To ask how people get their clothes smelling so nice???

I just got a dress through that I bought on eBay and it smells so good! Like the smell that comes out of a laundrette as you walk past.

I was my clothes using various washing powders and dry them on the line outside where possible. They smell clean but neutral - not this really strong 'just washed' smell!

What is the secret, proper grown ups??

Drying clothes outside wherever possible and using this:

The worst thing about buying things on ebay/ Vinted is the nasty fabric conditioner that people use - it’s overpowering, needs to be washed several times to get rid of it sometimes ughhhh. YABU to want clothes to smell of anything at all in my view - just clean is fine (I know no one asked but hey it is AIBU so….)

Highlighta · 30/07/2025 09:11

For me:

Non bio powder
Line dry
Monthly clean of washing machine, including the filter
Keep the door of the machine open when not in use.

If you keep your washing machine door closed, it has that musty smell before you have been put the clothes in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/07/2025 09:12

Oh that’s so interesting because I loathe smell of fabric softeners/ conditioners that people use - they smell so artificial to me.

I like my clothes to smell clean not scented.

It’s my one bugbear with buying things from Vinted etc - that they come stinking of this artificially stuff.

I use ecover washing liquid and if I want a fabric softener, I use the ecover one too. The only one I’ve found that doesn’t stink!

Fentyfan · 30/07/2025 09:12

Yes having a clean washing machine and running the tub clean (high temp wash) all matter.

Wilton is great.

i keep trying to wean myself off my boosters addiction but it smells so nice…

spoonbillstretford · 30/07/2025 09:12

Changing washing powder probably as you don't notice the smell of your own after a while.

Though other people probably notice yours.

I like the smell of Fairy and stick with that, plus dry on the line as much as possible.

spoonbillstretford · 30/07/2025 09:14

I tried the boosters momentarily (knowing they were daft really) but DD1 started getting asthma again and I could only narrow it down to that. Stopped using them and her symptoms subsided.

Yes exactly. Some of the scents of fabric softeners literally make me feel nauseous. I loathe them.

Ugh me too, I use a tiny bit of an unscented one, I hate strong fake smells. I remember staying somewhere where the bedding was so strong I couldn’t sleep. Line drying for me .

Imbusytodaysorry · 30/07/2025 09:17

@Haemagoblin i put a small splash of fairy softener . I’ve learned less is more .
I use to always use fairy or period non bio.
These days it’s daz
iI usually have nice smelling laundry .

I do find when doing a 60 wash the clothes come out less nice smelling though .

Also make sure you machine is clean

Surprisedcupcake · 30/07/2025 09:19

I use really heavily scented detergent powders and fabric conditioners and also use probably more of both than the recommended amount. My husband tells me I have a problem 😂

ForLimeBiscuit · 30/07/2025 09:24

Its the machine, I clean and descale my machine properly filter, seals and everything every 2 weeks and washing smells like this. I don’t use scent boosters and don’t always use fabric conditioner but only use branded washing liquid mainly pwrsil or fairy.

. Its why washing always smells amazing with a new machine.

SupposesRoses · 30/07/2025 09:25

I had an ex who used four times the recommended amount of softener. It smelled great though.
But I think you are just blind to the smell of your clothes. Change brands and you may smell it for a couple of days.

scorpiogirly · 30/07/2025 09:25

I find the Persil 3 in 1 tabs in the green bow produce a nice scent. Other than that i just use powder from anywhere really and a nice fabric softener. I lile the Aldi ones too. Another little tip is to get a spray bottle and dilute a little bit of fabric softener and spray on clothes before ironing or just let it dry if you dont iron.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 30/07/2025 09:44

Make sure that when you put your washing in the washing machine that you can push it down to about half way up the drum. If it's more full than that the water and detergent does not get through/around all the clothes.

I also use fabric softener and I use the Spanish brand Asevi and I find it a really nice smell, quite a few scents avaialble. I also use their floor cleaners and bathroom cleaners - it's been a game changer for me, think you can get it in most home bargains

Ok, that’s fine, but @Haemagoblinlikes it, doesn’t she??

This isn’t about you.

TerrierCollector · 30/07/2025 11:18

@theressomanytinafeysicouldbe I've started using the rosehip Asevi washing liquid and conditioner, and my clothes have never smelled better. I also line dry as much as I can, and if I am ironing (not often) put a little bit of rosewater in the iron.

Cattery · 30/07/2025 11:22

Clean washing machine. Nice washing pods. Nice fabric softener.

KnickerlessParsons · 30/07/2025 11:22

KimberleyClark · 30/07/2025 08:48

Why do you need your clothes to smell anything but clean? I don’t use fabric softener, my skin doesn’t like it - and my clothes always small fresh and clean.

Everything has to “smell nice” these days. Candles, reed diffusers, plug in thingies, body lotions, shampoos, sanitary pads, washing powder/capsules, dishwasher tabs…
Its ridiculous.

KStockHERO · 30/07/2025 11:26

I put bars of soap in my drawers nestled between items, and in the pockets of items hung up in the wardrobe. It makes my clothes smell divine and the smell really lingers.

I find it works best with 'old fashioned' soap like Palmolive, Pears, Lux or the white Imperial Leather bars.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/07/2025 11:30

Ariel Cold wash gel - discovered this in lockdown when it was all dh could buy. Upgraded from Aldi ever since, magic stuff and gets everything out plus smell nice.

I use the blue Lenor too as our water is rock hard.

cofffeeee · 30/07/2025 11:51

My clothes smell lovely.
I never overload my machine i only use pods that i get from temu.
No fabric conditioner.
And tumble dry iron and put away.

Luluco · 30/07/2025 11:54

I’ve started using Persil Wonder Wash and the washing smells lovely and the scent stays.

MiddleAgedDread · 30/07/2025 11:59

I think you become "blind" to the smell of your own laundry powder if you use the same stuff all the time. I've noticed that if I can't get my usual product and buy something else then it always smells fresh and freshly laundered but when I go back to the old stuff it has the same effect.

GentleSheep · 30/07/2025 12:15

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 30/07/2025 11:14

Ok, that’s fine, but @Haemagoblinlikes it, doesn’t she??

This isn’t about you.

It is if she passes by! My MIL uses a fabric softener (don't know which one) that smells so strongly that when my DP visits her I can smell it on him when he returns. So it does affect other people.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/07/2025 12:23

I wash my sheets and towels at 90C once a month, with fabric whitener, and they smell wonderful.
