Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

This does happen in Ireland: i literally just got off the plane back from Ireland and they absolutely did ask me in every shop I went into if I wanted a receipt.
Also, I live in France and it has recently become the law that they only give you a receipt if you ask for one, though in practice they generally ask you if you want one or not.

They didnt ask me did i want a receipt when i was in ireland.

So we have had different experiences.

I actually have a friend who works in tesco in ireland.

I just asked her there, do they give the receipt or do they ask. as i get asked in england.

She said that they just give the receipt without asking.

So you have a sample of 2-3 EU countries and present is as "everywhere". Lol.

In some EU countries the local law makes handing out the receipt mandatory. In some countries you are actually legally obliged to have it with you between paying and leaving the shop premises. It's their way to fight tax evasion by the shop.

In my EU country it is not mandatory. Habitually, shops which are selling generally returnable stuff are printing it automatically unless you declare you have a customer account. Shops selling perishable things like groceries and fast food when you order at the self-service kiosk ask whether you want your receipt.

ConsultMe · 30/07/2025 14:57

It depends on how much you spend surely or what you buy. If you buy something expensive or something likely to need proof of purchase in case of issues in the future - you’ll just be given the receipt. For example if you bought tech.

If you just bought a meal deal at Tesco - I can imagine you might be asked if you need the receipt.

Lol you are so immature. Maybe ask before asusming, you know like an adult would so.

No I have lived in way more countries than 2-3 EU countries. I used them as an example.

Have you ever lived in another country?

I don't thnk it happens in ireland

Because i visited my friend in Ireland recently.

I went into a tesco in Ireland, I bought items at the till, I was handed a receipt automatically

If i Go into tesco in england, i am asked if i want a receipt .

On that trip in Ireland, I also went into a Centra (small supermarket) and i was handed a receipt with the purchase.

I also went into a clothes store in Ireland and i was handed the receipt with the purchase. They didnt ask me if i wanted it.

You do indeed get asked in Ireland and this has been common practice for years.
The teller will usually ask as the transaction is processing and should you decline then you can be one your way and not wait for the receipt to print.
At self checkout you also can decline a printed receipt.

Less waste and quicker transaction.

It is annoying when I am halfway out the door and i get called back, because they forgot to ask me if I wanted a receipt when I was at the till.

This has happened to me three times this week

Edited

Come on, this doesn't happen all the time. It's never happened to me once in my life, never mind three times this week. Most places don't even bother asking now, the default is no receipt unless it's requested (which IMO is as it should be).

Emilysmum90 · 30/07/2025 15:03

I don't know what's more batty, the fact OP has started a whole thread about shop staff occasionally asking a very innocent question, or how overly furious she is getting with some of the posters replying 😂

Do you think we are making this up ?

So utterly predictable.

You can nearly time the bullies on here to the minute.

And you can predict everything that hey will say.

The first one comes on and blames the OP.
The second one comes on and tells the OP that this is the most ridiculous thread they have ever seen.
The Third one will come on and tell the OP that she has mental health issues.

It follows the same path every single time.

Bullies are not original. They stick to the same insults.

In Italy years ago my MIL stressed I must always get a receipt as if you go out of a shop and are requested to prove you paid and you don't have a receipt it is a massive problem. So I have always got receipts even here in UK, also if I buy something in one shop and go to a different one that sells same product how would I prove I haven't just put it in my bag?

angelco · 30/07/2025 15:07

Is this all you’ve got to worry about? What a non issue this Is

Lolz at you calling me stupid! 🤣

It is not ok anywhere! It's not a race to the bottom. Are you suggesting that because schools are terrible that everyone else should also be terrible? As opposed to retail being good and everyone else should aim to be good?

I think its funny how you seem to think that you are the only possible people that could have ever lived in Ireland.

Why is that then? People come and go from Ireland all the time. You should know that.

Did you miss the part where I wrote that I lived in Ireland all of last year ? And I lived in Ireland at the start of this year. I left Ireland in February of this year . I am visiting Ireland this weekend. I am flying there on Saturday.

I agree OP - it drives me mad. If I’m using a card to pay for my purchases, of course I want a receipt. I get enough spam so I’m not willing to hand out my email address to people in shops so that I get even more. If I have a problem with an item, or want to return something then I want a receipt to make this easier. I’ve had several occasions over the years where a transaction has been processed incorrectly and it’s very much easier to dispute this with the bank of you’ve got a receipt. I think the very worst offenders are petrol stations and I always have to ask for a receipt.

I do think there must be an element of your behaviour to blame here OP if this is happening so frequently, can’t say it’s a common issue in my life

Bullies? What are you talking about?

I find it ridiculous that someone would be so het up about being asked if they would like a receipt that they make an online post about it.

I am allowed to find things amusing.

You are the one who is labelling me in a negative manner...

I wouldn't say it really goes without saying that people want a receipt if they pay for something on card, lots of people use their card for the majority of day-to-day purchases and are happy without a receipt.

Agreed re email receipts though!

Haha thats so funny.

I feel like i need a bingo card to mark off the cliche mumsnet bully phrases.

ive seen the phrase you used there, written in exactly the same way to the OP on so many different threads.

"Its you who is to blame OP!"

Again. So predictable

I usually have to ask for a receipt in small shops like a Spar or a petrol station shop. I’m in Ireland.
In a chain like M&S they just put it into the bag with the item.
I then take the receipt out and put it in my bag.
My friend had a brand new purchase stolen, she had paid cash, the receipt was in the bag with the item and the thief brought the item back and got the cash refund. 😡
