgirls, daytime sitcoms and cop shows regularly making jokes about prostitutes and gay people, cinemas showing soft porn films (from Sweden!) with posters outside, adverts for strip bars ... It was a funny time when a lot of smut got aired in the name of being liberal and open minded. Even in an ordinary comedy like The Life of Brian, a naked woman pops up for basically no reason. (Admittedly not a kids' film, but not an "adult film" either.)

Anyway, my point is that while it didn't do us kids any good, it didn't really harm us, either, and I think the OP's kids will be OK.

There are naked men in Life of Brian too tbf

Yes but that’s ‘classic art’ in a gallery and have no issue with that or the children seeing it and when the children have asked why they don’t have clothes on we explain back then that’s how some people modelled for paintings etc.

This was 70s smut depicting women not very nicely.

Fair point on the postcard comment. Although I haven’t seen a postcard like that for a very long time…early 90s Blackpool I think was the last time.

So nudity is ok when you judge is "classic" and can blame the long gone past?

But you can't say "Oh that was the 70s, we had a different attitude then" to a slightly sexy picture of a woman bending over?

It's really nothing too "not very nice". As someone said, you'll see just as much walking down the street

And you do get a few of those postcards still too

Very true…I remember my brother and male cousins getting a clip round the ear from my Uncle when they tried to sneak a peak at Sam Fox and Linda Lusardi then after a few years they started covering them over now when I go to a Newsagents you don’t tend see those magazines (well not in my local newsagents it’s usually gossip mags, recipe mags and daylight robbery kids magazines with some sort of monthly collectors item at extortionate prices) it’s usually with some scantily clad celebrity coming out of a club worse for wear 🤣

Again if not keen just tend to scroll on past to a magazine I like.

@UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld I’m really not understanding what your problem is? I simply don’t want my daughter or son dressing inappropriately. We all judge unfortunately in every situation consciously or subconsciously. I want my children to be aware of what is and isn’t appropriate and that feeds into what they wear at certain times, what they say, how they say etc. As they grow older they will hopefully make the right choices. It is mine and DH job to guide and protect them obviously I can’t protect them from everything as that would do more harm than good.

I was surprised that’s all as I’m not used to seeing raunchy stuff being advertised on daytime TV. Yes I am one of the people who thinks there’s a time and a place. I don’t like going to town on a weekend on an evening or the local after a certain time as people get rowdy, loud, swear etc but that’s just the way it is so we choose carefully where we go and if it can’t be helped then it can’t be helped.

All I want is for my children to remain innocent curious and young minded for that little bit longer which I don’t think is a bad thing.

Couldn’t get worked up about this if I tried. It’s not exactly an explicit image. Most kids wouldn’t think anything of it. Streaming sites don’t have time constraints placed on what they can show so you need to police them yourself if it upsets you.

BIossomtoes · 31/07/2025 15:16

I don’t think their innocence would compromised by seeing a woman bending over in a short skirt.

Yes I am aware now that streaming doesn’t have time constraints like many of the previous posters have already said.

LG isn't on Freeview.
But also you weren't on a TV station you were on the home screen for your app and what you see will be linked to your profile which I assume is set as an adult. There isn't a watershed for what is advertised on a home screen.

But why do you think that image would cause them to lose their innocence?

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 31/07/2025 15:42

It's hypocritical to say "Oh they can see nudity in a museum because we'll just say it's old" and "they can't see a fairly tame drawing of something they might even see in real life"

There's no nudity, no sex, just a vaguely suggestive pose

I've not told you anything about hownyou dress your children. You've decided to add that little bit in yourself

It's one of the carryon movies isn't it, if so its a pg and can be advertised at anytime of the day

Well it’s not a Carry on is it? It’s one of the Adventures of movies that starred Barry Evans. It’s a seaside postcard movie.
OP- Do you never see inappropriate things at those seaside shops? Or Fairs? Cock on a stick type things?
Just say “that’s a silly old fashioned things for grown ups”.

SharpLily · 31/07/2025 18:38

Apparently there are people out there who edit some films so their children can watch them without being corrupted by sexy scenes. They don't do the same with the violence. It seems sex is bad but violence is not.

LlynTegid · 31/07/2025 18:41

I agree with the OP, indeed any film that had a 15 or 18 certificate should not be advertised on tv in the daytime.

Same applies to Frankie Boyle's show if it ever comes back, and Mrs Brown's Boys.

True! I'd forgotten. Weirdly it seems less shocking, even though when I first saw it at 14 I was very unfamiliar with men's dangly bits. Clearly it didn't scar me for life ...

Can you or someone else tell me where it says adult profile/child profile? We don’t ever use it so I’d like to alter the settings if possible.

I don’t want my children watching overly violent things either. Sex and violence is unavoidable as it’s everywhere on and off TV we just try to be wary and limit what our children see.

I’ll be honest no we haven’t the last few times we’ve been to the beach. The kids prefer to get donuts and go on the coin machines and the odd ride. They prefer to just play on the beach as long as they can than go to the shops.

When my children have seen things that are for grown up’s (like the invitation to a friends hen party that had a giant co*k on the front) I have said exactly what you have said. I and DH do know what to say to my children in these circumstances I have had them for the last 6 and 8 years.

So out of interest would you be happy if that image was up on a wall in a classroom? Primary or Secondary?

Why would it be up on a classroom wall?

It would depend on the class tbh

An art class or history class or film class? Ye, it would be fine at secondary

Maths? I'd be confused if this or the Mona Lisa or Saturn Eating His Son etc was up

And primary tends to have very different pictures

You’ve virtually said this image is fine anywhere so just wanted to see what you thought about it being up in schools.

I have just asked a Primary Teacher friend and the image would be deemed inappropriate in his school regardless of year group.

Secondary teacher friends have said it could be used in an Art, Drama, PSHE Y9 and above, or A Level lesson depending on subject, relevance and discussion before used but not something that would just ‘be there’.
