AIBU to be surprised this was advertised at 12pm today?

One of DC had a sleepover with two of their friends last night at our house. Everything went fine and this afternoon I said they could watch a film before the others were picked up. We came back from going for a walk and I said they could start to look at kids films whilst I prepare lunch. I turned on the TV which automatically goes to the freebies channel set up before I press the button for SKY. On the main screen was ‘Adventures of a taxi driver’ with a cartoon woman bent over leaning into a taxi showing her bottom and underwear.

AIBU to be a bit surprised to see that in the middle of the day this is what’s being advertised? Didn’t say anything to the children but when the parents came to pick their children up they were surprised to see that being advertised too. I’d never heard of it but looked it up and it’s a raunchy 70s film.

I don’t understand the Lovejoy comment.

the simpsons helen GIF

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 30/07/2025 18:20

But honestly, this is like complaining that when you put Netflix on, not the kids section, it has adult shows...

The preacher's small minded and moralistic wife in the Simpsons I presume. Google her.

O I see I know Lovejoy as the programme with Ian McShane.

It's one of the carryon movies isn't it, if so its a pg and can be advertised at anytime of the day

Adventures of a taxi driver
Carry on cabby
two different films

For those that are NOT reading my first
post when we switch on our tv it goes
to the freeview section first and then we press the sky button for sky to come on.

So set up your TV differently so the LG channels don't show automatically.

Unicornsandprincesses · 30/07/2025 18:21

Our tv is like this, it’s literally there as you turn it on. It’s nothing to do with the paid services we use (Netflix etc) and we’ve never watched anything on those free channels. You can’t set up kids profiles.

its just THERE. I too have noticed the adverts this and similar films - my two are a bit young to care right now but I wasn’t massively happy either & thought I might look for a way to hide it or remove it

Wouldn’t mind if it actually showed me things i want to watch on channels I subscribe to!!

So it was just the advert for the film, not the film itself? And it was just the picture you've posted? Honestly OP, get a grip. I understand the dated attitudes to women angle but really how much of that reference are 8 year olds going to absorb (let alone be scarred for life) from one screen shot. As for teaching them appropriate dressing, that's obviously great, but they are going to see teenagers with their arses hanging out and god knows what else just on the streets. You can't "protect" them from every sight of a woman wearing a mini skirt or a thong at the beach.

I don’t think of it as my child being scarred for life…we talk to our children about naked bodies, all shapes and sizes
and nothing to be ashamed of etc. There’s plenty of things advertised during the day I don’t think are appropriate but usually the kids are at school.

Anyway I and the other parents at pick up felt it was abit inappropriate but the mum of one of the other children thought it was ok.

Unfortunately you can’t do that like another poster has posted it’s just there.

You can - I have an LG TV as well, and you can change your homescreen around to show different things if you look in the safety settings.

No it's not a Carry On film.

The films that you will see advertised are related to your viewing habits. Algorithms place the ads according to likely appeal

Yet again I find myself wishing the laugh reaction was still available.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 30/07/2025 18:16

Pretty sure the other stuff it's advertising also wasn't child friendly because of violence and swearing but you won't show that...

We try to avoid stuff like this too, I just don’t want them seeing stuff that’s not age appropriate but understand we live in a time where it’s not always possible.

We do try by setting up profiles and pins but know they will see stuff in and out of home and try to talk to them about if we know about it.

InsanityPolarity · 30/07/2025 18:42

I agree with you op and I avoid this stuff too with my dc. Dh and I used to watch the music channels before dc but we’ve stopped as we don’t want them to think that’s how women are meant to dress and dance.
Viagara adverts are annoying. I don’t want dc asking about those either.
There should be a watershed.

redlightgreenlight123 · 30/07/2025 18:42

You should buy a set of pearls so you can start clutching them.

Entirely irrelevant to your op @MissAvainthesun but there is such a thing as free via satellite. You need free sat

Sky is absolutely not necessary

It's not on the mainstream channels so the watershed doesn't apply. They show what you might be interested in based on your previous viewing. You can set parental controls so children can't view what you don't want them to see. You have to put a pin number in to access anything deemed inappropriate.

? We have it because we want it but also because the signal is terrible we tried the free channels when we first moved here constant freezing or channel not available. It was the first thing we were warned about. We’ve always had SKY so it’s not a massive issue, pretty much everyone is on SKY or Virgin.

Happyrascalsmummy · 30/07/2025 19:11

I agree with you OP. I have an LG tv too and there's another similar one with a plumber featuring a naked woman in the bath and someone bent over with a plunger sticking out of their bottom. I wish could be removed from the homescreen because I really don't think it's appropriate.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 30/07/2025 19:18

😬At least they might get an idea about why some older folks may think the way they do wrt some subjects, ie. as that's what they grew up seeing and hearing...

Where is this setting please can’t seem to find it for the LG TV? As far as I’m aware LG Homescreen can’t be changed?

If it can please can you tell me how? Thanks

Ah yes, yet another one posting in AIBU who, when disagreed with, is quick to state that she definitely isn't being unreasonable.

Best hope they don’t accidentally click on the channel 4 app and see the Bonnie blue doc . My point is this nothing compares to what they could have seen.
