Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

I think because it saves paper if you don't want one. I can't stand the " can I have your email address" I say no now.

KrisAkabusi · 30/07/2025 13:55

So as to stop paper waste. Most receipts can't be recycled. So if you don't need a receipt don't ask for one and it won't be printed.

It can't be that much paper waste. If loads of other countries give a receipt every time.

It is only the UK that I have experienced this in.

I much prefer it to being automatically given it. Plenty of times I've taken my purchase and put the receipt straight back on the counter with a quick "no thank you". Sometimes they call out to offer it after I turned and the cheery "no thank you" is with my back turned as I've already left.

So much better when they ask before printing it.

KrisAkabusi · 30/07/2025 13:59

It might not be much per receipt, but add up the millions that are printed every day and it becomes a lot.

I'm in Ireland, we do this too. And maybe the other countries you've been to should be doing it.

SixteenClovesOfGarlic · 30/07/2025 14:01

My answer is always no, so I prefer to be asked, instead of having to bin it myself.

I don't thnk it happens in ireland

Because i visited my friend in Ireland recently.

I went into a tesco in Ireland, I bought items at the till, I was handed a receipt automatically

If i Go into tesco in england, i am asked if i want a receipt .

On that trip in Ireland, I also went into a Centra (small supermarket) and i was handed a receipt with the purchase.

I also went into a clothes store in Ireland and i was handed the receipt with the purchase. They didnt ask me if i wanted it.

It's a new thing here tbh, so it could also be happening where you used to live.

I don't take one now, unless it's something im likely to return because I have "a receipt" on my bank account.

It might not change the world on it's own, but receipts must total a significant amount of wasted paper and energy.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 30/07/2025 14:05

Yabu to be so incensed by it 😂

Your example about walking all the way back to the cashier sounds melodramatic

Sahara123 · 30/07/2025 14:08

I rarely need a receipt so I usually pre empt the question by saying I don’t need a receipt thank you as I leave. I just throw them in the bin anyway. Such a waste of paper

There is a cost to everything so yes it is down to cost of paper and paper waste.

Some people do different things in different countries. It's crazy to get your head round i know

It is annoying when I am halfway out the door and i get called back, because they forgot to ask me if I wanted a receipt when I was at the till.

This has happened to me three times this week

I’ve been asked a lot in France too if I want a receipt, it’s not just here

You are either shopping in some spectacularly inefficient shops, or you move at the speed of light to get that far before they remember or you are exaggerating.

Ignore tjem. If it's just about the receipt and you don't want it just pretend you've not heard and walk off. If it's something g else like you've left your purse on the counter they will come after you or keep it safe till you remember.

If it's that you actually want a receipt then ask for one. If you aren't remembering either it isn't important.

bostonchamps · 30/07/2025 14:16

I don't think I've ever, ever been 'called back' to check if I want a receipt. I've certainly been asked as I'm just leaving the till, and I just say no as I'm walking away? Otherwise they just assume I don't want one.

Right i haven't lived in France. But I have lived in two other European countries, where they just gave me the receipt.

So it is making me irritated every time.

This is a lighthearted moan as a joke,

but sometimes when they call me back to ask me, i feel like shouting "no i dont want the fucking receipt just let me leave The fucking shop!!"

One of the small shops near my job is terrible for doing this.

Its like he has been trained recently to ask do customers want a receipt , but he never remembers , then just as you are going out the door, he shouts it at you

I get why you’re annoyed but equally you’re being unreasonable. I only ask for a receipt if I’ve bought something that needs a guarantee. I’ve been refusing them for years, so much paper waste!

how many times have you screwed up the receipt you’ve been given and chucked it in the bin. Or left it languishing in a pocket. So much landfill.

purplecorkheart · 30/07/2025 14:21

I am in Ireland and find that I am normally asked if I want a receipt, normally when the payment is going through.

When I worked in a small business I was told to always ask if people wanted a receipt rather than just give it. This is because the owner got complaints from the litter warden that people were dropping receipt on the ground outside the business. It did not go down well when the owner pointed out that maybe it would be better to reinstall the litter box that had been removed.

Thats very unusual, I probably go in 10 shops a week and have never had that experience. Are you sure you aren't running away after paying?

No and thats a nasty accusation to accuse someone of. You are accusing me of stealing.

I have never run away without paying in my life

Well it’s new here as well tbh, within the last few years not sure exactly. It did use to be given as standard. I hate it because I don’t fancy being stopped and not having a receipt to prove I’ve paid.

God listen to yourself. Someone who lives in another country is telling you it happens there as well and you're saying "nope it can't possibly I went to a grand total of three shops in that country this one time and it didn't happen in those."
Embarrassed for you.
You could always hurry up the transaction by saying "I don't want a receipt" while the card payment is going through if it bothers you that much.

No, it definitely hasn't 😂 No one in their right mind behaves like that.

Allows you to walk a decent distance away.
Calls you to come back.
Sits and stares at you silently when you trudge back to the till.
Then says 'do you want a receipt?' when you're right back in front of them.

Pull the other one op. Melodrama for effect has to at least be slightly believable 😂
