To ask how people get their clothes smelling so nice???

Haemagoblin · 30/07/2025 08:45

I just got a dress through that I bought on eBay and it smells so good! Like the smell that comes out of a laundrette as you walk past.

I was my clothes using various washing powders and dry them on the line outside where possible. They smell clean but neutral - not this really strong 'just washed' smell!

What is the secret, proper grown ups??

It is if she passes by! My MIL uses a fabric softener (don't know which one) that smells so strongly that when my DP visits her I can smell it on him when he returns. So it does affect other people.

I’m not going to stop washing my clothes in what I use or wearing deodorant or perfume because I might walk past someone who doesn’t like it
I don’t like the smell of body odour or smelly feet but people seem happy enough to walk around with that

Ariel Cold wash gel - discovered this in lockdown when it was all dh could buy. Upgraded from Aldi ever since, magic stuff and gets everything out plus smell nice.

I use the blue Lenor too as our water is rock hard.

I love the smell of this stuff.

I think its actually pretty crap for cleaning clothes but it does smell wonderful.

Everything has to “smell nice” these days. Candles, reed diffusers, plug in thingies, body lotions, shampoos, sanitary pads, washing powder/capsules, dishwasher tabs…
Its ridiculous.

Why is it ridiculous to want things to smell nice?

WordsFailMeYetAgain · 30/07/2025 15:11

Sometimes you need to switch fragrances/brands to be able to smell them, we get nose blind!

My MIL always says my washing smells divine but I can't smell it. Too long using the same detergent and conditioner.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 30/07/2025 16:38

I buy lots of stuff on Vinted and they always smell like a charity shop 😬
Straight in the wash: Fairy through and through usually (pods and softener) but I'm easily seduced in Home Bargains 😂

I use the same fabric conditioner and wash, followed by tumble dry and iron with the same scented iron water (diluted as it corrodes otherwise). Smells lovely!

Ponderingwindow · 30/07/2025 16:50

We get our clothes smelling nice by soaking them in vinegar and putting them in the sun to remove the scents that they come in with from the store. Then we wash several times with fragrance free detergent. At that point they are typically safe to add to the closet and wear.

zoflora in the drawer. Game-changing.

How do you do this @ConfusingRelationship ?
Just sprinkle on drawer liners or scraps of fabric, or something more refined?

beezlebubnicky · 30/07/2025 16:52

It's worth bearing in mind that using too much fabric softener can mess with your washing machine.

Scent boosters and overuse of chemical softeners aren't good for your health either - like most strongly scented cleaning products they release volatile organic compounds or VOCs. They can accumulate in your body, affect the air quality in your home, and have adverse health impacts, especially on people who have asthma or other respiratory conditions.

I'm not saying don't use it, but having a clean washing machine (always leave the door and drawer open) and using a small amount of fabric conditioner should leave your clothes smelling pleasant.

My Holy Grail would be to find a fragrance that smells exactly like (nice) shop-bought clothes - that neutral, cottony smell, if you know what I mean. I've never been able to replicate it, and normal fresheners are too floral.

Washing and drying them.

Did you read the OP and think she’s not washing her clothes? Fascinating.

Coffeeishot · 30/07/2025 16:56

The spainish detergents are really popular aren't they I saw another poster mentioning it, maybe it is one of those ?

Screamingabdabz · 30/07/2025 16:57

Ugh it makes me gag when I buy something off Vinted and they’ve drenched it in fabric conditioner. It’s really vile and makes my heart sink because it takes several washes to get rid.

I think people have forgotten what clean actually is, and it doesn’t ‘smell’ of anything. At most it’ll smell of the fresh air if you line dry.

Those perfumed products mean your clothes aren’t clean at all because you’ve just doused them in nasty unnecessary chemical gunk.

If you want to smell nice, use Chanel.

amicisimma · 30/07/2025 16:57

Hot enough wash.
Thorough rinse, preferably with a touch of vinegar, or unperfumed conditioner.
Thorough drying, preferably outside.
Avoid those ghastly synthetic perfumes in conditioner & 'scent boosters'. Boak.

I used to get a nice surf or maybe it was bold I've not seen it in years it was called Fresh cotton and it was lovely.

@ConfusingRelationship means the washing machine drawer, rather than drawers where you store clothes.

A capful of Zoflora in the drawer segment where the fabric condition goes works wonders.

WingSlutz · 30/07/2025 16:58

I read somewhere that if your clothes smell of fabric softener it means that your machine hasn’t rinsed them properly! Not sure if this is true (plus I’m too stingy to use fabric softener). But I do love the smell of clean laundry, maybe I’m nose blind to my own?

IShouldNotCoco · 30/07/2025 16:59

I use scent boosters and fabric conditioner - can’t stand clothes that don’t smell fresh the whole time you use them.

Hmnnnnnnn · 30/07/2025 16:59

What do people use to clean washing machine?

It’s better than when it arrives smelling of mould (which happened to me once!)

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/07/2025 17:02

On MN fabric softener/scent boosters are regarded as toxic as Anthrax

Lavenderandclimbingrose · 30/07/2025 17:02

ItsBouqeeeet · 30/07/2025 08:53

Is your washing machine drawer clean? I cleaned mine recently with white vinegar and it's made a noticeable difference.

Clean the machine first. Air dry when possible. I have lavender (dried) in wardrobes and lavender oil (tiny amount) in spray bottles and tiny squirt 😂when ironing.

Coffeeishot · 30/07/2025 17:02

Oh that's horrific !

Tekknonan · 30/07/2025 17:07

Usually some horrible chemical that shouldn't really be going into the water.
