Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

Haha thats so funny.

I feel like i need a bingo card to mark off the cliche mumsnet bully phrases.

ive seen the phrase you used there, written in exactly the same way to the OP on so many different threads.

"Its you who is to blame OP!"

Again. So predictable

Bingo to you then eh x

familylawyer01392 · 30/07/2025 15:11

Bullies? What are you talking about?

I find it ridiculous that someone would be so het up about being asked if they would like a receipt that they make an online post about it.

I am allowed to find things amusing.

You are the one who is labelling me in a negative manner...

Why do you think I am het up? You are the one taking it seriously

People come on to mumsnet to have a minor moan, usually about something quite lighthearted.

I don't think that most of us would put our deepest problems on mumsnet.

If it's a cup of tea/coffee, then I generally don't get a rceipt, and I don't think it is ever offered.
However, if it's a jumper that I may return, of groceries that I may be stopped for to check purchase, then I always take the receipt, as proof of purchase.

I think its funny how you seem to think that you are the only possible people that could have ever lived in Ireland.

Why is that then? People come and go from Ireland all the time. You should know that.

Did you miss the part where I wrote that I lived in Ireland all of last year ? And I lived in Ireland at the start of this year. I left Ireland in February of this year . I am visiting Ireland this weekend. I am flying there on Saturday.

So the fact that you have never been asked for a receipt in Ireland means that no one else has ever been asked if they want a receipt ? It just simple does not happen and I and other posters are lying.
got it.

CloudywMeatballs · 30/07/2025 15:16

I'm in the US. I often get asked whether or not I want a receipt. Usually I don't. I'm happy to make this (tiny) contribution to minimizing waste.

Brooklyn70 · 30/07/2025 15:16

i’m on holiday in france at the moment and they’ve asked me if i want a receipt in every single shop i’ve been.

Paper waste is debatable. Are you saying to print any paper is waste? And that everything should be online? You could then argue that all books should be online? as any printed book is paper waste. And there are hundreds of thousands of books out there. But people like printed paper books.

What a ridiculous response. Avoiding unnecessary paper waste is obviously a good thing. That doesn't mean that ALL paper is unnecessary or avoidable. We should all do our bit to help the environment.

Isobel201 · 30/07/2025 15:20

it was mentioned on another thread recently that they didn't get a receipt in Tescos and the security guard decided to pursue them.
However, when I go supermarket shopping, I never get the receipt because its mostly items that I've chosen to purchase for eating/drinking and I'll never return them anyway, and the self checkouts always ask if you want one or not. They still give them to me the odd time I use a manned checkout. Security guards have never pursued me. I always think its good to save the paper, like someone else said, it can't be recycled, so what's the point if you don't need to return something.

KrisAkabusi · 30/07/2025 15:20

There is HUGE paper waste in schools. I see hundreds of printed photocopies been thrown in the bin every week.

Why is paper waste not okay in shops, but it is okay in UK schools then, in your opinion?

But all this wate paper in schools can, and should be. Nobody is saying that it's OK to waste it and bin it.
Till receipts are mostly printed on thermal paper which can't be recycled. So saying no to receipts does save paper waste. Its not our fault you can't see the difference.

"Ridiculous" is the buzzword of mumsnet.

So do you buy all your books online? You don't buy paper books?

There is no need for paper books, magazines or newspapers, sp one could argue that all of them are wasting paper

It can't be that much paper waste. If loads of other countries give a receipt every time.

It is only the UK that I have experienced this in.

Ink

PandoraSocks · 30/07/2025 15:26

They do the same in Wales. Not sure what the issue is.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/07/2025 15:28

It's possible that the UK is ahead of other countries with regard to reducing this kind of paper waste. It certainly used to be the case that receipts were given automatically but most places are more aware now of the need to reduce the unnecessary use of resources.

Clearly, the UK isn't alone in making progress on this issue, as posters in France and Ireland report similar shifts in those countries. Of course, it's possible that there will be shops/individual staff members in all countries who haven't yet caught up.

I do understand that you like getting the receipt automatically, OP, but given how many of them just end up straight in the bin, I don't really think saying "yes please" is a big price to pay to reduce waste. Or are you one of those people who doesn't give a shit about the environment?

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 15:28

Mumsnet really needs to do something about the cesspit of bullying and nastiness that is on here
. It's disgusting. Its out of hand

I posted about a very serious life issue on mumsnet once and i was ridiculed and i was told that i was wallowing in misery.

I post about a minor issue on this thread, and again I am riduculed, and there is nasty post after nasty post, aftet nasty post.

I have seen the O.Ps on so many other threads on here, be trashed, abused and ridiculed.

And this is supposed to be an advice forum.

You don't see this on any other forum, only on mumsnet .

Yes, virtually no paper waste. Just the 11.2 billion receipts in the UK each year amounting to 28 tonnes of non-recyclable waste. Hardly worth bothering to reduce the waste really 🙄

Obviously.

Receipts are not causing more paperwaste than all of the printed books out there.

I haven't seen any bullying on this thread, OP, but you can report any posts where you think people have crossed the line.

What I have seen is you digging your heels in and insisting that you're not wrong about this practice only happening in the UK, even when there are people who live in other countries telling you that it happens where they live as well.

Posters will challenge you robustly on MN when they think you're wrong, but I've also seen people getting an incredible amount of support when it's warranted. Other sites are available if you find that people's honest responses are a bit much.

You havent seen any bullying, because it is not directed at you.

Would you like me to go back and count the insults aimed at me and compile them into a little list for you?

What proportion of paper receipts end up straight in the bin? And what proportion of books are put straight in the bin?

Nobody is stopping you from having a receipt if you actually need one. It's about not giving them to people who don't want them. Why is that an issue for you?

Just to add to other posters' confirmation of the practise in Ireland @Bunnybenty I live in Ireland, born here, raised here, lived many decades here!

I can confirm like other Irish posters - you are almost always asked if you want your receipt. In some shops, e.g. when buying clothes, you can opt for a paper or email receipt (with shops very much pushing the email option). You mention having shopped in Tesco here - I know when I'm doing my weekly grocery shop, I'm usually given a receipt without asking - that makes sense, as it's a considerable amount of money, paid by card, and in the supermarket I use, vouchers are included as rewards, and noted at the end.

Likewise if I was making some big household purchase, I would want my receipt and probably be given it without being asked - I mean, who won't want a receipt in case of error / exchange?

However, for most daily quick interactions, small purchases, it is common practise and has been for a long time, to ask if you want a receipt.

Regarding bullying, it's your tone and nature of your posts that are sounding somewhat bullying, rather than any posters replying to you.

So don't make up a total fucking lie
