To ask how people get their clothes smelling so nice???

Haemagoblin · 30/07/2025 08:45

I just got a dress through that I bought on eBay and it smells so good! Like the smell that comes out of a laundrette as you walk past.

I was my clothes using various washing powders and dry them on the line outside where possible. They smell clean but neutral - not this really strong 'just washed' smell!

What is the secret, proper grown ups??

We get our clothes smelling nice by soaking them in vinegar and putting them in the sun to remove the scents that they come in with from the store. Then we wash several times with fragrance free detergent. At that point they are typically safe to add to the closet and wear.

Yes me too. I have pretty well given up buying clothes on ebay. Even the brand new stuff smells scented. I wonder if some of the unwanted odour is actually in the bag, or if the seller squirts them with fabreze or similar?
It is such a personal thing.

Surf deep sea makes my clothes smell like expensive mens aftershave. Subtle but sexy and luxurious.

notmoredirtywashing · 30/07/2025 17:44

I use a scoop of washing soda with detergent, then vinegar as a softener. I get told how nice my washing smells!

Laundry obsession runs through my family and I'm as badly afflicted as the rest of them. If I don't have a constant supply of at least 4 different detergents and conditioners on the go, I get the wobbles.

My absolute favourite is the Rituals fabric conditioner, but it's ridiculously expensive, so it's saved for 'best' only (ie. guest room bedding). I've also had some great results by mixing together the dregs of near-empty bottles of different conditioners and essentially creating my own signature fragrances.

I find that tumble drying until the washing is almost dry and then air drying to finish it off yields the best scent intensity.

This fabric conditioner from M&S always prompts comments from people about how 'lovely your clothes smell'. I love the scent, but it is quite strong, so it might not be for everyone:

Oh, I love this subject - I could talk about it all day 😂

Zoflora in final rinse

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/07/2025 18:34

@Tuningfork thanks for that it’s difficult to find a non animal fat one

Disturbia81 · 30/07/2025 18:46

Fabric softener but more importantly the unstoppables. I love strong smelling washing.
Drying outside for me without anything else just smells of wind.

I think they just know that most people prefer scented so they go with that, to avoid feedback about any other smells.

melmel1 · 30/07/2025 19:17

This is one area of grown up life that really has an impact on me.... if the washing smells of wet crusty flannels 😂 just cant bear it
So I have found Cleaning the inside of the drum with zoflora wipe it all around and in the rubber bits. Clean the draw out . Run an empty cycle with bleach after.
I recently found my washing was not smelling good and it was the underside of the draw.
I use a bit of zoflora in each washing. Laundry detergent in the drum fabric softener. Don't overload your clothes horse dry as quick as possible.

Megapint · 30/07/2025 19:19

Oh come on now op, you should know it's criminal round these parts to have nice smelling laundry!. There'll be swathes of poster's passing out and vomiting at the very thought.
(I use fairy softener smells bloody lovely)

Jennps · 30/07/2025 19:22

KimberleyClark · 30/07/2025 08:48

Why do you need your clothes to smell anything but clean? I don’t use fabric softener, my skin doesn’t like it - and my clothes always small fresh and clean.

Why does anyone want anything?

What a strange way to respond to someone’s perfectly reasonable question.

MN is very strange place.

yeesh · 30/07/2025 19:28

I think drying outside takes away the washing powder smell

🤣👏🏼
I love the fairy one too

LemonBeagle · 30/07/2025 19:45

You need the liquid not the powder.

I also wondered the same OP then stumbled on the Fairy non bio platinum liquid.

Definitely holds the freshly washed smell more.

Squishymallows · 30/07/2025 19:47

A newish or regularly cleaned washing machine.

bio powder, warm washes with hot washes where possible. Don’t use fabric conditioner and our stuff smells amazing. (Lots of persil bio)

TowerRavenSeven · 30/07/2025 19:47

It’s those strong scent beads you put in your laundry and give me a migraine!

SparklyEmeraldShoes · 30/07/2025 19:53

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 30/07/2025 09:44

Make sure that when you put your washing in the washing machine that you can push it down to about half way up the drum. If it's more full than that the water and detergent does not get through/around all the clothes.

I also use fabric softener and I use the Spanish brand Asevi and I find it a really nice smell, quite a few scents avaialble. I also use their floor cleaners and bathroom cleaners - it's been a game changer for me, think you can get it in most home bargains

Yes! I love the Asevi Marseille Soap version. Quite a different (better) scent than any of the UK ones.

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 30/07/2025 19:54

Fabric conditioner is a major cause of indoor pollution. Add in wax melt and air fresheners and it must be such an unhealthy environment. Also not sure why people want to walk around in a cloud of fabric conditioner...it smells so awful.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 30/07/2025 20:01

Comtesse · 30/07/2025 09:09

The worst thing about buying things on ebay/ Vinted is the nasty fabric conditioner that people use - it’s overpowering, needs to be washed several times to get rid of it sometimes ughhhh. YABU to want clothes to smell of anything at all in my view - just clean is fine (I know no one asked but hey it is AIBU so….)

Absolutely agree! I have to wash almost everything I buy from Vinted 5 times to get rid of the horrid smell which negates the sustainability of buying secondhand imho. You can smell it before you even open the parcels!

This new scent stuff is the bane of my life now (buying baby clothes so going through a lot of size changes).

Ditto - this is incredible, thank you!

Fairy makes my clothes smell so nice and I dry washing outside as well, as much as weather permits anyway

surreygirl1987 · 30/07/2025 20:46

Coulddowithanap · 30/07/2025 09:01

I wondered if it's because you become nose blind to your usual washing powder/liquid etc. and those who use a different scent/brand probably think the same.. could be wrong though. Out washing always smells clean but do notice the difference when buying online.

This!! I always think that other people's clothes smell amazing. Then a few weeks ago I got a random message from someone on Vinted asking me what on earth I'd washed the clothes with as they smelled fantastic! I was in disbelief that she had the right person at first!

Laura95167 · 30/07/2025 22:02

Smaller loads in the washing machine make a difference

KeepcalmandtellthemtoFoff · 30/07/2025 22:04

I think shameless you need more detergent than you think, softener helps although I don't use it anymore and some people use fabric scent sprays like febreeze or the lenor spray in items they're selling.
