Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

'Acknowledge it'.

How silly. You didn' "educate me".
OBVIOUSLY I know the reason they say that they do it, is to stop paper waste

However when i have said no to receipts, I have seen shops still print the receipts, and then throw the receipts in the bin.

So paper is still being wasted

I’ve experienced this too, to be fair. They’re waving the receipt in your face while they ask if you want it 😅 Their training has gone wrong somehow, if indeed training was provided.

However, your experience in Ireland is not typical OP. Shop assistants here do often ask if you want a receipt (and they mostly haven’t printed it at that stage!) But not all shops do it, so it may depend where you shopped. It’s getting more common though.

I’ve been asked a lot in France too if I want a receipt, it’s not just here

Yes, they nearly always ask in France.

Another Irish person on here said that the practice is starting to "come in" to Ireland.

I personally haven't been asked yet in Ireland, but it will probably start to happen to me.

Im going to Ireland this weekend

It’s been here a fair while, years in my experience, but is becoming more widespread I think.

Bunnybenty · 31/07/2025 18:39

It's funny.

Im on a few threads on mumsnet about much more serious topics, and I haven't received half as much abuse on them, as I have on here, on a thread about receipts.

Conclusion : everyone likes being asked do they want a receipt, and they get very aggressive if the topic is brought up 😂

And before all the aggressive posters start writing the same things again, and telling me again that it is my fault, that i received so much abuse because of my tone or whatever,

blah blah blah.

Save your posts. I am getting off this thread to go and meet friends.

It wasn’t your opinion on receipts that caused you trouble OP. I’d rethink your conclusion 😉

As i already said , I have written in exactly the same style on many other threads, and i have not received abuse to the same extent that I have received on this thread.

I have been called stupid, bonkers and unwell on this thread. My job and intelligence have been insulted multiple times, with posters wtiting "i hope you are not a teacher' That is nasty.

I haven't been called stupid, bonkers, and unwell on other threads.

Why all that over -the -top aggression over a mild moan about receipts?

Its mad and its weird.

You're right that there is a lot of over the top aggression on this thread. You're just not seeing that it is coming primarily from your own posts.

I’ve seen people questioning your job on other threads iirc?
They do often seem to go in much the same way…

Probably for the best this thread winds up now anyway 😅
Enjoy your meet-up OP.

So not from the people that have called me stupid and bonkers then?

Lol you are so one sided and biased, it's funny.

No, no one has questioned my job on other threads. So you remember wrongly.

I haven't even said what my job is on this thread!

I just said that I have to get to school on time in the mornings.

I think because it saves paper if you don't want one. I can't stand the " can I have your email address" I say no now.

I thought that should be the case but in different places the receipts have actually been printed out and the cashier throws them in the bin? Always thought this very strange 😕

Bunnybenty · 31/07/2025 18:24

Because i didnt have to say it in the last two countries that i lived in. So it is not ingrained in my memory.

But it seems to annoy you so I’m surprised you forget.

Bernardo1 · 31/07/2025 19:10

When I buy a lottery ticket at a supermarket, I am bemused to be asked if I want a receipt. I usually say "this will do nicely" holding the receipt.

A number of supermarkets now require you to use a receipt to exit.

DirtyBird · 31/07/2025 19:40

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:56

It can't be that much paper waste. If loads of other countries give a receipt every time.

It is only the UK that I have experienced this in.

It's like this in the US as well. I usually tell them no unless it's something I might need to return. I don't see it as time consuming but I do see that giving a receipt every time, to be thrown away is very wasteful.

MikeRafone · 31/07/2025 19:45

They ask in France if you want the receipt, Its better than printing a tree with of paper that you don't want

Marmiv87 · 31/07/2025 19:54

Are you sure you paid? Maybe your card was declined and they were checking?

I always want a receipt for card payments so I can check my statement at the end of the month - it annoys me when youngsters, including my own, don't get a receipt and then wonder why they've got a letter and charges from the bank for going overdrawn. Also for any returned items it's always useful to have the receipt

fetchacloth · 31/07/2025 20:13

My local Coop doesn't give you a receipt unless you ask for it before the transaction is finished. If I forget to ask beforehand I've been told, sorry too late, and they just blank you and continue serving the customer waiting behind.
I'm unsure whether that's illegal, but it's really rude. 😏

This is the best MN post for a while; OP is clearly needing attention and acting like a child. Her posts are gold!

Oh and OP wasting paper is wasting paper, just because you don’t like being told wasting receipt paper is bad and create your own narrative doesn’t make it any less true! As another lovely poster said - maybe pop off to your other forum.

You are pure entertainment OP, your responses are gold! But maybe go give someone a hug, you clearly need one!

No that wasnt my intention at all. I certainly don't want attention.

And i definitely don't want the attention that i have received on his thread. I have received a lot of abuse. It hasn't been enjoyable

I came on to have a minor moan about a minor thing as a lot of people do. I wasnt thinking about it that seriously.

I always get a receipt so I can prove I bought items if challenged.
