Why’s my sofa in your lounge?

We are in the process of moving house and are currently in a rental whilst we wait for the new house to be ready (expecting it to be about 6 months)
We have a fairly new 3 piece suite but only room for the chairs in the rental place, so ILs offered to store the sofa until the new house is ready. They have a big house and said it could go in a downstairs bedroom that never gets used. DH took it over in a van and took into the room it was supposed to stay in.
Anyway, we’ve come to stay with them today for a couple of days, went to see SIL this evening and there’s our sofa in her living room with a toddler and a dog sat on it! No covers or anything and just sat there like it’s supposed to be there.
DH didn’t know it was there either until we saw it but he wasn’t saying anything, so it was left for me to question why it was there… nobody could give a good reason why it’s at SILs house and were looking at me like I was mad for asking. DH then said we wanted it back in the spare room at ILs house rather than being used in SILs heavy footfall house and potentially getting damaged.
We did say if there was a problem storing it at ILs as per the agreed plan, it wasn’t a problem and we could arrange a storage unit instead. ILs just looked surprised/confused and said it was fine to move it back to theirs “if that’s what you want” in a bewildered sort of way. Apparently SIL scoffed like we were idiots for even bringing it up and said “FFS, what do you think it’s going to happen to your precious sofa?!” although that was when I was out of the room and DH only told me later that she said that.
AITA here? I pretty much know I’m not, but ILs and SILs reaction suggest they think there’s nothing wrong with moving it - but the audacity! And why the secrecy? Apparently they didn’t tell us because it wasn’t a big deal. But like I say, there’s also seemingly no good reason for it to have been moved, they’ve not even attempted to give a reason/excuse, just the offer to move it back to ILs “if that’s what you want.”

I still find all the sofa moving strange given they're not the easiest things to transport, unbelievable really.

Exactly! If the sofa wasn’t needed (which it wasn’t), then why go to all the effort?

Before we left I was trying to get through to PIL why it wasn’t acceptable and used the analogy of imagine a family member asked if they could park their car on your drive/property for a long period of time whilst they were getting their drive redone for example… then you start driving the car around without the permission or knowledge of the owners… MIL told me not to be so stupid, but FIL said “fair point” but couldn’t possibly admit that what they or SIL had done was CF-ery.

You’re the one who sounds childish and yes an animal 'hater’.Your comment is so crude, unnecessary.
Clearly you hate dogs, that’s a you problem.
Well cared for dogs are not 'minging’.
I completely understand, people who don’t want a dog on their sofa.Just no need to get so aggressive about it.

Sorry, but completely disagree. I have a dog who i absolutely adore but he will only go on the sofa once I put a blanket down. He smells after a walk and it lingers. They do not sound like dog haters!

Good analogy, OP, and not even them driving it, the SiL, who has 2 cars already!! Lovely shiny new car straight from the dealer. Didn’t ask, didn’t need. Dropping their sausage roll crumbs all over it, greasy fingers on the steering wheel, gearstick and stereo buttons...

AND have the audacity to call YOU stupid for this analogy?! 🤯😂

Completely not taking any responsibility for being COMPLETELY of order. And SiL? What does she say?! CF’s the lot of them! With some gaslighting to boot!!

I’d be having minimal contact with them from now on. They’ve shown you who they are….

SiL should absolutely pay for a Valet!! But good luck getting that out of her!

Twelftytwo · 02/08/2025 14:30

@BdayQ so how did they transport the sofa?

@BdayQ so how did they transport the sofa?

It’s not particularly clear, but it seems like SIL’s friend/neighbour transported it in their van.

Tell us you’re an animal hater and know nothing about animals without telling us…… 🙄

• Not all dogs are dirty (especially when well looked after)
• Many, many dog breeds do not shed fur at all
• Many, many dog breeds are hypoallergenic and can be around those who are allergic without any reaction at all
• Most sofa covers can be washed…..

And all dogs have arseholes that they shit out of. I don't want one of those in contact with my soft furnishings, thanks.

That’s your opinion, if it’s ok with you l’ll have mine.
The people you’re referring to, are saying, all dogs smell and are 'minging’, another poster saying all dogs have stinking arse holes, is there any need of that!
It’s pointless me elaborating, the comments l’ve received have just shown the type of person they are, by saying l’m unhinged, blah blah, just because they disagree.A difference of opinion doesn’t make me unhinged.
I have said l agree with op, completely understand, it’s not ok to let your dog go on someone else’s sofa
There’s just no need though to get nasty on here, about all dogs.People who make comments like that are not animal lovers.

OSTMusTisNT · 02/08/2025 16:00

Time to hire a storage unit and send them the bill for a professional upholstery cleaner.

Dogs shitty anal areas and soggy knobs should not be on sofas. 🤮🤢.

SpaceRaccoon · 02/08/2025 16:15

what a disgusting comment!

I mean it's not wrong. Dogs don't wear pants, and unless they've something like a collie with a neat tucked tail, you're getting doggy bumhole on your soft furnishings.

I think this is one of those situations where people see the same thing completely differently.

My SIL often asks to try on a ring I have. It’s my mum’s very dear to me, huge sentimental value. Nothing is going to happen to it if she tries it on. But I don’t like taking it off, I don’t want it on her finger. To her, it’s a random piece of jewelry. To me, it’s part of my mum.

To your PILs and SIL, it’s just a sofa. Literally meant for sitting on. To you, it’s your home furniture. Where you feel cosy and safe and it’s yours.

This two things are different, though.

The sofa could be damaged. The dog could slobber or piss on it.

You're just being mean.

It's not really an "opinion" to say that dogs smell..

They do. It's reasonable to not want the sofa coming back smelling of a stinky dog.

Justchilling07 · 02/08/2025 15:54

what a disgusting comment!

But it's just true?

Or do your dogs wear pants?

Justchilling07 · 02/08/2025 17:09

@MasterBethAgain, l’ve already said l agree with op and also it’s just bizarre to me, that a family member would, take someone’s sofa without the owner of sofa knowing and have their dog and child on it.What l’m disagreeing with, is the unnecessary comments some people have posted, all dogs stink etc, if you’d care for dogs you’d know that just isn’t true.
Bathing them regularly and protecting your furniture is all that’s needed. If your dog stinks, it’s through neglect.
@diterictur l’ve got 1 dog, miniature Jack Russel, who’s 19 years old.She doesn’t wear pants, because she’s a dog.

MasterBeth · 02/08/2025 17:11

Dogs smell. Your dogs smell. Dogs use smell to communicate. It’s not an insult to say dogs smell. They are supposed to smell.

Have you got a dog? Have you got any experience of caring for dogs?
They aren’t supposed to stink, which is what other posters have said and what l’m referring to.
If a dog stinks it’s down to neglecting the dog.
Accountability is on the person not the dog.

Some people dislike the natural doggy smell of even a well-cared-for dog. To them, dogs might stink. It's really not something to get this worked up about. No dogs are reading these posts or otherwise taking offence over any insinuation about their doggy aroma Grin

Justchilling07 · 02/08/2025 17:59

@SchnizelVonKrumm I’m referring to really unnecessary disgusting comments, l’m answering, comments that l’ve received, if that’s ok with you Thanks for explaining to me, no dogs are reading these comments and therefore l shouldn’t be getting this worked upGrin
l will also give my opinion from actual experience, rather from ignorance.
